Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Jewish French officer was falsely accused of treason in 1895.

Answer: Dreyfus

Despite Dreyfus's protestations of innocence, he was found guilty of treason in a secret military court-martial, during which he was denied the right to examine the evidence against him. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil's Island, a penal colony located off the coast of South America.
Novelist Émile Zola published his denunciation of the army cover-up in a daily newspaper, thus helping to clear Dreyfus's name.
In September 1899, the president of France pardoned Dreyfus, but it wasn't until 1906 that he was finally exonerated of the charges, after which he was restored to his former military rank.
2. This popular spud side dish is often served with gravy.

Answer: mashed potatoes

Canadian, Edward A. Asselbergs invented instant mashed potatoes (dehydrated potato flakes) in 1962.
3. This actress played Merna in the 1995 movie "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar".

Answer: Melinda Dillon

Will there ever be another film where we can see Patrick Swayze AND Wesley Snipes dressed in drag?
4. Complete the title of this Sherlock Holmes story, "The Adventure of the ___ Foot".

Answer: Devils

Written by the famous Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Did you know that Conan Doyle wasn't knighted for his work on Sherlock Holmes? He was knighted to service to his country for his work on a nonfiction "pamphlet" regarding the Boer War.
5. What was the first name of Dale's husband and Trigger's owner?

Answer: Roy

Dale married Roy Rogers in 1947, after the death of his first wife. He proposed to her on horseback. Their famous horses, Trigger and Buttermilk, are now mounted for display at The Roy Rogers and Dale Evens Museum in Victorville, California, along with their saddles, and their dog Bullet.
6. Sigourney Weaver starred in this highly popular 1979 Sci-Fi/Horror film:

Answer: Alien

Swiss surrealist artist, sculptor and filmmaker H.R. (Hans Ruedi) Giger is known to audiences worldwide for the 'biomechanoid' designs featured prominently in this film, and many others including 'Alien 3' (1992), 'Species' (1995) and 'Alien Resurrection' (1997). His dark and otherworldly visions have been compared to Salvador Dali and Alexandro Jodorowsky, with whom Giger collaborated on an unfilmed version of Frank Herbert's masterpiece 'Dune' (1976).
7. The ____ of London is currently the repository of the Crown Jewels.

Answer: Tower

Founded nearly a millennium ago and expanded upon over the centuries since, the Tower of London has protected, housed and imprisoned many.
During it's long history, it has been the seat of British government and the living quarters of monarchs. It has housed lions, bears, and (to this day) flightless ravens ... not to mention notorious traitors and framed members of court, lords and ministers, clergymen and knights.
8. Whole, half, quarter, eighth, flat and sharp are all types of what?

Answer: Musical Notes

Well, I hope no one picked pancakes :-)
9. Who directed the 1971 film "Duel"?

Answer: Steven Spielberg

Though made for TV, this movie impressed me so much at the time I saw it, I looked up the director. Some guy named Steven Spielberg...and I thought, "hmmm, never heard of him". Funny looking back on that now.
10. So now that you have all the clues, what is the common bond?

Answer: Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Here are how each answer relates to the final common bond: 1) and 5) Richard Dryfuss starred in the movie as the obsessed Roy Neary 2) And of course the famous scene where he builds the Devils Tower out of mashed potatoes at dinner. 3) Melinda Dillon played Jillian Guiler, whose son has been abducted. 4) and 7) The Devils Tower is the mysterious object of our main character's obsession, though neither understand why 6) Of course, the movie is ultimately about aliens. 8) The alien ship makes contact using musical notes and colored lights. 9) And of course, Steven Spielberg directed this great film.
