Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is NOT another name for BLUE?

Answer: chartreuse

Chartreuse is yellow or green and is named after a liqueur. Azure is a clear sky blue and may be slightly purplish. Cerulean is just about the same as Azure. Finally, cyan is a greenish blue. Along with magenta and yellow, cyan is one of the primary colours of pigment.
2. Which of the following have nothing to do with RED?

Answer: verdigris

Verdigris is another name for Copper(II) acetate, which is green. It forms on copper when in contact with air, as can be seen on the Statue of Liberty, for example. Fuchsia is a purplish-red and a type of flowering plant. Cochineal is a crimson/carmine dye that comes from an insect. Alizarin is also a dye, except that it is made from a plant.

It has been used for thousands of years, even being found in the tombs of ancient Egyptian Pharaohs!
3. Which of these does NOT go together with WHITE?

Answer: colour

It's true! White is technically not a colour. An object that appears white reflects every colour that is in the visual spectrum. Adding white to a colour, making it lighter, is a tint. Gypsophila is a flowering plant of which there are many varieties but the most common one is known as "baby's breath" which, along with most kinds, has small white flowers.
4. What here is NOT GREEN?

Answer: alpine salamander

The Alpine Salamander is a black creature that lives in the Alps. White's Tree Frog is also called the Australian Green Tree Frog and although it has some white on it, it has a lot of green too. Winter Purslane, also called Miner's Lettuce, is a edible plant that grows on the West Cost of North and Central America.

It too is green. And of course Kermit the Frog is the very lovable Muppet who told us that being green isn't easy!
5. Which of the following could NOT be considered PURPLE?

Answer: gamboge

Yes, there is such a thing as a purple carrot! The only non-purple thing here is Gamboge, which is a yellow pigment that comes from a tree. An amethyst is a purple stone. Heliotrope is a light purple plant with purple flowers.

You may have heard that purple is associated with royalty. This is because in ancient times the only source of purple dye was from a sea creature which was difficult and expensive to get. Only the people who were really rich, usually royalty, could afford it.
6. Which of these edible items is NOT YELLOW?

Answer: guacamole

They may all be delicious but guacamole is the only food here that is not yellow, since its made from green avocados!
7. Which one is NOT ORANGE?

Answer: Oran

Oran is the name of a city in Algeria as well as several other places around the world. The kumquat and kinnow are both citrus fruits from Asia that look like oranges.
8. Which naturally occurring substance is NOT BLACK?

Answer: benitoite

These are all types of stones except for ebony, which is a type of wood. Benitoite, unlike magnetite and obsidian, is blue and not black. Onyx, another type of stone, actually comes in a variety of colours even though it commonly refers to black.
9. If you were painting with a shade of BROWN, what colour would you definitely NOT be using?

Answer: azure

While sepia, taupe and ochre are all shades of brown, azure is a shade of blue.
10. Which of these is NOT a COOL COLOUR?

Answer: orange

Orange is a warm color along with yellow and red. Purple, blue and green are all cool. Whether mixed colours are cool or warm depends on whether they are composed more of a cool colour or more of a warm colour. For example, a "cool green" contains more blue and a "warm green" contains more yellow.
