Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Washington, D.C.

Answer: District of Columbia

The "D.C" in Washington, D.C. stands for the "District of Columbia", which is a reference to the female national representation of the United States. The location of the American capital city was determined by George Washington, himself through the Residence Act (An Act for establishing the temporary and permanent seat of the Government of the United States), which he signed on July 16th, 1790. Land for the region was 'donated' from parts of Maryland and Virginia.
2. DC Entertainment, Inc.

Answer: Detective Comics

National Allied Publications was founded in 1934 by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, beginning with their first published comic entitled "New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine #1".

It was in March of 1937 that the title "Detective Comics #1" was first published. It was from this title that DC Entertainment, Inc. derived its name. The original series ran from 1937 until 2011, then was cancelled in favour of a new series (with the same title). This lasted for five years before reverting to the original series in 2016 (continuing on from the last issue number in 2011).

While today DC Comics have a vast multitude of characters, the "Detective Comics" serial was the comic book that introduced Batman to the world (in issue #27, published in May, 1939).
3. D.C. al fine

Answer: Da capo

The musical instruction 'D.C. al fine' is short for 'Da capo al fine', which translates from Italian to mean 'repeat from the beginning (literally 'the head') until reaching the end'.

The 'D.C.' instruction can also be combined with 'al coda' (repeat from the beginning until reaching the coda sign, then jumping to the coda ('tail') section at the end of the piece.
4. DC Shoes, Inc.

Answer: Droors Clothing

DC Shoes, Inc. was founded in 1994 and was originally part of the 'Droors Clothing' brand, which was skate-related apparel. With the increasing popularity of DC Shoes, however, the Droors Clothing part of the company was shelved to focus on the DC Shoes business. Eventually, DC Shoes was purchased (in 2004) by Quiksilver, and has since been developed independently of its origins.

Droors Clothing, now completely separated from its former brainchild, returned to the market in 2018 in its own right with a new clothing line.
5. DC Talk

Answer: Decent Christian

DC Talk is a Christian group that performs in rap and rock styles. It was formed by Toby McKeehan, Michael Tait, and Kevin Max Smith in 1987 with their first album "DC Talk" released in 1989. The group achieved a high level of popularity in Christian music circles, and in the secular music world to a degree, as well.

In the year 2000, the group decided to take a hiatus to pursue individual solo careers, but they came back together for a reunion tour (a few shows, anyway) in 2017.
6. DC "Dangerous" Davies

Answer: Detective Constable

Detective Constable "Dangerous" Davies is the main character of a series of novels by Welsh author Leslie Thomas, beginning with his first appearance in 1976's "Dangerous Davies: The Last Detective".

That particular novel was adapted into a 1981 film (with the same title) starring Bernard Cribbins as Davies. Just over 20 years later, Peter Davison took over the role for a BBC television series (with the title "The Last Detective") that aired between 2003 and 2007.
7. DC Recordings

Answer: Depth Charge

DC Recordings was established by the DJ and recording artist J (Jonathan) Saul Kane in the mid 1990s to produce his own music. He used the initials of his stage name 'Depth Charge' as the name for the label.

Depth Charge's first single produced through DC Recordings was 1995's "Legend of the Golden Snake EP", which reached Number 75 on the UK Singles Chart. His first full album released through DC Recordings was 1999's "Lust".
8. AC/DC

Answer: Direct current

AC/DC are an Australian rock group that have been going since 1973. Their first album "High Voltage" was released in 1975, and their 18th came out in 2020. While there have been a lot of changes to the band's membership over the years, lead guitarist Angus Young (who initially formed the band with his brother Malcolm) has remained constant through the years.

According to Wikipedia, here is how the Young brothers came up with the name 'AC/DC':

"Malcolm and Angus Young developed the idea for the band's name after their sister, Margaret Young, saw the initials "AC/DC" on a sewing machine. "AC/DC" is an abbreviation meaning "alternating current/direct current" electricity. The brothers felt that this name symbolised the band's raw energy, power-driven performances of their music."

The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
9. Bogotá, D.C.

Answer: Distrito Capital

Bogotá is the capital city of Colombia, and the D.C. following its name is simply a reference to this fact. In translation, 'Distrito Capital' means 'Capital District'.

Bogotá was founded in 1538 by Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada as the capital of the New Kingdom of Granada. Over the centuries since that day, Bogotá has remained the capital even when the name of the country changed around it. It has been the capital of the Republic of Colombia since 1886.
10. dC

Answer: Decicoulomb

A decicoulomb is equal to one tenth the electrical charge of a coulomb, or 0.1C.

Named for French engineer and physicist Charles-Augustin de Coulomb, the SI unit coulomb is defined as being equal to the quantity of electricity conveyed in one second by a current of one ampere (Oxford Dictionary). In technical terms, one coulomb equals exactly 1/(1.602176634×10−19) elementary charges.
