1. Name the second African-American to play MLB (Major League Baseball).

Answer: Larry Doby

Larry Doby(1923-2003) was an American professional baseball player and the second African-American to play in MLB. He was however the first to play in the American League, on July 5, 1947 for the Cleveland Indians. He finished his career in 1957 with 253 home runs.

Satchel Paige (1906-1982) was the first African-American to pitch in a World Series in 1948 in which his team, with teammate Larry Doby, won the World Series against the Boston Braves. Jackie Robinson (1919-1972) was the first African-American to play MLB when he debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. Jackie finished his career in 1956 with 137 home runs and his number 42 jersey has been retired by all MLB teams. April 15 each year is declared "Jackie Robinson Day" and all players in MLB wear number 42.

Fritz Pollard (1894-1984) was one of the first African-Americans, together with Bobby Marshall, to play in what is now known as the NFL (National Football League). He was, however, the first African-American to be a head coach in the NFL.
2. Which of these was second in a US Presidential election race, by less than 1,000 votes?

Answer: Al Gore (2000)

All of the above Presidential candidates won the popular vote, together with Samuel Tilden (1876), but all lost the election. Al Gore was the 45th US Vice President, from 1993-2001, but was narrowly beaten due to a Florida recount which was settled by the US Supreme Court which ruled 5-4 in favour of George W. Bush. Al Gore went on to become an active environmentalist and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

Hilary Clinton at least made it to the White House as First Lady from 1993-2001. Andrew Jackson went on to become US President as did Grover Cleveland. Cleveland lost the 1888 election but this was sandwiched between two terms as President (22nd(1885-89) and 24th (1893-1897)).

Besides his 18 golfing major victories, Jack Nicklaus was a runner-up on 19 occasions.

Arnold Palmer with seven major victories also had ten runner-up spots. Sam Snead won seven majors and was runner-up on eight occasions. Greg Norman won only two majors and was runner-up eight times and four of them were by a play-off.

Viktor Lisitsky (USSR) was a Soviet gymnast who won five silver medals during the 1964 and 1968 Olympics. He also won two silver medals in the World Championships. However, he did strike gold seven times in the European Championships plus another five silver.

Frankie Fredericks (Namibia) was a track and field athlete who won four Olympic silver medals in the 100m and 200m at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. He did win a gold and three silver medals at the World Championships. Raelene Boyle (AUS) won three silver medals in the 100m and 200m over the two Olympic Games in 1968 and 1972. Shirley Babashoff (USA) was a swimmer who won six silver medals and three gold over the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. She also won seven silver medals and two gold in the World Championships.

Answer: E. M. Forster

E. M. Forster (1879-1970) was an English novelist whose works included "Where Angels Fear to Tread" (1905), "A Room with a View" (1908) and "A Passage to India" (1924), all of which were adapted into movies. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 16 different years.

Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was a Russian writer who write "War and Peace" (1869) and "Anna Karenina" (1877). He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902-1906 without being successful. In the years 1901, 1902 and 1910 he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize again, without success. Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) was an Indian activities who was nominated five times during 1937-1948 for the Nobel Peace Prize but was never awarded the honour. Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) was a French playwright and novelist. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1964, but refused the honour.

He was 39 years of age when he lost the 1974 Wimbledon title to Jimmy Connors (USA). He won his first Australian Open in 1953 and his last in 1972. Fred Stolle (Australia) won two Grand Slam singles titles (French and US Open) but never Wimbledon. He was runner-up at Wimbledon in three consecutive years being 1963-64-65 and Australian Open runner-up 1964 and 1965. Bill Tilden (USA) (1893-1953) won ten Grand Slam singles titles and was runner-up on five other occasions. Ivan Lendl (CZE) won eight Grand Slam singles titles and was runner-up on another 11 occasions.

Herman Van Springel is a former Belgian professional road cyclist who was beaten into second place by 38 seconds in the 1968 Tour de France by Jan Janssen of the Netherlands. He did win the classic road race the Bordeaux-Paris on seven occasions from 1970-1981.
