Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sometimes a garden is far from perfect. What colour do the Queen's guards paint the roses in the film version of "Alice in Wonderland" (1951)?

Answer: Red

Hinting at the artificiality of the Queen's government, Alice enters the garden to discover that the guards, all in the form of playing cards, are painting rose bushes from white to red, a colour characteristic of her suit (hearts). Coincidentally, in Lewis Carroll's children's novel, the gardeners are in the suit of 'spades'.

In both the film and Carroll's second story, "Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There", Alice also visits gardens of talking flowers. The Disney version shows the garden of talking flowers singing "All in the Golden Afternoon".
2. What nonsensical Beatles song contains the lyric: "sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun"?

Answer: I Am the Walrus

Quite the ubiquitous song, "I Am the Walrus" was based on the 'Walrus and the Carpenter' story seen in the works of Lewis Carroll. Originally appearing on the band's 1967 "Magical Mystery Tour" album, it was also packaged as a b-side with the upbeat song "Hello, Goodbye". "Magical Mystery Tour", as an album, has gained perfect reviews from many media outlets and has sold over millions of copies worldwide.
3. What is the name of the 2005 film set in Kenya which won a then-pregnant Rachel Weisz her first Oscar?

Answer: The Constant Gardener

"The Constant Gardener", directed by Fernando Meirelles (known for "City of God" and "Blindness"), was nominated for four Academy Awards at the 2006 ceremonies. Set in Kenya, the movie follows an activist and a diplomat who discovers that his wife has been killed.

As the movie unfolds, more mysteries put the protagonist, played by Ralph Fiennes, between himself and the truth. The gardening aspect of the film comes from Fiennes' character whose hobby involves cultivating gardens. Weisz won her first Oscar (in the 'Best Supporting Actress' field) and the Golden Globe in the same year.

The film was nominated for ten BAFTA Awards.
4. What pop duo from the late 1990s released the song "I Want You" and "Truly, Madly, Deeply" from their first album?

Answer: Savage Garden

Savage Garden consisted of Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones and they recorded their first CD in 1997. Their self-titled debut album went Platinum or higher in thirty different countries, going Diamond or higher in Australia and Canada. The first single, "I Want You", peaked at #4 in the U.S. while "Truly, Madly, Deeply" hit #1 on three Billboard charts.

Their second album (of only two) was released in 1999. This album, known as "Affirmation", wasn't as popular at first but went thirteen times Platinum. Both Hayes and Jones went on with their musical careers in separate directions after splitting.
5. In Frances Hodgson Burnett's "The Secret Garden", a young girl named Mary discovers a garden to cultivate at the home of her uncle. Where is the majority of the novel set?

Answer: England

Originally a serialized children's story written in 1910, "The Secret Garden" follows a young girl whose parents have been killed by a cholera outbreak in India. Placed into the care of her British uncle, she is displaced from her home and needs to adapt to her new surroundings. Finding her comfort, discovering the secrets of her new manor home, and changing her attitude completely, Mary locates a hidden garden amongst the paths and yards of the sprawling property.

Here, she and her cousin learn to grow and flourish, both in terms of their garden and in their maturity.
6. "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" was released on film in 1997. Did Clint Eastwood direct the movie?

Answer: Yes

Originally a best-seller appearing on the "New York Times" listing for four years, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" was written by John Berendt as his debut novel. In 1997, Clint Eastwood directed and produced the film adaptation. Both are about the death of a Southern man and the trials which follow his death. All of the events within are based on real events occurring in the 1980s.

The film starred Kevin Spacey, John Cusack, and Jude Law. Screenwriter John Lee Hancock later went on to direct the 2009 film "The Blind Side".
7. Zach Braff wrote, directed, and starred in what 2004 film set in New Jersey?

Answer: Garden State

Also starring Natalie Portman and Peter Sarsgaard, "Garden State" followed Zach Braff's character as he returned to his New Jersey hometown to attend his mother's funeral. The film was originally released as part of the Sundance Film Festival in 2004.

After being picked up by Fox Searchlight, the film grossed $35,000,000 (with a budget of only $2,000,000) and won Zach Braff a Grammy Award for his soundtrack (containing Coldplay, The Shins, Frou Frou, and others). The title of the film, 'Garden State', is also the nickname of the state of New Jersey.
8. What is the name of the carnivorous plant found in the original film version of "Little Shop of Horrors"?

Answer: Audrey

Of all the man-eating plants, right? "The Little Shop of Horrors" was created in 1960 and as a result, a stage musical was created based on the original. Directed by Roger Corman (also known for "The Raven" and "House of Usher"), the movie featured Jack Nicholson in a supporting role and was paired with Italian horror director Mario Bava's "Black Sunday".

The sequel, directed by Frank Oz in 1986, starred Rick Moranis with Levi Stubbs of The Four Tops as the voice of Audrey II.
9. In Frank L. Baum's children's book, "The Wizard of Oz", Dorothy and her friends entered a field of poppies that put its denizens to sleep. Who saved them from almost certain disaster?

Answer: The Scarecrow and the Tin Man

Before Dorothy Gale, Toto, and her new friends (the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion) arrive at the Emerald City and the home of the great Wizard of Oz, they have to overcome a field of poppies down the path of the Yellow Brick Road. Soon, Dorothy, Toto, and the Lion find themselves falling into a deep sleep from which they can't be awakened. Due to some quick thinking the Scarecrow and the Tin Man, who aren't living creatures, are able to pull their friends from the field and save them before it's too late. Poppies, in and outside the book and film, are symbolic of death from their colour and their seeds.
10. What band's song "Black Hole Sun" had lead vocals from Chris Cornell?

Answer: Soundgarden
