Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Literature: Three of these characters were created by Stephen King, and the other by Agatha Christie. Which one is Christie's?

Answer: Edward Armstrong

Dr Edward Armstrong is one of the characters in Christie's "And Then There Were None", all brought to a lonely island to atone for some wrongdoing in their past. In Armstrong's case it was due to his having performed an operation while drunk, with predictable results. As the "guests" are killed off one by one, suspicion falls on Armstrong, at least for a time.

Ellis Redding is "Red" of "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption". Though I've had trouble confirming that his full name appears in the novella and not just the movie, I'm convinced that King's OK with it given published reports of his liking for the film. Eddie Kaspbrak is one of the members of The Losers' Club in "It". Ellie Creed is the young daughter of Louis and Rachel Creed, and sister of little Gage, in "Pet Sematary".
2. Movies: Which of these E actors portrayed Santa Claus in the Christmas movie "Elf" (2003)?

Answer: Edward Asner

Edward (Ed) Asner is known to television fans as Lou Grant on "Mary Tyler Moore" (1970-77) and its spinoff "Lou Grant" (1977-82), but his long career also includes a number of movie credits, including playing the Santa who inadvertently brought the orphan Buddy home in his toy sack one Christmas. Buddy (Will Ferrell) is raised by Papa Elf (Bob Newhart), but eventually is given permission by Santa to go to New York to find his human father (James Caan).

Edmund Gwenn played the loveable Kris Kringle, who believed he was Santa, in "Miracle on 34th Street" (1947). I can find no evidence that either Edgar Buchanan or Eli Wallach has portrayed Santa, though Buchanan was the loveable Uncle Joe in several related TV series in the 1960s.
3. Music: Which of the following is a musical instrument?

Answer: Euphonium

The euphonium is a brass instrument that looks a bit like a small tuba, whilst also having a higher pitched sound than a tuba. Its name comes from Greek meaning "well sounding". Though most frequently found in concert bands, appearances of the euphonium in jazz and pop settings have been recorded.

An emporium is a store that sells a variety of items; a general store, if you will. The endometrium is the inner lining of the uterus. Einsteinium is an element on the periodic table, with the symbol Es and atomic number 99.
4. People: Queen Elizabeth II's third son, and fourth child, Edward, was third in line for the throne of the UK when he was born, but has slipped down the list considerably since then. Our question, however, regards his full given name, the initials of which spell which masculine forename?

Answer: Earl

His given names are Edward Antony Richard Louis (E.A.R.L.), something that is easy to remember once you learn what the initials spell! Born in 1964, Prince Edward was created the Earl of Wessex in 1999, just prior to his marriage to Sophie Rhys-Jones. They have two children. His slide down the line of succession occurred due to his brothers, Charles and Andrew, having children, some of whom have also had children and so on.

He has served in the Royal Marines (briefly), run his own television company, and since 2002, been a full-time working member of the royal family, making appearances and fulfilling engagements as required. He also does a lot of work for charity.
5. Religion: Which of these women is named in Luke, Chapter 1, as the mother of John the Baptist?

Answer: Elisabeth

Elisabeth (Elizabeth) was the wife of Zacharias (Zechariah) and the birth of their son was somewhat miraculous, considering that she was thought to be barren, and was over 60, and he was getting on in years too. Naming the baby John, instead of after his father, caused some consternation amongst their family and neighbours, but both parents insisted upon John, as they had been instructed to do by the angel Gabriel. Elisabeth is mentioned only in this chapter of the Bible.

Esther, a queen of Persia, has her own book of the Bible, in the Old Testament. Eve was Adam's mate, and the first woman, as described in Genesis. Eglah, a wife of King David, is mentioned in both II Samuel and I Chronicles.
6. Science: If I'm trying to learn everything there is to know about Musca domestica, Mantis religiosa and Gryllus texensis, what is my most probable field of study?

Answer: Entomology

The critters named, in order, are the house fly, the praying mantis and the field cricket, all insects which might be of interest to an entomologist. In broader terms, I might be a zoologist, as entomology is a branch of that discipline with a focus on insects such as those mentioned. In earlier times I might also have studied arachnids, though these now have their own "ology"; arachnology.

There might be some overspill in my studies with ecology, with reference to how various insects interact with and affect various ecosystems, and also with ethology, which is the study of animal behaviour. Either of these, however, is less likely to be my main field of study. Embryology is the least likely of the four, being the study of embryos and fetuses, and other prenatal concerns.
7. Sports: During the 2020 Formula 1 season, who became the first former F1 driver to have both participated in F1 and have a grandson participate in an F1 race?

Answer: Emerson Fittipaldi

After Romain Grosjean was injured in a rather nasty shunt near the beginning of the Bahrain Grand Prix, Brazilian-American Pietro Fittipaldi was called on to drive for Haas F1 Team the following weekend, also in Bahrain.
His grandfather, Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi, was F1 World Champion in 1972 and 1974, CART champion in 1989 and won the Indianapolis 500 in 1989 and 1993. Emerson's brother Wilson and nephew Christian have also driven in the F1 series.

Eddie Irvine, from Northern Ireland, drove in Formula 1 from 1993 to 2002, finishing second in the 1999 season to Mika Hakkinen. Eppie Wietzes was a Canadian driver who only participated in a couple of Canadian Grands Prix (1967 and 1973) but was well known in Canada for his success in various other racing disciplines. Frenchman Eric Bernard drove F1 from 1989 to 1994, scoring a total of 10 points during his career.
8. Television: For playing what character did Sandra Oh win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series, at the 2019 ceremony?

Answer: Eve Polastri

Sandra Oh won for playing the title character in "Killing Eve" for her work in the show's first season (2018). At the 2006 ceremony she took home the Supporting Actress award for her portrayal of Dr Cristina (not Eve) Yang in "Grey's Anatomy".

Ellen Morgan was the character played by Ellen DeGeneres in her sitcom, "Ellen", and Ellen Pompeo plays Dr Meredith (not Ellen) Grey in "Grey's Anatomy".
9. Video Games: In "Angry Birds Friends", as played on Facebook, the bomb dropped by Matilda, the white bird, resembles what?

Answer: Egg

Looking a bit egg-shaped herself, Matilda is meant to be a chicken. Not only does she do damage with the egg bombs she drops, she also shoots off upwards and forwards, taking out obstacles in her path. Judging just when to release the bomb to maximize the effect of this onward flight can be tricky.
10. World: Which of these ranks applies to a junior officer in the United States Navy, and also to a junior officer in the 19th century British army?

Answer: Ensign

The USN has used ensign for its most junior officers since early in the American Civil War. Even the US army used the term until 1815. In the British army, ensign was discontinued as the lowest commissioned rank in 1871. Both armies have since used second lieutenant for that grade level.

The other three options can be found as ranks in either the US Navy, the Royal Navy or various merchant navies. Electrician and engineer officer are self-explanatory. "E.R.A." stands for engine room artificer, and is the old name for what the Royal Navy now calls marine engineering artificers (M.E.A.). They were skilled mechanics, fitters, boilermakers and such, responsible for keeping the ship running.
