10. Her novel dedicated to Prince Regent George, this 19th-century heroine wasn't nearly so adept at her chosen hobby of matchmaking as she believed herself to be. Who was she?

Answer: Emma

"I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like," Jane Austen said of Miss Emma Woodhouse. After "helping" to form the successful union of her governess, Miss Taylor, and Mr. Weston, Emma embarks upon a string of wildly inaccurate attempts at matchmaking. Only after making a royal mess of things, does Emma realize her own feelings for Mr. Knightley, and the folly of interfering in others' matters of the heart! Although Ms. Austen fairly despised the ill-reputed Prince Regent, she was informed that His Royal Highness admired her work and gave "permission" for her to dedicate a novel to him. "Emma," published in 1815, was that novel.
