Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This animal may be gruff, but it was seen with the members of Slipknot in a music video for the single "Left Behind". What kind of animal was used by the band for the video?

Answer: Goat

In the music video for the 2001 single "Left Behind", goats are the animals that can be seen among the band while they are playing. Besides the goats and the band playing in a forest, the video is about a young boy who works in a meat market and is also bullied at home by having rocks thrown through his window by other kids and not of the goat sort. The single "Left Behind" reached number 24 on the UK charts and was from Slipknot's second album "Iowa".

Ingress had a very unfortunate run-in with an amorous goat. The animal took quite a liking to her and in the attempt to get away from it, she ended up being pushed around and colliding with a fence. She had to be airlifted by helicopter for medical attention. Her sister kindly came on the boards to let us know and we held a cyber-vigil for her until she came back on to tell us she was all right. And that's how her first deep abiding friendships were born. She called it her 'randy goat', and she managed to always make people laugh when she told her version of the story. She was called upon to share the story any time someone new joined the team. This generosity and humor is part of what we who knew her miss every day.

2. Pie plant is a plant with reddish leaf stalks that are most commonly used in pies. What is the more well-known name of the pie plant?

Answer: Rhubarb

Because of its widespread use in pies, rhubarb was called pie plant in the late 1800s in the United States. The edible part of the rhubarb is its stalks, also known as petioles. Its roots can be used as a brown dye in places where walnut husks are not readily available. Rhubarb leaves, however, contain high levels of oxalic acid that can be nephrotoxic. The stalks also contain oxalic acid but at a lower concentration that is safe for consumption.

Rhubarb pie was a favourite of Ingress's. She had a wonderful recipe handed down from one of her relatives, which she shared with us.

3. The piccolo is a versatile musical instrument and member of the woodwind family. This half-sized flute has been featured in concertos, sonatas, symphonies, chamber music, and operas. One of its best-known occurrences exists as a solo final repeat in the closing section of which enduring marching band song?

Answer: The Stars and Stripes Forever

Though the piccolo has a part in all these marches, John Phillips Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever" gives it prominence with a rousing solo. This patriotic tune is the National March of the United States of America and is usually played after a President gives a speech or public appearance. The solo ends as the low brass join in counter melody to finish the song.

"Anchors Aweigh" is a Naval Academy fight song written by Charles Zimmerman, a Navy Lieutenant and band master. "Entry of the Gladiators" was written by Czech composer Julius Fucík and was originally titled "Grande Marche Chromatique" but changed to reflect his interest in the Roman Empire. The "Invercargill March" was written by Alex Lithgow and named for his home town in New Zealand. It's a popular tune worldwide and especially favored by the U.S. Marines.

Ingress was an accomplished musician, and the piccolo was one of many instruments with which she excelled. She shared a link (unfortunately now unavailable) with us where she was featured playing this famous solo with her college marching band. She graduated and went on to become a music teacher to young children, a job she only had for a couple of years before she passed. She had shared with us how comforting the children were when she could no longer hide her illness. Music gave her great joy.

4. The entertainer and accordion player Lawrence Welk is one of the recipients of the Rough Rider award. After which US President was this award named?

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

In 1961, Lawrence Welk became the first recipient of the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award. The award is given by the state of North Dakota and is decided by the state's governor to honor those who have some ties to the state and have excelled in what they do. Lawrence hosted the "The Lawrence Welk Show" which had a run of 27 years on the US networks. He also released over 20 singles, and his first number one song "Calcutta" stayed at the top spot for two weeks in 1961. Lawrence Welk also worked on radio shows and live performances. Due to his long-lived career, he managed to get two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one for television and another for recording.

When Ingress was ready to sign out of Fun Trivia for the night, she would often say she could hear the lull of sweet accordion music playing. So I asked her once why the accordion and she replied "that she always found the music of Lawrence Welk very relaxing".

5. By what nickname is the unique American football field at Boise State University called?

Answer: Smurf Turf

Boise State's stadium is not the only stadium in the country to use a blue Astroturf field, but it was the first. In 1986, Boise State decided to replace the green turf on their field. Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier decided to install a blue turf to bring notoriety to the school. In the many years since, the blue turf has become synonymous with Boise's football program, although not popular with all Boise fans.

Ingress's preferred nickname for the stadium was "The Smurf Turf". Other nicknames include "The Blue" and "The Blue Plastic Tundra." Ingress attended many home games for her beloved Boise State Broncos and routinely asked us if we had seen her when Boise was on national television. Unfortunately, one of Boise's colors is orange so her hair was difficult to pick out.

6. Lutefisk is a Nordic traditional dish of preserved fish. What caustic solution is the fish soaked in to achieve its jelly-like consistency?

Answer: Lye

Dried or salted whitefish is soaked in cold water for several days before being soaked in lye. The lye causes a loss in protein content, resulting in the jelly-like consistency characteristic of lutefisk. The fish is soaked in cold water again for several days before it can be eaten.

Despite being of Scandinavian descent, Ingress did not enjoy the taste of lutefisk when she had the opportunity to try it.

7. Grabbing this violinist by the "horns" to "cheer" may not be such a good thing to do. Who is this violinist with a Norwegian heritage?

Answer: Ole Bull

Ole Bull was born in Bergen, Norway, in 1810. A violin virtuoso, he held concerts across Europe and North America. He is often referred to as Norway's first international superstar and is considered a national hero. All the other artists listed are more associated with playing the piano than any other instrument.

This question was hidden away in our message board for over four years. When Ingress posted a question about how to reword a question in the New Question Game, the question you see is how I would have done it. She liked the reworded question so much she told me to use it, which I wasn't going to do, as I considered it hers and still do. While re-reading some of the older topics on our message board, I came across this and thought that now is the time to use it.

8. Which Great Lakes Accent was a highlight in the 1996 award-winning film, "Fargo"?

Answer: Minnesotan

"Fargo" was a crime film revolving around a kidnap and the subsequent murders of the perpetrators. The movie won Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress in a Leading Role. It was filmed in several locations in Minnesota. In 2006, the film was included in the National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

The Great Lakes Accent or the Minnesota Accent is an accent more often used by the states that border Canada in the Upper Midwest of the US. It falls into the dialect of North-Central American English. Some of the states where this accent can be heard are North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, and some parts of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan.

"Fargo" was one of Ingress's favourite movies and her favourite word from the movie was the famous "Yah". "Yah, you betcha" is one of the most memorable lines from "Fargo".

During our team conference calls via "Skype", Ingress's Minnesota Accent paired with an infectious laugh was a combo not easily forgotten.

9. "Be With You", by Atomic Kitten, samples the hook from the single "Last Train to London" by which British band?

Answer: Electric Light Orchestra

"Be With You", released in 2002, became the third single released from Atomic Kitten's second album. It entered the Top Forty charts in every country in which it was released and consolidated the massive success of the band's previous record, a cover of Blondie's "The Tide is High".

"Last Train to London" was originally released by ELO in 1979 and was a track that paid a backhanded homage to the many years the group had spent commuting on trains between Birmingham and London.

I called Ingress my Electric Guitar Kitten. One of her recurring avatars was just that, a kitten playing a guitar. In a single heartbeat it captured her vitality, her off-beat sense of humour, and her tenderness.

10. Which 2011 dramatic film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt deals with the serious subject of cancer in a humorous manner? (The answer's a toss-up for sure.)

Answer: 50/50

"50/50" was written by Will Reiser and based on his own battle with cancer. Although the film is a drama, it has many lighthearted moments in it. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Adam, a 27-year-old who has been diagnosed with spinal cancer. He reads on the internet that the treatment for his type of cancer gives him a 50/50 chance to survive. Seth Rogen plays his best friend and main support throughout his ordeal.

I came to Phoenix Rising after it was a well established team. As such I did not get to know Ingress as well as most. Although this film came out after her passing, in many ways it embodied the person I knew, someone who did not let the seriousness of what she faced get in the way of the humor and fun that life offered. It is in this spirit I offer this question.
