Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hoop-rolling, a game using a stick to roll a hoop along, has been around for a while. When did it originate?

Answer: In ancient Greece, China and Africa (before 1000 AD)

Grecian vases from the 5th century BC depict people rolling hoops, and there are Roman texts from 2 BC that describe hoop-rolling (their term was "trochus") as a mentally and physically therapeutic activity. In China, there is evidence that the game may date as far back as 1000 BC!
2. Those Egyptians, they really knew how to throw a party! When things got going, they would place balls of fat on their heads! Why?

Answer: They contained perfumes whose scents emerged as the fat melted.

The fats were known as perfume cones. The Egyptians were known for making and wearing perfumed oils, but the fat cones (some were also thought to be made of wax) were unique party favors!
3. Theater is generally acknowledged to have originated with the ancient Greeks. The earliest productions featured a chorus singing hymns, called dithyrambs, to the Greek god of wine. Who was this fortunate deity?

Answer: Dionysus

Dionysus had the most fun job of all the Greek deities! He was the god of wine, madness, and theater. Bacchus was the Roman wine god, Osiris was Egyptian, and Sucellus was a Celtic god.
4. What items used in games have been found in various ancient and even prehistoric civilizations, and are still in wide use today?

Answer: Dice

Dice, made of bone, wood and in their earliest form, from the hooves of animals, have been documented to have existed as far back as 3,000 BC. They were unearthed at the archaeological site of the Burnt City in Iran; they are mentioned in the Bible in the Book of Psalms and in sacred Hindu texts; they have been found in Egyptian tombs, and in digs in China and Mexico. Playing cards originated much later, in China. Spinners do not appear in ancient games at all.
5. Probably most people taking this quiz have played the game, "Blind Man's Buff". What the heck is "buff", in this context?

Answer: It's a small push, like a bump in the right direction.

Blind Man's Buff, according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, was first known by that name in 1599. It has been so widely mispronounced as Blind Man's Bluff that today it's an acceptable alternate name for the game.
6. The name Mao Zedong, the first leader of the People's Republic of China, is not one that springs to mind when one thinks of fun! What popular game was outlawed when he assumed power in 1949?

Answer: Mahjong

Mahjong was viewed as a gambling activity, and all such activities were outlawed under the Communist regime. During the Cultural Revolution in 1985, Mahjong was once again declared to be legal, and play resumed!
7. An activity that at least some in the US found to be fun in the 1970s was "streaking". What was it?

Answer: Running naked through a public place

Streaking has been around for centuries, but in the 1970s there was a rash of streaking events that gained national attention in the United States. Streakers were almost commonplace at sporting events, and one man famously streaked across the stage at the 46th Academy Awards behind host David Niven in 1974. The fad died a natural death after about 1976, but it was fun while it lasted!
8. In August and September 2014, fun took some heavy hits with the passing of two of America's most beloved comedians. Who were they?

Answer: Robin Williams and Joan Rivers

Robin Williams committed suicide in August, and Joan Rivers died a week after experiencing cardiac and respiratory arrest during an endoscopy in September. Both deaths were unexpected, and both spurred an outpouring of sadness across the country. They each had unique approaches to humor, and there will probably never be anyone like them again!
9. What could be more fun than an amusement park AND chocolate factory? Where in the US can you find both within a stone's throw of one another?

Answer: Hershey, PA

You can tour the Hershey Chocolate Factory and play all day at Hershey Park in Hershey, PA. The other three places do exist, but without amusement parks or chocolate factories!
10. So, who did the song, "Fun, Fun, Fun"? And did Daddy take the T-bird away?

Answer: The Beach Boys and yep, he did...

And she (and the singer) had fun, fun, fun after Daddy took the T-bird away.
