Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For every loving couple there has to be a first meeting. Silvia Sommerlath met her future husband whilst working at the Munich Olympics of 1972. What was the result of this match?

Answer: She is now queen of Sweden

The German-born Sommerlath was involved with VIP hospitality at the Munich Olympics when she met Crown Prince Carl Gustaf. They were married in June 1976. A concert on the eve of their wedding saw the first ever public performance of the ABBA song, "Dancing Queen".

To be absolutely accurate, Queen Silvia is queen consort of Sweden.
2. For our two lovebirds, it starts in a nightclub when eyes meet across a crowded floor. They dance; they smooch; they kiss. In December 2009, Frenchman Richard Gasquet, who is no stranger to love games, successfully defended a failed drug test on the grounds of just such a kiss. In which sport is Monsieur Gasquet world-ranked?

Answer: Tennis

Gasquet was ranked at 32 when he failed a drug test in March 2009. His claim was that the traces of cocaine found in his urine had been passed whilst kissing a woman, known only as Pamela, at a Miami club.
3. It's time for an official first date. He's looking for something that will sweep her off her feet. Any of the following would certainly do that, but which of them celebrated their world championships (aka the X games) at Love Park, Philadelphia in 2001 and 2002?

Answer: Skateboarding

Love Park (aka JFK Plaza) derives its name from a sculpture by Robert Indiana, installed in 1976 to mark America's 200th anniversary of independence. Unfortunately, skateboarding in the park came to an end in 2002 after opposition from the local mayor.

The 2001 event saw Gabriel Ramos perform the first ever X games double back flip in winning the Inline Vert.
4. Instead, our boy opts for a seductive night in, where the lights are low and sweet music is playing. "Sweet Music" is the nickname of a baseball star that played for the Twins, Mets, Red Sox and Blue Jays, picking up a World Series MVP and Cy Young award along the way. What is his very appropriate name?

Answer: Frank Viola

Viola was a left-handed starting pitcher who was also selected for three All-Star games. His only appearance at a World Series came with the Minnesota Twins in 1987.
5. We're getting a spark. Their hearts are taking a stroll down love street. Prior to January 2009, which sport would you have been watching in Scotland if you saw Hearts playing at Love Street?

Answer: Soccer

Edinburgh-based Heart of Midlothian, affectionately known as Hearts and also as "The Jambos" or "Jam Tarts", are one of Scotland's leading teams. They take their name, indirectly, from a novel by Sir Walter Scott.

Love Street in Paisley was the home venue for another of Scotland's leading teams, St. Mirren. Their last game there was played on January 3rd 2009, after which they moved to a new ground at Greenhill Road.
6. Things are getting serious. They're now dreaming up pet names for each other. You'll have to wait to discover hers for him, but he's taken to using the name of a famous West Indies cricketer from the 1950s. Whose surname has he chosen to utter as he whispers his sweet nothings?

Answer: Alf Valentine

Valentine will always be regarded as a hero in the Caribbean for his heroics during the West Indies' 1950 tour of England. Together with fellow rookie bowler, Sonny Ramadhin, he inspired the team to both their first ever win in England and their first ever series win.
7. Love has become a major champion! Which sport has seen a "hole lotta Love", in the form of Davis Love III?

Answer: Golf

Love's first major win came in 1997 when he won the PGA tournament. He has also twice won the Players' Championship, unofficially known as the fifth major (1992 and 2003).
8. And now he's giving her his ring. A boxing ring is square, so why do people call it a ring?

Answer: It used to be a ring, before the days of formalised rules

In the infancy of modern boxing there were no rules and fights took place within either a ring of spectators or a circle chalked on the floor. The first attempt to establish a set of laws came in 1743. English boxer Jack Broughton who had, during his career, done much to popularise the sport, published rules to cover fights that he promoted. Although these speak of fights taking place on a stage, there are no stipulations concerning the fighting area. When he died, Broughton was sufficiently well-regarded to be buried in Westminster Abbey.

A square "ring" was first introduced as standard with the London Prize Ring rules of 1838. These were revised in 1853 and formed the foundation for the more well-known Marquess of Queensberry rules published in 1867.
9. You're hearing it from the horse's mouth. Our filly and stallion are approaching the finish at a gallop. It takes me back to 1969. In that year, the winner of the English Grand National was Highland Wedding and Rain Lover triumphed in the Melbourne Cup. If you know which horse won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, then you'll have discovered our girl's rather regal pet name for her stud. Which is what?

Answer: Majestic Prince

After winning the Preakness Stakes, Majestic Prince was contentiously entered in the Belmont Stakes, where he very narrowly failed to complete a Triple Crown hat-trick, finishing second. He was subsequently retired to stud. Another horse with a regal name, Prince Regent, won the 1969 Irish Derby Stakes.

Any resemblances to Silvia Sommerlath, in question one, are entirely coincidental.
10. After the wedding comes the patter of tiny feet - bambinos. George Herman Ruth, aka "The Bambino" aka "The Sultan of Swat", is best known as "Babe Ruth". How did he come by this nickname?

Answer: He started out as one of Jack Dunn's babes, Dunn being owner of the Baltimore Orioles

Dunn became manager of the minor league Orioles, who have no connection with the modern team of the same name, in 1907 and took over ownership in 1908. He gained a reputation for scouting and shrewd selections, with many of his "babes" going on to the majors.
