Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You know what I hate? Supercilious people. You know the ones that look at you funny. I HATE THAT! You can spot them by...

Answer: their eyebrows.

Supercilious comes from Latin for "eyebrow". Supercilious types look at others with raised eyebrows. I HATE THAT!
2. You know who else bugs me? The sort of person C.J. Dennis defined as "an ineffably pious person who mistakes this world for a penitentiary and himself for a warder". I HATE PEOPLE LIKE THAT! What do the Aussies call these creeps?

Answer: wowsers

In Australia a banana bender is someone from Queensland, a rellie is a relative, and a mozzie is a mosquito. I got bit by a mosquito the other day. I HATE THAT! Wowsers are much worse, though.
3. You know who really jerks my nose hair is Ms. Grundy. You know her? Bartleby defines her as "A person who is too much concerned with being proper, modest, or righteous". What comic book (THAT I HATE) has a character named Ms. Grundy?

Answer: Archie

Ms Grundy was the homeroom teacher, she also taught English and Mathematics on some occasions.
Right at the moment the only characters in Archie comics who don't annoy me are Betty and Veronica. Sometimes I'll be reading a comic and somebody has ripped one of the pages out. I HATE THAT!
4. Thomas Babington, Lord Macaulay may have been a bit of a fancy pants but he knew a thing or two about annoying people. Who was he talking about here? "_________ hated bear-baiting, not because it gave pain to the bear, but because it gave pleasure to the spectators." I HATE THAT THEY HATED THAT!

Answer: The Puritan

Puritans were called round heads because they killed off all the good hairdressers and couldn't get a decent haircut. The quote, by the way, was from "History of England". Puritan rule in England was brutish and boring, but apparently the English didn't mind too much because two hundred years later they invented Victorianism. I HATE THAT!
5. I can't stand busybodies, either, because they're always sticking their big noses in where they don't belong. I HATE THAT! Back in the old days they called gossips "quidnuncs". That's because "quid nunc" means...?

Answer: what now

The phrase "quid nunc" means "what now" in Latin. Which also means somebody who is very eager to learn and spread rumours and scandals. In other words a gossipmonger.
That's because busybodies always want to know other people's business. All together now... I HATE THAT!
6. Yeah, I hate busybodies so much I can't stop ranting about them. I HATE THAT. I need a new word for them though. OK, say I know somebody who likes to mess with other people's business. What would be the best word for this particular person?

Answer: officious

"Marked by excessive eagerness in offering unwanted services or advice to others." (American Heritage Dictionary.) Synonyms: interfering, intrusive, meddlesome, meddling, obtrusive. (Roget's Thesaurus.) The print in my reference books is really really small. I HATE THAT!
7. Here's a hypothetical situation for you: Say person A does something minor and persons B, C, and D decide to make a big deal out of it and make trouble for person A. Meanwhile, person E, F, and G have been getting away with exactly the same thing as person A, if not worse. Not a peep from B, C, and D. I HATE THAT! Anyway, what do you call them? No, that's not the question. Well, I don't know about you, but I call them hypocrites. You know who HATES hypocrites? God. That's right, God HATES them so much he makes them walk around in lead lined coffins for eternity, at least according to Dante. Where do hypocrites end up in "The Inferno"?

Answer: Level 8 - The Maleboge

Of course, HATING people causes one to end up with the wrathful, playing king of the hill in a burning lake for eternity. I can't help but wonder if spending too much time on the computer counts as gluttony, too. I better go give some money to beggars-- soon as I finish this quiz. Ugh... I HATE THAT!
8. Hey, here's some weird trivia: ever heard the word "bluenose"? Well, it means morally rigid, uptight... annoying, basically. I HATE THAT! The weird thing is that it originally meant people from a certain part of the world. Do you know where?

Answer: Nova Scotia, Canada

"Bluenose" was the name of a fishing and racing schooner that was built in 1921. It was very popular in the province and became an icon and symbol. The schooner was wrecked in 1946.
There seems to be no connection between the annoying sort of bluenose and the Canadian sort. Ambiguity... confusion... I HATE THAT!
9. There's an colorful American term that refers to dumb, annoying, restrictive, archaic regulations. I HATE THAT! What color laws are they?

Answer: blue laws

Blue laws or Sunday laws were enacted to restrict or completely ban commercial and entertainment activities on Sundays. This was because Sunday was originally set aside for religious purposes and the laws were there to enforce the sanctity of Sunday.
It is still practiced in various parts of the World.
A typical blue law is making it illegal to do business on a Sunday. Like I'll want to buy some beer Sunday morning while all the squares are at church and I can't. I HATE THAT!
10. OK, my rant's almost over, but I have one more question. Who was voted the most annoying person of 2002 on AmIAnnoying.com? This person sat on a turkey on "South Park", if that helps. That episode was really gross but... um... I liked it, really.

Answer: Martha Stewart

Martha Stewart was a retail businesswoman with expertise on the home management and hospitality sectors. She had her own TV shows, authored books and wrote in various newspapers. In 2005 she was convicted and served a 5-month prison sentence for insider information.
The best thing about "South Park" is that it often annoys the people I find the most annoying and it picks on their sort relentlessly. Hey, I don't know about you, but I feel a lot better now.
