Thematic Emotions Trivia Questions

1. "In The Mood" was a signature song of what bandleader of the 1930s and 40s?

From Quiz
Prepare to Meet Your Mood!

Answer: Glenn Miller

The melody of "In The Mood" was based on an older tune called "Tar Paper Stomp", composed by Wingy Monone who recorded it in 1930. Miller was not the first to record "In The Mood". It had previously been recorded by Edgar Hayes and His Orchestra as well as Artie Shaw. Glenn Miller bought the song in 1939. Although Miller is believed to have perished in a plane crash in 1944 an orchestra bearing his name has continued to perform.

2. ANIMALS: 'lovebirds' is a word for a happy couple, but there is an actual type of bird called the lovebird. In which continent would you find it?

From Quiz Love Is All Around

Answer: Africa

Lovebirds are actually a type of small parrot, usually green in colour, although several subspecies have pink/red or grey patches or markings on their heads and faces. They get their name because of the strong monogamous bond between male and female pairs, who often sit together for long periods. They are native to Africa, with some species being native to specific countries (such as Madagascar's grey-headed lovebird, or Ethiopia and Eritrea's black-winged lovebird). Colonies of feral peach-faced lovebirds also live in Phoenix, Arizona. Lovebirds can be kept as pets, but need plenty of socialisation and toys to keep them occupied, or it affects their mental health. Black-collared lovebirds have a very specific diet of native figs which can only be found in their home territory of Equatorial Africa.

3. Gavin MacLeod played the captain on the original version of "The Love Boat". What was his character's name?

From Quiz Labor of Love

Answer: Captain Stubing

Fresh off his stint as Murray Slaughter on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" Gavin MacLeod got a starring role as Captain Merrill Stubing on "The Love Boat". He became a born-again Christian in the mid-1980s and has appeared on several Christian television shows to discuss his life and conversion. From Quiz Going Postal

Answer: Florida

St. Petersburg is a city in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. The St. Petersburg Times were renamed to Tampa Bay Times on January 1, 2012. In his article he mentioned that "....in some circles excessive stress is known as 'going postal'...".

5. In Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", which species of creature escaped from the Earth shortly before its destruction, leaving only the message "So long, and thanks for all the fish"?

From Quiz The QMG Gives Thanks

Answer: Dolphins

This, according to Adams, only went to prove that dolphins were far more intelligent than humans thought. He subsequently used the phrase as the title of the fourth novel in the "Hitchhiker" series of books. Question by stedman, who is very thankful for the hours of pleasure Douglas Adams' works have given him over the years.

6. Hoop-rolling, a game using a stick to roll a hoop along, has been around for a while. When did it originate?

From Quiz Fun, Fun, Fun

Answer: In ancient Greece, China and Africa (before 1000 AD)

Grecian vases from the 5th century BC depict people rolling hoops, and there are Roman texts from 2 BC that describe hoop-rolling (their term was "trochus") as a mentally and physically therapeutic activity. In China, there is evidence that the game may date as far back as 1000 BC!

9. Burl Ives sang this happy song at Christmas: "Have a holly ______ Christmas It's the best time of the year." What word is missing?

From Quiz Laughing at Life

Answer: Jolly

10. The title for this quiz "Vanity of Vanities" comes from a quote in which book of the Bible?

From Quiz Vanity of Vanities

Answer: Ecclesiastes

"Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity" is found in Ecclesiastes 1:2. Some modern translations replace vanity with the word "meaningless". The older meaning of vanity referred to the transience of life, especially material possessions. In Milton's "Paradise Lost" there was a fair in a town called Vanity, which distracted people with all sorts of material possessions.

11. 'Don't Talk To Me (I'm Shy)' was the 'B' side to the single 'I'm In Love With A German Film Star' released in February 1981 by which British electro-pop band?

From Quiz The Seven Dwarfs: Bashful

Answer: The Passions

The new wave one-hit wonders The Passions were formed in 1978 in Shepherd's Bush, London and existed for just five years, splitting in 1983. Releasing a total of eight singles, they are best remembered for the 1981 hit single 'I'm in Love with a German Film Star' which reached its highest position at number 25 in the UK Singles Chart, was their only single release to make an impression in the charts and featured the song '(Don't Talk to Me) I'm Shy' on its 'B' side. For those much younger players who may be unfamiliar with vinyl records, this old medium had, in its 7" format, and in most cases, a single song recorded on each side! Question courtesy of Sister Seagull, not to be confused with those other Eighties new wave songsmiths, A Flock Of Seagulls.

12. I'd like to cheer you up with some rousing music, but I've picked up 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now'. Who brought us this happy little ditty in 1984?

From Quiz No Fun Here

'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' reached number ten on the UK Singles charts, although the band had only minor success in the USA. From Quiz "Revenge" Is In Style

Answer: A woman scorned

In "Fatal Attraction" Michael Douglas has a one night stand with Glenn Close. When he rejects her further advances she starts to stalk him and his family and becomes more and more obsessed with him. 14. The song "I Want to be Happy" comes from which 1925 musical by Vincent Youmans (music) and Irving Caesar and Otto Harbach (lyrics)? It contains the song "Tea for Two".

From Quiz The Seven Dwarfs: Happy

Answer: No, No, Nanette

Neither "I Want to be Happy" nor "Tea for Two" were in the pre-Broadway run of "No, No, Nanette", but were added for its Chicago run and became its most popular numbers. The musical had a very successful Broadway revival in 1971, with a substantially re-written book by Burt Shevelove. Question posed by stedman.

15. "Le Misanthrope" is a play that gives us one of the great classic portrayals of a grumpy old man. Which French playwright wrote it?

From Quiz The Seven Dwarfs: Grumpy

Answer: Molière

Alceste, the misanthrope of the title, tries in vain to fight against the prevailing hypocrisy of life in society and at court. Of course, he has to fall in love with Célimène, a flighty young woman who embodies all the vices that he hates. Eventually, having been convinced of the infidelity of his beloved, and having lost the considerable sum of 20,000 francs in a lawsuit in which he had justice entirely on his side, he resolves to flee from Parisian society and live in retirement in the distant provinces. However, as the curtain falls, his true friends Philinte and Éliante are determined to dissuade him, and somehow we feel that they will succeed: we grumpy old men can't really be happy with nothing to grumble about! Question created by TabbyTom, who agrees that if you can see light at the end of the tunnel it is undoubtedly a train coming the other way.

16. In an early "Star Trek" film, the Shakespeare-and Melville-quoting villain is bent on revenge for having been abandoned on an inhospitable planet years earlier by Captain Kirk. Who is the villain?
