Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals: Which of these is not a characteristic of a draught horse?

Answer: Speed

Draught horses, sometimes called draft horses, are bred for heavy work such as pulling plows or hauling heavy loads. Draughts are not a specific breed. They can be ridden, but would be more 'plodding' than other types of equine.
2. Geography: Which of these is the farthest north?

Answer: Rochester, New York

Each degree of longitude is sub-divided into 60 minutes, each of which divided into 60 seconds. Rochester would be 43 degree, 9 minutes, and 56 seconds, slightly north of the other three.

Rochester- 43 degree 9' 56"
Utica- 43 degree 5' 48"
Buffalo- 42 degree 17' 17"
Schenectady- 42 degree 48' 15"
3. History: Which of these wars started first?

Answer: Pequot War

The Pequot War of 1634 was between the New England colonists and the Pequot Indians. It was fought in revenge for Pequot attacks upon the colonists.

The French and Indian War of 1689 was between the British colonists and the French, who were aligned with some Native American tribes. It was part of the Hundred Years War between Britain and France. Both countries fought for dominion over America.

The American Revolution started in 1776. During this struggle, the new American colonies fought to be free of British domination.

The Black Hawk War of 1832 was between Midwestern American militia and hostile Native American tribes lead by Black Hawk.
4. Humanities: Which of these artists is not associated with the Cubist movement?

Answer: Salvador Dali

Cubism was an avant-garde style of art in the early part of the 20th century. It involved breaking an image into many pieces; the paintings had many perspectives rather than a single view. Picasso and other Cubists were influenced by Cezanne's painting techniques. Dali popularized the Surrealism movement.
5. Literature: Who is the author of "The Luck of Roaring Camp" and "The Outcasts of Poker Flat"?

Answer: Bret Harte

Bret Harte was a popular writer of pioneer and mining literature, mostly taking place in California. He also achieved some fame as a poet. He was appointed Counsel to Germany and later Scotland and spent his last years in Europe. Mark Twain wrote a scathing criticism of Harte's work and character after Harte's death.
6. Movies: "Pink Flamingos" (1972) is John Water's cult film dedicated to filth and bad taste. The star, Divine, is an obese female impersonator who strives for the title of the Filthiest Person Alive. In the final scene, Divine stoops to pick something off the ground and eats it. What is it?

Answer: Dog feces

Both Waters and Divine maintain that the feces was real and not a prop. Divine's final line is that she is "not only the filthiest person in the world, but is also the world's filthiest actress". In a list of 50 films you should see before you die, compiled by British Channel Four, "Pink Flamingos" ranked 29th.
7. Sports: In what sport would you hear the terms blue line, power play, and face-off?
