Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Old Madge woke up to the sound of birdsong. Which of these species of bird was most likely providing a dawn chorus outside the witch's woodland cottage?

Answer: Chaffinch

Madge likes living out in the woods - it makes her feel 'at one' with nature. Sometimes the smaller animals try to be 'at one' with Madge by nesting in her wild hair while she sleeps.

Chaffinches live in woodlands across the UK and can make a lot of noise early in the morning. Arctic skuas live by the sea and only come to land in order to breed. Tawny owls are active at night. They occasionally wake Madge up when it's dark, but rarely first thing in the morning. Mute swans are not actually silent, but the old witch wouldn't refer to their grunts and hisses as 'birdsong'.
2. Madge is out of bed, which means it must be time for breakfast! Which of these things will Madge be cooking in her traditional full English breakfast?

Answer: Bacon

Old Madge loves a full English breakfast! A wide variety of foods can go into a full English, but there are some things that are definitely not included. Madge would never put rice, scones, or carrots in her fry up, but she would definitely have bacon. Throw in some sausages, toast, fried mushroom, fried tomato, and a fried egg, and you've got yourself a full English.
3. Old Madge has put on one of her many black velvet dresses and a thick woollen cardigan. All that's left is her silver pentagram necklace. Which of these religions is the pentagram most closely associated with?

Answer: Wicca

The pentagram is a five-pointed star and has been used as a symbol of Christianity. Each point represented the five wounds of Jesus at his crucifixion, but the symbol is rarely used by Christians now. Since the mid-20th century, the pentagram has been more closely associated with Wicca, where each point symbolises one of the five elements. Old Madge isn't particularly religious, but she likes the necklace design.

It goes with her silver spider web earrings and her huge ruby rings.
4. After lunch, Madge picks up her favourite instrument. It's a series of bamboo tubes of different lengths. What can Madge play, albeit badly?

Answer: Panpipes

Madge loves folk music, and the thing she likes best is joining in with her panpipes. The instrument got its name from the Greek god Pan who, according to the myth, played a set of pipes. Each tube gets a little bit longer and the player blows across the top to produce a noise. When Madge reaches for her pipes, leave the area immediately! She's pretty awful...
5. Old Madge decides to take a stroll. In a woodland clearing, she looks up at the wispy white clouds high in the sky. What name is given to these kinds of clouds?

Answer: Cirrus

Cirrus clouds form high in the sky at around 5km to 13km. Made of ice particles that form wispy streaks, cirrus clouds indicate that a warm front is on the way. All of this weather terminology goes over Old Madge's head (ha ha!), but she loves lying in the grass and watching the clouds go by.
6. A famous literary witch is coming over for afternoon tea. Which fictional character helped to set up Hogwarts and gave her name to one of the four houses in the "Harry Potter" series?

Answer: Helga Hufflepuff

Helga Hufflepuff was one of the four founders of Hogwarts, a school of magic in J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series. Each year, when students first arrived at Hogwarts, the magical Sorting Hat would divide them into four houses based on qualities like intelligence and bravery. The other three founders looked for a particular attribute in the students that they chose for their houses, but Helga Hufflepuff was welcoming to all. The picture is the Hufflepuff cup, a relic that played a significant role in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows".

Helga isn't going to drink afternoon tea out of a golden cup, though, so Old Madge had better wash up some mugs.
7. While her guest was talking, Madge was gazing out of her cottage window. She caught a glimpse of a tiny green hat. Which mythical creature could she have spotted in the bushes?

Answer: A leprechaun

Leprechauns were a type of fairy found in Irish folklore. They looked like tiny men wearing a hat and coat, though the colour they traditionally wore has changed over the centuries from red to green. The one Madge could see had a big green hat and a ginger beard.

She abruptly rushed out of the room mid-conversation to go and find it. Leprechauns grant three wishes if you catch one, and Madge needs a new stove.
8. Old Madge needs to write a letter, but the items in her house haven't made it to the 21st century yet. In fact, the object she's using to write with went out of fashion in the 19th century. What is it?

Answer: A quill

Typewriters were first developed in the mid-19th century and were widely used well into the 20th century. It's a little bit advanced for poor Old Madge who eyes anything that could be considered 'technology' with suspicion. She much prefers a quill and ink.

A quill is a large feather taken from the wing of a bird like a goose or a swan. The tip of the feather is sharpened to a point and dipped in ink so that it can be used for writing.
9. It's time for Madge to settle down to watch a cricket match through her crystal ball. A very important Test cricket series is about to start. Which two nations participate in The Ashes?

Answer: Australia and England

Test cricket is the longest form of the sport with matches lasting up to five days (though the players are allowed stop for food and sleep). The Ashes is a Test series between England and Australia that began in 1882. Old Madge saw the first match when she was a young girl (who says longevity potions don't work?!).

The name came about when Australia beat England for the first time on English soil. A newspaper called "The Sporting Times" wrote a humorous obituary lamenting the death of English cricket.

The obituary claimed that the body would be cremated and taken to Australia. The next time the countries played, England fought to 'win back the ashes'.
10. After a late night watching cricket, Madge finally went to bed. Now she's dreaming about a famous landmark she visited on holiday. In her dream, the statue of Oceanus came to life and started throwing coins back at the tourists gathered in the square. Which landmark is she dreaming of?

Answer: Fontana di Trevi

Old Madge went on holiday to Rome where she saw the Fontana di Trevi, or Trevi Fountain in English. The Greek god Oceanus stands on a chariot pulled by sea horses at the centre of the fountain. People throw coins into the fountain and, according to superstition, they will visit Rome again.

When Madge threw her coin in the fountain, she wasn't expecting her next visit to be a literal nightmare!
