Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From little beginnings grow amazing musicians, and this youngster quickly became one of the best of his generation. In fact, when Paul Simon won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 1976, he thanked this artist for not releasing an album that year. Which singer/songwriter, known for playing a mean harmonica, had his first big hit with the word 'Little' attached to his name?

Answer: Little Stevie Wonder

If there was ever an example of a child prodigy, Stevie Wonder was it. He signed his first contract with Motown Records when he was only 11 years old and it was his producer, Clarence Paul, who gave him the name Little Stevie Wonder. His first number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, "Fingertips", came when Wonder was just 13 years old.

His performance of this on "The Ed Sullivan Show" was electric. His next big hit didn't come until his voice settled down, after puberty, but he has repeatedly proven himself since then, with hit after hit and over 20 Grammys to his credit.

His greatest achievement, in my humble opinion, was his album "Songs in the Key of Life" (1976).
2. The capital of the American state of Arkansas, this place sounds like somewhere you might find good music. Which 'Little' city is this?

Answer: Little Rock

Named for a rock formation on the river and incorporated in 1831, Little Rock is not only the state capital, but is also the state's largest city (by population). With several museums and two major universities, Little Rock has a lot to offer. In 1967 Little Rock was the centre of controversy because Orval Faubus, the State Governor at the time, called in the National Guard to prevent the integration of schools, as dictated by the Supreme Court. President Eisenhower's actions in taking control of the Guard away from Faubus', and sending in an additional 1,200 paratroopers prevented a riot and allowed the nine students, known as 'The Little Rock Nine', to attend the previously all-white school.
3. This 'Little' is the star of both a 1945 book by E.B. White and a 1999 movie (although the movie is only loosely based on the book). Which murine 'Little' is this?

Answer: Stuart Little

Voiced by Michael J. Fox in the movie, Stuart Little is a mouse who is adopted by a human family to be a little brother to their son, George. George is initially not as enamored with the mouse as his parents are and Stuart has to prove himself worthy.

The family cat isn't thrilled about Stuart's status in the house either and hatches a plan to have him ousted. Geena Davis and Hugh Laurie star as Mrs. and Mr. Little.
4. In 1975 Simon and Garfunkel had a top ten hit (U.S. Billboard Hot 100) with this 'Little' single, five years after the duo had split up. Which song, with the lyric "Nothing but the dead and dying...", had the two collaborating again?

Answer: My Little Town

"My Little Town" was written by Paul Simon with Art Garfunkel in mind. It reflected Garfunkel's feelings about his childhood and the area of town that he grew up in, where his interest in music was not encouraged, to say the least.
Simon released it on his 1975 album, "Still Crazy After All These Years" and the two performed it on "Saturday Night Live" on October 18, 1975.
5. Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) was a comedic genius whose silent films were loved by many. What 'Little' nickname was he known by?

Answer: The Little Tramp

The Little Tramp was Chaplin's best known character. He wore a bowler hat, sported a thick mustache, carried a cane and bumbled his way into many hearts. He relied heavily on physical humour and facial nuances instead of dialogue. Chaplin's work became increasingly political and his 1940 film, "The Great Dictator" brought both Hitler and fascism under attack.
Unfortunately Chaplin came under the scrutiny of J. Edgar Hoover (Director of the F.B.I.) who started a smear campaign against him, eventually accusing him of being a communist. A paternity suit brought against Chaplin also muddied his public image.
Born in England, Chaplin returned there in 1952 for the premier of his film "Limelight". The day after he left his re-entry permit to the United States was revoked, and Chaplin never returned.
6. Dustin Hoffman stars as Jack Crabb, a 121 year-old man recounting his life in the American West, in this 1970, comedic movie. Which 'Little' movie is this?

Answer: Little Big Man

Jack Crabb has had an extraordinary life, if you can believe everything he says. His parents are killed by Pawnee Indians when he is ten and he and his sister (who later escaped) were taken to be raised in a Cheyenne village, until he is 16 and captured by the U.S. Cavalry in a raid. From there he wanders through life being, at various times, the apprentice to a snake oil salesman, owner of a General Store, and a 'muleskinner' for General Custer, among other things.

He abandons the Cavalry when he witnesses them murdering women and children and returns to the Cheyenne tribe that raised him. Jack's home is raided by Custer's men and his child and wives are killed, which unhinges him a little and he becomes the town drunk in Deadwood, witnessing the shooting of Wild Bill Hickok.

He eventually becomes a scout for Custer, leading him into the fateful battle of the Little Big Horn.
7. This master of impressions has earned the nickname The Man of a Thousand Voices, a nickname given to him by Mel Blanc. Which Canadian 'Little' is this, who has been called 'the best impressionist in the world'?

Answer: Rich Little

Born in 1938 in Ottawa, Canada, Rich Little performed in nightclubs with his friend Geoff Scott, when they were still teenagers. From there he became a disc jockey until he was asked to audition for Judy Garland's new variety T.V. show (1963). His gift for impressions soon made him much in demand and he could often be found as a guest on "The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts", among other shows including his own, "The Rich Little Show" (1976).

He has continued to do voice work, including providing the voice for David Niven in two of "The Pink Panther" movies, when Niven was too sick to do the work himself.
8. Running from 1974 to 1983, this family-oriented show gives us a glimpse of life in the American Midwest in the late 1800s. Which 'Little' show is this?

Answer: Little House on the Prairie

Based on the semi-autobiographical books of Laura Ingalls Wilder, "Little House on the Prairie" was a very popular television show starring Melissa Gilbert as Laura and Michael Landon as Charles Ingalls or Pa, as his kids call him. The show gives us a blend of the hardships of life at the time, which are not without their rewards, peppered with a strong flavour of family values.
9. This band, known for its smooth sound and vocal harmonies, hailed from Melbourne, Australia in the mid 70s. Which 'Little' band is this, whose biggest Billboard Hot 100 hit was "Reminiscing" (1977), reaching number 3 on the chart?

Answer: Little River Band

Little River Band has enjoyed success in both Australia and North America. Other hits have included "Help is On its Way" (1977), "Happy Anniversary" (1977), "Lady" (1978), "Lonesome Loser" (1979), "Cool Change" (1979), and "Take it Easy on Me" (1981) to name a few. They were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame in 2004.
10. "Game of Thrones" is a very popular HBO series that gives us a brutal, medieval world where people live and die by the sword and dragons do exist. Which character, who lives more by his wits than his sword and specialises in deception, is known by a 'Little' nickname?

Answer: Littlefinger

Peter Baelish was given the nickname Littlefinger by Catelyn Stark's brother, back when she was still a Tully. The nickname was a reference to both his small stature and to the seat of his family's holding, an area know as The Fingers. Although he is a lord, his house is a minor one. He was fostered at Riverrun, home of the Tullys, where he fell in love with Catelyn, who didn't return his love and married Eddard Stark.
Through deceit, manipulation and murder, Littlefinger rises from his very humble beginnings to be one of the most powerful, and least trustworthy, forces in the kingdoms.
