Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The meaning of some surnames is lost in the mists of time, while some others are fairly easy to deduce. What is the generally accepted meaning of the name Armstrong?

Answer: Strong-armed

There is a longstanding legend that the first Armstrong was an armour bearer for a king of Scotland. When the king's horse was killed under him, this armour bearer, Fairbairn by name, swept the king up in one arm onto his own mount. The king decreed that the man should henceforth be known as Armstrong.
2. This famous Armstrong was actually born with the surname Gunderson, and only changed his name to Armstrong when he was adopted by his stepfather as a young boy. He is best known for his success on two wheels, for his fight against cancer, and for his spectacular fall from grace.

Answer: Lance Armstrong

Lance Armstrong started his athletic career as a swimmer, but moved quite early on to the triathlon. He began to focus on his skills as a bicyclist as a young man. At the age of 25 he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Within two years, after surgery and drug treatment, he was back racing, and winning.

However, those wins were questioned, and in 2012 he was stripped of his honours and banned from cycling for life for doping.
3. Our next Armstrong is a very flexible, um, person. He's muscular and blond, with an extremely pliable nature.

Answer: Stretch Armstrong

The Stretch Armstrong toy was first introduced in 1976. He was filled with a corn syrup gel, which enabled him to be stretched "four times actual size!".
4. This Sweet Child might be loosely considered an "American Idiot" - he's a high school dropout, after all. It doesn't seem to have held him back, though.

Answer: Billie Joe Armstrong

Armstrong formed the band Sweet Children in 1987 with Mike Dirnt and John Kiffmeyer. That band morphed into Green Day, whose 2004 release, "American Idiot" received a Grammy for Best Rock Album.
5. This Armstrong is very successful in the adult movie industry. Among his many awards for directing, art direction and screenwriting, he has also won awards for more, er, active roles.

Answer: Brad Armstrong

The Toronto-born Armstrong (birth name Rodney Hopkins) is highly regarded in his industry. He has won numerous AVN (Adult Video News) and X-Rated Critics' Organization awards, and is in both organizations' Halls of Fame.
6. This Armstrong claimed to have been born on July 4, 1900, a claim which, unfortunately, was not quite true. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and innovative musicians of the twentieth century. Give his real name, please, not his nickname.

Answer: Louis Armstrong

Among accolades and achievements too numerous to mention, "Satchmo" (August 4, 1901 - July 6, 1971) set a record in 1964 as the oldest artist to have a number one hit on the Billboard Top 100 with "Hello Dolly". The US issued his 32 cent commemorative stamp in 1985.
7. Alex Louis Armstrong is a character in an anime/manga set in an alternate reality where science has followed a different pathway than in ours. Which series is it?

Answer: Fullmetal Alchemist

Alex Louis is an over-the-top character - a highly emotional big guy who sparkles when he takes his shirt off.

The premise of "Fullmetal Alchemist", speaking very roughly, is that while in our world the discovery of steam power set off the Industrial Revolution, in its world progress has been powered by alchemy.
8. This Armstrong was born in Ohio, and served in the Korean War on aircraft carriers. On July 20 1969, he did something no human before him had ever done.

Answer: Neil Armstrong

He was the first man to set foot on the moon.

Neil Armstrong has attempted to manage his fame carefully, and avoid exploitation. He stopped signing autographs in 1994, after finding that they were often being resold for money (with a brisk side-business in forgeries). In 2004, he sued his barber after finding that the man had sold some of his hair to a collector.
9. In 1922, Herbert Rowse Armstrong was the only British solicitor to have had this experience. What was it?

Answer: He was hanged for murder

His story reads like an Agatha Christie novel. A professional rival of his became very ill after taking tea with Armstrong. The town doctor was suspicious, and investigated further. It was found that the rival's sister had become ill a few weeks earlier, after eating some chocolates that had been sent to the house anonymously. The symptoms of both these illnesses closely matched those of Armstrong's wife, who had died the year before. Armstrong was arrested for attempted murder of his rival, and, once his wife's body was exhumed, convicted of murder in her death. He was executed on May 31, 1922.

The "He went to Heaven" option is just a lawyer joke, sorry.
10. This person has Armstrong as a middle name. He is famous for a military action that was either a gallant stand, or a fiasco of mismanagement, depending on whom you ask.

Answer: Lieutenant Colonel Custer

George Armstrong Custer lost most of his command, and his own life, at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Controversy surrounds this battle - whether the loss was due to mismanagement by Custer, cowardice on the part of Reno, disobedience on the part of Benteen, or was unavoidable.

The incorrect options are the names of men involved in other famous military disasters - the charge of the Light Brigade, and the Battle of Isandlwana.
