Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which muscle in the body is strongest, relative to its size?

Answer: Tongue

The tongue is the strongest muscle relative to its size. Each taste bud on your tongue only lasts about ten days. Tongues are much like fingerprints, no tongue is the same!
2. The Dalmatian breed of puppies is born without which of the following?

Answer: Its spots

Dalmatian puppies are actually born without their spots. Their hair grows in white and they get their spots later on, after about two weeks of age. The puppies are born with a slight pattern on their skin. This pattern can give the owner a good idea of where the spots will be when the puppies' hair grows in.
3. A queen bee can lay up to how many eggs a day?

Answer: More than 1,500

As crazy as it sounds, a queen bee spends her whole life working. She may take a few breaks, but she will lay more than 1,500 eggs a day for up to five years! And we thought worker bees had it tough.
4. The adult human body has 206 bones. How many does an infant's body have?

Answer: 300

Babies are born with more bones. This is because the baby has to fit through the birth canal. The extra bones (most of which are in the skull) meld together as the child grows.
5. The opossum is a strange animal. What is true about the Virgina opossum's gestation period?

Answer: It lasts only 11-13 days

The Virginia opossum has one of the shortest gestation periods of any animal. The newborn opossums are basically embryos at birth. They continue to develop inside of their mother's pouch and eventually travel on her back until they are old enough to take care of themselves.
6. Do hair and nails continue to grow after death?

Answer: No

If you've seen a movie where a dead person is dug up and has extra-long hair and nails, it's not because the hair and nails were still growing. Human bodies dry out and begin to shrink after death. This pulls back the skin, revealing more hair or nail than showed when the body was first buried.
7. Can horses vomit?

Answer: No

Horses can't vomit, because they have a strong band of muscles around their esophagus that squeezes down on the stomach, creating a one-way flow. Once something goes down, it can't come back up.
8. Fresh-cut flowers are always nice as gifts or just to brighten things up. What makes tulips different from other fresh cut flowers?

Answer: They can keep growing after they're cut

Interestingly enough, tulips will keep growing after they are cut. It is best to get them into water as soon as the stem is sliced, so that the integrity of the stalk is not compromised. Tulips can grow about an inch after being cut. They also twist, turn, droop, straighten and turn in the vase.
9. In one's home, dust is comprised mostly of what type of particles?

Answer: dead skin

Let's face it. Dust is interesting--and it's full of dead skin. It is also comprised of organic matter, dirt, fibers, and many other tiny particles. Is that a dusting rag I see in your hand? I thought so.
10. Natural pearls melt in what substance?

Answer: vinegar

While this is not true about synthetic pearls, the real ones will melt in vinegar. Please, if you're unsure about whether your pearls are real or not, don't put them in vinegar to find out!
