Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. January 1: In 1959 the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA) proposed Project Horizon. It was to be a Cold War defensive system that would protect the United States from potential enemies. Where was it scheduled to be located?

Answer: The moon

Project Horizon never got beyond a feasibility study and was scuttled in 1966, mostly due to its six billion dollar cost. German missile experts Wernher von Braun and Heinz-Hermann Koelle headed up the study. The plan called for establishing a space station from which materials and men could be scuttled back and forth.

The moon station would be built using cylindrical metal tanks, 10 feet in diameter and 20 feet long and was to be powered by nuclear energy. Twenty four astronauts would be trained to occupy the twelve man station.
2. January 4: On November 18, 1973 Richard Nixon on nationwide television declared that "he was not a crook". What was the site of the speech?

Answer: Disney World

Nixon was at the Contemporary Hotel located on the grounds of Disney World, Florida. He had been invited to speak to Associated Press Managing Editors, much of which was a question/answer format. Nixon went into some detail about his personal finances and proclaimed that he had never personally benefited from his years of public service.

He occasionally misspoke and rambled but seemed to miss the key issue of integrity in government.
3. January 10: Where is the Fissure of Rolando located?

Answer: In the human brain

Encyclopedias and dictionaries define the Fissure of Rolando as "a brain fissure extending upward on the lateral surface of both hemispheres; separates the frontal and parietal lobes." In others words, it shields the frontal lobe just behind the forehead from the parietal lobe in the back of the head. Its main function is to cushion the brain from trauma.
4. January 21: If you are ultra-rich, why waste time and money on a luxury yacht or high stakes casino? Why not rent a country? Which of these countries is for rent?

Answer: Liechtenstein

Yes, just for 70,000 dollars a night, Liechtenstein is yours. The price includes accommodations for 150 people. For your money you get a symbolic key to the country, followed by wine tasting at the estate of the Head of State. Other options include cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoe hiking, tobogganing, fireworks, and horse-drawn carriage rides through the capital Vaduz.

All though the rental seems a bit desperate, it was mostly to compete with villages in Austria and Switzerland that 'rent' for 60,000 per night. Not that Liechtenstein really needs the money as unemployment is almost unknown. It is listed as headquarters for thousands of companies -- more companies than there are residents of Lichtenstein. Its economy is rated in the top three of the world per capita, after Luxembourg and Dubai. Its 37,000 residents live in 62 square miles nestled in the Alps between Austria and Switzerland. Fact: Liechtenstein leads the world in the export of false teeth.
5. January 31: In the Christian Bible there are 52 references to various Marys. Which of these is the only Mary, and only woman, mentioned by name in the Islamic Koran?

Answer: Mary, mother of Jesus

In the Koran, Mary, mother of Jesus, is referred in Arabic as Meriam. Most references to women in the Koran are identified only by their relationship to men. However, Mary (Meriam) has her own chapter.

Meriam closely corresponds to Luke's gospel in the Christian Bible. The chapter deals with the circumstances of Jesus's birth; God's fatherhood of Jesus, however, is denied. We read of the agony and pain of Mary's childbirth. God is portrayed as compassionate and attentive to Mary's needs and provides her with sustenance and reassurances.
6. February 8: From what author and work (works) do we get the words zany, unreal, puking, and bedazzled?

Answer: Shakespeare's plays

Each of these gentlemen were fine wordsmiths in their own right but Shakespeare is given credit for these. Some of these might have been slang or street talk but the first time they are seen in print is in Shakespeare's plays.

"Zany" is from "Love's Labour's Lost".
"Unreal" is from "Macbeth".
"Bedazzled" is from "Taming of the Shrew".
"Puking" is from "As You Like it".
7. February 20: The United States and Canada each have six time zones; Australia has three; Russia has nine. How many time zones in China?

Answer: One

If China followed the Greenwich System, it would span five time zones which it did until 1949. But the Communist Revolution decreed one time zone for all of China, perhaps hoping to foster more unity among the provinces. With few exceptions this still true today.

The Greenwich line divides the earth into twenty-four segments. Depending on geographical accommodations, most counties follow the Greenwich system.
8. February 28: In a panic, I rushed to my doctor as I did not understand what my body was trying to tell me. He said: "Relax! It's only borborygmi".

Answer: Abdominal rumblings

Borborgymi are gastro rumblings that are generally benign. They may be attributable to something simple like hunger or over-eating. It could be a prelude to diarrhea or constipation.

However, if the condition changes from acute to chronic borborymus, medical intervention may be indicated. Coeliac disease, colitis, diverticulitis, and irritable bowel syndrome might be the cause. Often these can be controlled by diet.

The word is an onomatopoetic word derived from Greek.
9. March 3: In Finland, particularly among the Laplanders, there was a unit of measurement called poronkusema. What does it measure?

Answer: The distance a reindeer can travel before urinating

Finlanders know that reindeer must stop if it has to urinate. Therefore, in tracking reindeer, one looked for those signs. A reindeer urinates about ever six miles. This and several other measurements are, of course, obsolete but may be used by tradition, such as two towns may be two poronkusema apart or twelve miles.
10. March 20: An ambitious Canadian politician says his goal is to live at 24 Sussex Drive, Ottawa. What office does he seek?

Answer: The Prime Minister

Joseph Merrill Currier, lumberman and Member of Parliament, built the house he called Gorffwysfa (resting place) in 1868. In 1951 it was designated as one of the official residences of the Canadian Prime Minister along with Harrington Park. Its style is Norman Revival, has 35 rooms over four floors connected by an elevator and staircases.

At this writing 24 Sussex is in need of structural repair and updating. Some have suggested that it be demolished. Unlike the White House or 10 Downing Street, no government offices are located there.
