Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which city in England was traditionally famous for the manufacture of cutlery?

Answer: Sheffield

Located in Yorkshire in the north of England, Sheffield became a centre of the steel industry. It specialised in cutlery, notably in stainless steel, which was developed in the area.
2. What name is given to a painting done on wet plaster which then dries to become an integral part of the wall?

Answer: Fresco

This technique is called Fresco, the Italian word meaning "fresh", because it is done using water based paint on freshly laid plaster. Obviously, the work has to be done quickly as the water does not take long to evaporate. As the plaster dries, the painting becomes part of the plasterwork.

There are examples of fresco work going back to ancient Egyptian times but it has become particularly associated with the Renaissance period in Italy.
3. In 1989 which singer from Soft Cell joined Gene Pitney to take a remake of his song "Something's Gotten Hold of my Heart" to number one in the British charts?

Answer: Marc Almond

Prior to this number one hit version of a record Gene Pitney had recorded solo in 1967, Marc Almond had had a number one UK hit as lead singer for Soft Cell in 1981 with "Tainted Love".
4. Which Womble shares its name with a river in South America?

Answer: Orinoco

The Wombles were the central characters in books by Elizabeth Beresford, the first of which was published in 1968. The Wombles were an early example of environmentalism, as they were famous for gathering humans' discarded rubbish on Wimbledon Common and recycling things.

Apart from the book series, the Wombles became very popular in an animated television series and made several successful records including "Minuetto Allegretto", which was based on music by Mozart.
5. With a musical theme by Vangelis, which 1981 Academy Award Best Picture was a surprise winner over Warren Beatty's "Reds" and "On Golden Pond"?

Answer: Chariots of Fire

Starring Ian Charleson as the Scottish athlete Eric Liddell and Ben Cross as his English rival Harold Abrahams, this beautiful film tells the story of their tribulations in preparing for the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. Though the two were among the favourites for the 100 metres, Liddell refused to run in that race because the heats were on a Sunday and he was a devout Christian. Abrahams, who overcame anti-Semitism to make the British team, won the gold but Liddell also won gold in the 400 metres.

The music by Vangelis sets the tone superbly and adds considerably to the atmosphere.
6. Pierce Brosnan made his debut as James Bond in "Goldeneye". In which film did he make his second appearance as Bond?

Answer: Tomorrow Never Dies

Made in 1997, this was the eighteenth film in the franchise series. Among Brosnan's co-stars in this film were Jonathan Pryce and Teri Hatcher.
7. What term refers to a large scale musical piece for soloists, choir and orchestra, examples of which include Handel's "Messiah", Haydn's "The Creation" and Tippett's "A Child of Our Time"?

Answer: Oratorio

The "Messiah" is probably the most famous oratorio of all, complete with the "Hallelujah Chorus". The tradition that the audience stands during the chorus is said to have originated in a performance in 1743 when King George II stood up during it so the audience had to do so as well.

However, there is no documented evidence that this ever happened so the origins of the practice are uncertain.
8. What is the name for a religious painting, often on wood, in the Byzantine church, with the same term being used to describe a symbol on a computer screen?

Answer: Icon

Though most associated with the Eastern Orthodox, or Byzantine, church, icons are also found in some Roman Catholic churches. Some icons are made of cast metal or even created as mosaics.

The origin of the use of the word to describe the computing symbol is obscure, but probably came about because it is basically a small picture, as are the religious icons.
9. What is the term for an angle that has more than 180 degrees but less than 360 degrees?

Answer: Reflex

An acute angle is one measuring fewer than 90 degrees, an obtuse angle is one measuring more than 90 degrees but fewer than 180 degrees.
10. Now take the first letter of each answer and mix them up to give you the name of a technology company. Where there is more than one word in the answer you only need the first letter of the first word.

Answer: Microsoft

Founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1975, Microsoft has grown to be one of the largest corporations in the world.
