Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which adjective, meaning "very severe", is derived from the name of a lawgiver in ancient Athens?

Answer: Draconian

Active in the seventh century BCE, Draco (sometimes called Drakon) is the first lawgiver in ancient Athens whose name we know. The Athenians asked him to produce a set of written laws to replace the traditional practices, but were shocked by the severity of his laws. Debtors could be forced into slavery and the death penalty was imposed for minor crimes. Most of these severe punishments were repealed by Solon in the next century.
2. Sodium compounds of which halogen element are often added to drinking water to give protection against tooth decay?

Answer: Fluorine

The practice of adding fluorides to water arose from the discovery in the 1930s that cavities were less common in children growing up in areas where the water contained natural fluorine compounds. This led to Grand Rapids in Michigan being the first city to choose to add these to the water supply. Although in some places the practice has been controversial, the practice has now become common in the USA, the United Kingdom and many other countries.

The other chemicals listed are also halogens, but you would not want them added to your drinking water!
3. The capital city of which US state shares its name with the home town of the Simpsons?

Answer: Illinois

Settlement in Springfield, Illinois, dates back to about 1820 and while still a young city was the residence of Abraham Lincoln before he became President.

For many years there was debate about where Springfield in "The Simpsons" was located but in 2012 Matt Groening revealed that it was named after Springfield, Oregon. He chose the name because it was close to his own home city of Portland, because as a child he had watched a TV series called "Father Knows Best" set in "Springfield" which he had imagined to be his local city, and also because it is a common name in many states, so it represented "Anywhere, USA".
4. Who played the role of Elizabeth Swann in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" film franchise?

Answer: Keira Knightley

Daughter of theatrical parents, Keira Knightley started acting at a very young age in commercials and television series. Her first major role was in the 1999 film "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" and within four years she won the lead female role opposite Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom in "The Curse of the Black Pearl". Since then she has gone on to star in many films, often historical in nature, and was Oscar nominated in 2006 and 2014.
5. What is the home city of the former association football European cup winners Benfica?

Answer: Lisbon

The full name of the club is Sport Lisboa e Benfica. Founded in 1904, the club has been the most successful in Portugal for many years, winning more championship titles than any other club.

The club's highest achievement came in the early 1960s, when their players included the then superstar Eusebio. In 1961 and 1962 Benfica defeated first Barcelona and then Real Madrid in successive finals to win the European Cup, the predecessor to the Champions League.
6. In music, what name is given to a note that is neither sharp nor flat?

Answer: Natural

The natural notes are represented by the letters A, B, C, D, E, F and G. A sharp note is half a step higher than the natural and a flat is half a step lower.
7. Also known as the fish hawk, which bird re-established itself at Boat of Garten in Scotland in 1959 and at Bassenthwaite Lake in England in 1999?

Answer: Osprey

Though a widely distributed species across all continents, ospreys became extinct in Britain during the First World War, so their reappearance in the 1950s became headline news.

Their arrival in Scotland was natural, probably through birds from Scandinavia, but in England it was done deliberately using chicks from Scotland that were released in England. Following their annual migration some of these birds returned to nest in England and, later, in Wales.
8. In 1990 Benazir Bhutto became the first elected head of government to give birth while in office. Of which country was she Prime Minister?

Answer: Pakistan

Benazir Bhutto was the daughter of Zulfikar Bhutto, who was Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1973-1977, when he was removed in a military coup and executed. She and her mother took over leadership of the Pakistan People's Party which her father had led and she served as Prime Minister from 1988-1990, during which period her daughter Bakhtawar was born, and again from 1993-1996.

After a period living abroad she returned to Pakistan in 2007 but was assassinated two months later.
9. Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet were the members of which group formed in 1981 whose biggest hit in Britain was "Only You"?

Answer: Yazoo

The duo only performed together for two years before Vince Clarke, who had previously been a member of Depeche Mode, went on to form Erasure with Andy Bell and Alison Moyet followed a highly successful solo career.

The song "Only You", which Vince had written while still with Depeche Mode, was the biggest hit in Britain for Yazoo, reaching number two in the charts in 1982, but a version by The Flying Pickets in close harmony without instrumental accompaniment became the Christmas number one in the following year.
10. Now use the initial letter of the first word in each of these answers to form an anagram giving the two word name of a long lived band founded in the 1960s.

Answer: Pink Floyd

One of the biggest names in rock music, Pink Floyd formed in 1964. They went on to have some of the most successful albums of all time, notably "The Dark Side of the Moon", which became the third best selling album in history up to 2020, and "The Wall", which was made into a film.

Members of Pink Floyd have included Nick Mason, Roger Waters, Dave Gilmour and Syd Barrett.
