Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of medical specialist treats patients with kidney conditions?

Answer: Nephrologist

A hepatologist deals with liver diseases, a cardiologist with heart conditions and a pulmonologist with lung issues. The name nephrologist comes from the nephron, which is the name of each part of a kidney that filters waste from the blood and turns it into urine for removal from the body.
2. With over forty paintings and thirty etchings, which seventeenth-century Dutch artist is usually recognised to have produced the largest number of self-portraits?

Answer: Rembrandt van Rijn

All of these were artists in what is often described as "The Golden Age of Dutch Painting". Van Dijck was best known as a landscape painter, Vermeer was known for domestic interiors, and Lely went to England where he rose to become the Court painter to King Charles II. Rembrandt is remembered as one of the greatest artists of his age.

His output was not as specialised as some as he painted landscapes, historical and Biblical scenes, scenes from everyday life and portraits.
3. What is the name of the patina that gives the Statue of Liberty its blue-green colour?

Answer: Verdigris

Rust is oxidation of iron, craquelure is the effect when fine cracks appear on the surface of an object as a result of drying or ageing, and galvanisation is the application of zinc as a protective covering to another metal, usually iron or steel. Verdigris is the patina that forms on copper or copper alloys such as bronze or brass when they are exposed to weather allowing a chemical reaction to take place.

It is usually a form of copper carbonate or copper chloride, the latter occurring nearer the sea where the salt water causes the reaction.
4. In 1984, "The Unforgettable Fire" was the title of the fourth album released by which band?

Answer: U2

The album included "Pride (In the Name of Love)" which has become one of the band's definitive songs and "MLK", both of them tributes to Martin Luther King. Bono, the lead singer, subsequently received an award from the King Centre for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta, Georgia.
5. Played by Agnes Moorehead, what was the name of Samantha's mother in the 1960s series, "Bewitched"?

Answer: Endora

Agnes Moorehead had a long career in theatre, film, radio and television as a character actress, but is remembered best as Endora. The other options are all the first names of other characters in "Bewitched".
6. In Greek mythology, which ship sailed to Colchis to retrieve the Golden Fleece?

Answer: Argo

Both Danais and Syracusia were actual names of ships recorded in Greek literature, but trireme is the name of a type of ship which had three banks of oars and was a formidable warship.

The Argo carried Jason and his crew, known as "The Argonauts" (meaning sailors on the Argo) on their voyage for the Golden Fleece.
7. Which brandy is distilled from apples and comes from Normandy?

Answer: Calvados

Cognac, Armagnac and Stravecchio are all distilled from grape wine. Cognac and Armagnac are each made only in a specific region of France, Stravecchio coming from Milan in Italy. By contrast, Calvados is distilled from apple cider so the flavour is significantly different. Like the others, its name is protected so it can only be called Calvados if it is produced in Normandy. Salut!
8. Which South American country is named after an Italian city?

Answer: Venezuela

When the Conquistadors began invading Central America at the end of the fifteenth century, they found local tribes living in houses called palafitos which were built in stilts over the water on the shores of the Guajira Peninsula. This reminded the Europeans of the city of Venice. On a voyage in the year 1499 Amerigo Vespucci (whose name was the origin of the word America) is credited with being the person who called the area "Veneziela" in Italian, meaning "Little Venice".

The equivalent Spanish word is Venezuela.
9. Which gemstone is mined at Coober Pedy and Lightning Ridge in Australia?

Answer: Opal

The first opals discovered in Australia were in Queensland, in 1889. By the end of World War I opals had also been found at Coober Pedy in South Australia and at Lightning Ridge in northern New South Wales. Coober Pedy, sometimes known as "the opal capital of the world" is particularly famous as the largest producer of opals, especially lighter coloured gems, but Lightning Ridge is the source of the very expensive black opals. 95% of all opals mined in the world are found in Australia.
10. You now have nine letters, which are the first letters of the first words in your answers. Now make an anagram of these to make the name of a North American city named after a British naval officer and explorer which has also been a host city in the Winter Olympics.

Answer: Vancouver

The city is named after the eighteenth-century British naval officer George Vancouver. Between 1791 and 1795 he commanded a voyage of exploration that ranged across the Pacific from Australia and New Zealand to Hawaii and then along the north-west coast of North America.

Vancouver is now the largest city in British Columbia and in 2010 served as the main host city for the Winter Olympics.
