Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The classic dystopian film "A Clockwork Orange" was directed by whom?

Answer: Stanley Kubrick

Written in 1962 by Anthony Burgess, "A Clockwork Orange" was produced as a film in 1971, starring Malcolm McDowell as Alex DeLarge. Alex and his "droogs" live in a violent world and have become desensitized to the effects of their actions on others. They spend their time drinking drugged milk, stealing, beating up people, and speaking 'nadsat' a modern language comprised mostly of Cockney English and Russian.

In their hedonistic world there appear to be no consequences. When Alex is sentenced to fourteen years in prison for murder, he volunteers for aversion therapy to reduce his sentence.

He is conditioned to react to his favorite piece of music, "The Ninth Symphony" by Ludwig Von, by getting nauseated and frightened, rather than violent and aroused.
2. British author Philip Pullman has written several 21st century novels. Which 2004 novel, illustrated by Paul Barber, another Brit, deals with an apprentice clock-maker and some devilish antagonists?

Answer: "Clockwork"

Pullman also wrote the trilogy "His Dark Materials", and his "Northern Lights" was made into a film "The Golden Compass". Pullman is a self-proclaimed agnostic atheist, whose works center around supernatural forces. He has won several literary prizes.
3. Iranian-born Australian author Cassandra Clare has published several novels of a fantastic nature. Which is the first in her "Clockwork" trilogy?

Answer: "Clockwork Angel"

Part of "The Infernal Devices", "Clockwork Angel" (2010) deals with vampires, werewolves and other charmers. It is followed by "Clockwork Prince" and "Clockwork Princess". Clare also wrote "City of Bones" - her first novel - "City of Ashes", "City of Glass" and "City of Fallen Angels".
4. Namco Networks/Spark Plug Games published a video game by what name?

Answer: "Lost in Time: The Clockwork Tower"

Eliza causes a time shift when she enters the clock tower in her town. The object of the game is to restore time by finding hidden objects, deciphering clues, solving puzzles and finding powers.
5. The British punk rock group The 4-Skins had an album called what?

Answer: "Clockwork Skinhead"

The album featured a song of the same name. "Clockwork Skinhead" was released in 2000.
6. The 1945 film "The Clock" starred which two actors falling in love?

Answer: Judy Garland and Robert Walker

This MGM film directed by Vincent Minnelli, later to become Judy's husband, was a romantic drama. In the film, the two leads plan to meet 'under the clock' at the Astor Hotel in New York, and later meet again near the clock resembling the famous one at Grand Central Station - but they are apparently in Penn Station.

This was Judy Garland's first non-singing role in a film. It was re-released in 2007. Garland had specifically asked for Minnelli to direct the film after a poor start by another director.
7. "The Clocks" was an Agatha Christie mystery novel.

Answer: True

This 1963 novel features many twists and turns. The mystery begins when a corpse is found surrounded by six clocks, four of which are set to 4:13. More bodies follow and the plot thickens, complete with red herrings. The unusual aspect of the story is that Hercule Poirot has claimed that he can solve the murder from his armchair at home, and, without visiting any crime scenes or interviewing any suspects, he does just that. Of course he is given information about the crime.
8. "In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo DaVinci and The Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love...500 years of democracy and peace - and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock." What film does this line come from?

Answer: "The Third Man"

Orson Welles starred in this 1949 film as Harry Lime. Joseph Cotton and Trevor Howard were also in it. "The Third Man" theme was played by Anton Karas on a zither and became extremely popular around the world where it hit the top of the charts in 1950.

This was a typical film noir, thick with intrigue and memorable for many of its scenes. Graham Greene wrote the screenplay and Carol Reed directed the film. The Swiss very kindly informed Welles that they had never produced a cuckoo clock, as those were made in the Black Forest in Germany
9. "Rock Around the Clock" was an enormous hit for Bill Haley and His Comets in the 1950s.

Answer: True

It was also a hit for several others: Pat Boone, Chubby Checker, Eddie Cochran, John Lennon, The Platters, and even Mae West! It was also used in the film "Blackboard Jungle", "American Graffiti" and the television show "Happy Days" among others. Very catchy tune!
10. The 1948 American film "The Big Clock" featured which two stars?

Answer: Ray Milland and Maureen O'Sullivan

Charles Laughton and his wife, Elsa Lanchester, were also in the film, as was Harry Morgan. This is another film noir, directed by John Farrow and based on a novel by Kenneth Fearing. The protagonist is first seen hiding behind a big clock, supposedly the largest and most sophisticated ever made, in the lobby of his building in New York.

The time is the 1940s and the story is told in flashbacks. There is plenty of intrigue, mistaken concepts and lying, while the hero pretends to officially investigate a murder that he really is investigating on his own as he seems to be the main suspect.

A remake was made in 1987 starring Kevin Costner, and entitled "No Way Out".
