Cooper portrayed Melody Jones, a mild-mannered cowboy, who is mistaken for the notorious gunfighter Monte Jarrad by the townspeople of Payneville when they see the monogram on his saddle. Also appearing in the film were Loretta Young as his childhood sweetheart, Cherry, and William Demarest as his sidekick George Fury.

Shirley played Laurey Williams, the heartthrob of cowboy Curly McLain (Gordon MacRae) in the 1955 musical "Oklahoma!". She went on to make television her forte, appearing in many TV specials, anthology series and guest roles. She may best be remembered as Shirley Partridge, matriarch of the singing Partridge family, which aired on ABC from 1970 to 1974.

Her stepson, David Cassidy, played her son Keith on this show.

Casey Jones was a real person - a railroad engineer born in 1863 who gained fame for his bravery. At one time he saved the life of a little girl who froze in fright on the railroad tracks as his train approached. He managed to climb out on cowcatcher and pull the girl to safety.

His most famous act was trying to stop his train, the Cannonball Express, from colliding with another stalled train. Jones died in 1900 in this crash, and was later immortalized in song.
