Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Operation Snow White was the name of a large and highly complex conspiracy to infiltrate U.S. government institutions carried out in the 1970s by whom?

Answer: The Church of Scientology

According to the official records of the trial of the main individuals involved, Operation Snow White placed Scientologists in key government bodies such as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and the Department of the Treasury with the aim of locating and purging all documents containing unfavourable information about Scientology, such as allegations of tax evasion and involvement in criminal activities. The operation, which was run by the Church of Scientology's secretive Guardian's Office, also involved wiretapping operations and burglaries.

As a result of Snow White, in 1979, eleven Scientology figures, including Mary Sue Hubbard, wife of Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard, were convicted of various offences including conspiracy, theft of government property and obstruction of justice. They were sentenced to jail terms and fines.

Question submitted by QMG's arch-criminal mastermind solan_goose, who has just been fined for driving in a bus lane, mere weeks after returning a library book two months late.
2. In 'Shrek the Third', the character of Snow White finally makes more than a brief cameo. She is voiced by Amy Poehler, but a different actress is used for her singing voice. Who is the Broadway star who played Glinda in 'Wicked' and is also known for her portrayal of Ivy Lynn on the TV series 'Smash'?

Answer: Megan Hilty

In 'Shrek the Third', Snow White becomes friends with Princess Fiona and several other characters. She gets to show off her singing chops when she, Fiona, and the others escape from the dungeon and get past the guards (talking trees). She starts with a song similar to the Disney cartoon, to call the birds and animals to her and distract the guards. Then she breaks into the opening of 'The Immigrant Song' by Led Zeppelin, and all the animals attack the guards.

Megan Hilty starred as Galinda (Glinda) in the Broadway musical 'Wicked'. She also performed with the national tour as well as the Los Angeles sit-down production.

Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel originated the roles of Glinda and Elphaba in the Broadway musical 'Wicked'.

Elaine Paige is one of the grande dames of Broadway and the West End. She originated the role of Grizabella in 'Cats' on the London stage, and in 1996, finally made her Broadway debut in 'Sunset Boulevard' as Norma Desmond.

All four of these ladies have had amazing careers on Broadway and the West End. I've touched on only a few of their performances. You can find more information about each of them and the shows they have performed in at The Internet Broadway Database (IMDb).

This question was submitted by SilverMoonsong, who really, *really*, REALLY dislikes snow. In fact, if she could choose to live anywhere in the world, it would be somewhere very warm and not far from the equator, like Bora Bora, or Bimini.
3. With a significantly larger market share than its main competitors (known collectively as the Seven Dwarfs), and bearing another colourful nickname, which very large computer company was known as Snow White during the 1960s?

Answer: IBM

International Business Machines (more widely recognized as "IBM" and also known as "Big Blue") dominated the computer industry in the 1960s as large companies began to realise how computers could help them. The IBM name dates back to the 1920s, with IBM's roots stretching back to the 1880s. The Seven Dwarfs included once-famous computer makers such as Honeywell and Burroughs. Dell was founded in the 1980s and made its name selling IBM-compatible personal computers direct to consumers.

4. Russian soap-star and actress Yulia Stepanova played the role of Snow White in the official video for the song 'Sonne', which appeared on this band's 2001 album, 'Mutter'. Which German industrial metal band recorded the song 'Sonne'?

Answer: Rammstein

It is said by band member Till Lindemann that 'Sonne' was written as the entry song for Ukrainian boxer Vitali Klitschko. We all know that traditional fairy tales can be cruel and very dark in their content, but the Snow White in this video is not like any Snow White you've ever seen before! Featuring bondage, sadism, dwarf abuse and drug abuse, she is most certainly not a young lady that Prince Charming would wish to take home to meet the king and queen!

Scorpions should need no introduction as one of Germany's longest lived rock bands; since beginning their career in 1965 they have become one of the world's biggest selling rock acts. Europe, who hails from Sweden, is a 'hair rock' band who had great success in 1986 with the album 'The Final Countdown'; huge success in spite of the single of the same name! Triptykon have their origins in Switzerland, being founded in 2008 by Thomas Gabriel Fischer, former member of black metal legends, Celtic Frost.

This question is brought to you by SisterSeagull who is known to play a mean air guitar while dressed like Snow White.
5. Actress Ginnifer Goodwin has played Snow White on American television in the ABC series 'Once Upon a Time'. On that same show, she has also played a teacher in Storybrooke, Maine. What is the teacher's name?

Answer: Mary Margaret Blanchard

Ginnifer Goodwin is perhaps best known as Margene Heffman, one of the three wives on the HBO series 'Big Love'.

Carrie Bliss is the name of the teacher played by Hayley Mills on the series "'Good Morning, Miss Bliss', which is the show that evolved into 'Saved by the Bell'.

Alice Landers is the name of the teacher played by Sue Randall on the American television series from the 1960s called 'Leave It to Beaver'.

Jennifer Honey is the name of the teacher played by Embeth Davidtz in the movie 'Matilda'.

This original composition was written by Dawgfan1995 with vocals by Dawgfan1995 and back-up dancing by the other contributing members of the QMG.
6. Many birds have been named "snowy" (and perhaps they are even white), but which of these is not one of them?

Answer: Snowy Ptarmigan

The ptarmigan's the odd one out despite turning a snowy white in winter. Snowy owls are found in the northern regions of Eurasia and North America. Snowy egrets' plumes were in demand for women's hat decorations until the species was protected under the US Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The snowy plover can be found on the coasts from California through the Caribbean.

Ertrum dusted the snow off his bird book and found this question.
7. A staple for many decades, 'Snow White' along with 'Aladdin', 'Mother Goose' and many other folk tales has proved to be a very popular with which European art form, often making great use of music, comedy and audience participation?

Answer: Pantomime

Pantomime is an art form that finds its modern roots in Great Britain, being developed there during the 18th and 19th centuries from theatrical forms dating back to as far as 16th century Italy and the Commedia dell'Arte. Pantomimes, or 'pantos' in short, are aimed specifically at family audiences and frequently make use of the services of popular celebrities of the time and those aging entertainers that still possess a degree of popularity and 'street cred'. Pantomimes feature a lot of cross-dressing, slapstick comedy, musical numbers and over-the-top acting and costumes with the younger members of the audience being positively encouraged by the cast to interact and make as much noise as possible. Pantos are usually held, in Great Britain at any case, during the period just before Christmas and into the New Year.

This bombastic performance was brought to you by SisterSeagull, who had no qualms pantomiming his work to the bepuzzled QMGers who worked out his meaning like an extreme game of Charades.
8. A character named Snow White appears in another of Grimm's 'Fairy Tales', this time in company with her sister Rose Red. There's a dwarf in this story, too, though not a cute sweet one - he's very much the bad guy. Who is the other main character in the story?

Answer: A bear

This is my favourite fairy tale to tell aloud, because really quite a lot happens in it. Briefly, Snow White and Rose Red, sisters who live with their mother deep in the forest, make friends with a bear who asks them for shelter on a cold winter night. The next summer, the girls have a variety of encounters with a very bad-tempered dwarf; they repeatedly rescue him from dangerous situations, only to be verbally abused and reviled by him. In their final encounter, he is being chased by an angry bear, and tries to bargain with the bear to eat the girls instead of him. The girls are terrified, but the bear (who turns out, of course, to be their own beloved friend bear) does not harm them, but kills the dwarf. At once he is turned into a handsome prince - he had been enchanted by the dwarf, who had also stolen his treasure, and was only freed when the dwarf was killed. The treasure is found, Snow White marries the bear/prince, Rose Red marries his conveniently-appearing brother, and they all - well, you know what they all do, ever after.

Agony contributed this question while looking out her window at a very snowy landscape indeed.
9. Performing as Jane Mast during her early years on the corner of vaudeville and Broadway, which 1930s queen of camp once said, "I used to be Snow White, but I drifted"?

Answer: Mae West

Born August 17, 1893, Mae West was far, far from the innocent that Snow White's character would have been, a fact West was proud of throughout her long life. Her now-famous Snow White quip was recorded by entertainment host and writer Ed Sullivan in 1938.

As evidenced by her famous use of double entendres, West was a carefree vamp, snubbing her nose at modern convention and increasing amounts of Hollywood censorship. In the midst of her entertainment reign, she used her stage name Jane Mast to write racy plays in which she was the producer and star. One such play resulted in her arrest for "corrupting the morals of youth". All this bad press made West's star shine even brighter as her career escalated for decades.

Brought to you by TemptressToo, who also used to be Snow White...but she drifted.
10. 'Snow White' was the unofficial name given to a dwarf planet way out on the edge of the solar system when it was discovered. Why is this nickname rather inappropriate?

Answer: It's known to be red in colour

Yes, taking a leaf from the other 'Snow White' fairy tale, perhaps 'Rose Red' would be more suitable....

Large Kuiper Belt Object 2007 OR10 (yes, you can see the need for a nickname) was discovered in 2007 by astronomers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Caltech's website explains that the object was so large and bright on the scanners that it was assumed by its discoverers to be bright white, most likely from a covering of water ice, leading to the nickname. Subsequent investigation confirmed the water ice but also the fact that Snow White is actually one of the reddest objects in the Solar System! Scientists suspect that the red colour is due to the remnants of a former methane atmosphere, which is escaping into space. Snow White may therefore have quite an interesting history which further research may unravel.

Solan_goose once caught a falling star and put it in his pocket. It took weeks to get the stains out, but it is back to snow white.
