Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the alter ego of comic book crime fighter Brenda Banks?

Answer: Lady Luck

Lady Luck first appeared in 1940 in Sunday editions of Register and Tribune Syndicate newspapers, based in Des Moines, Iowa and until its closure in 1956, she also appeared in Quality Comics. She has no supernatural abilities, but is a formidable martial arts expert and many of her crime solving adventures seemed to take place in the manganese mines owned by her father.
2. What is the name of the plane that flew one of the longest bombing missions of WWII when it went from Darwin, Australia to the island of Borneo, Indonesia?

Answer: Shady Lady

In February 1942, Japanese fighter planes attacked Darwin, Australia, causing more destruction than they had at Pearl Harbor. In taking the decision to strike back, the Australian air force decided to attack the oil refineries on Borneo, which supplied the Japanese forces with the majority of their aviation fuel and lubricating oils.
The mission, carried out by eight other Consolidated B-24 Liberator aircraft as well as "Shady Lady" was a success, but on the way back to base, a huge tropical storm blew "Shady Lady" way off course.
To stand any chance of returning home alive, the crew had to fly over a Japanese air force base in Timor, where they were intercepted but managed to fight off Japanese planes, before heading for Australia.
The plane was fast running out of fuel when First Lieutenant Doug Craig made the decision to crash land on the first patch of land they sighted, which was a saltpan near the coast of northern Australia.
The forced landing wrecked the nose wheel of the plane and caused much damage to the front of the plane, but all the crew were alive and back in Australia, 16 hours and 35 minutes after they had left.
Thanks to local Aborigines assisting the crew with repairs to the plane, "Shady Lady" was eventually able to take off again and return to Darwin just days before the wet season began, which would have flooded the saltpan.
For more on this aviation marvel, I would recommend watching the film, "Shady Lady" (2012).
3. One of, if not the best jazz vocalist ever, Billie Holiday was known by which nickname?

Answer: Lady Day

Holiday had an incredibly troubled life, beginning before she was even born when her mother was thrown out by her parents for being pregnant. By age nine, Holiday herself was up before juvenile court for truancy, and despite her amazing talent and the riches this brought her, her life never got any easier. By age 12, she was working in a brothel, running errands, and by age 18 she had her first hit, "Riffin' The Scotch" (1934), which she followed with many more, including "Summertime" (1936), "Carelessly" (1937) and "Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)" (1945). Sadly as the hits grew, so did her consumption of drugs and alcohol and in 1959, Holiday died, aged just 44, of pulmonary oedema and heart failure caused by cirrhosis of the liver.
4. The wife of the Liberal Democrats' defence spokesman in the House of Lords between 2004 and 2007 shares her title with a leading UK charitable organisation for gynaecological cancers. What would this be?

Answer: Lady Garden

Charity, the Lady Garden Foundation was founded in 2014 after it was shown that 41% of women were too embarrassed to go to the doctor about a gynaecological issue. As gynaecological cancers have an average mortality rate of 44%, they realised that something had to be done to encourage women to talk about their bodies, or as the charity themselves phrase it, "The more open we are about talking about our bodies, the more we will understand them. The more we understand them, the more likely we are to realise when something is wrong."
The charity website is https://www.ladygardenfoundation.com/ for more information.
Susan Garden was married to Air Marshal Timothy Garden, Baron Garden, until his death in 2007, shortly after which it was announced that a life peerage would be granted to her, allowing her to retain the title Lady Garden and sit in the House of Lords.
Lady Garden has been active in UK politics for many years and stood as a Liberal Democrat candidate in the Camden local elections in 2002 and was a Parliamentary candidate for Finchley and Golders Green in the 2005 general election but finished in third place 10,000 votes adrift of winner, Labour's Rudi Vis.
5. In the 2013 movie, "Machete Kills" from Robert Rodriguez, who played the part of gun-slinging assassin, La Chameleon?

Answer: Lady Gaga

"Machete Kills" (2013) was Lady Gaga's big screen debut and she attracted much praise for her skills, not least from producer and director, Robert Rodriguez.
This was his sequel to his 2010 movie, "Machete" and the third film based on a fake trailer in the 2007 double feature, "Grindhouse" which featured "Death Proof" from Quentin Tarantino and "Planet Terror" from Rodriguez.
6. Claudia Alta Taylor was born in Texas in 1912. By what name is she better known?

Answer: Lady Bird Johnson

While still an infant, Claudia's nursemaid remarked that she was as pretty as a ladybird, although it is believed that the maid, Alice Tittle was referring to a lady bird rather than a ladybird, as this insect is usually known as a ladybug in North America.
Whatever Ms Tittle meant, the name stuck and Claudia was known as Lady by her parents from then on, while her future husband, President Lyndon B. Johnson always called her Bird.
She is well remembered for the Highway Beautification Act which was signed into law in 1965 and was known as "Lady Bird's Bill"
7. A man about town in 1940s Czechoslovakia could be seen driving what?

Answer: Praga Lady

The Lady was a mid sized car built by Czech engineering giants Praga between 1935 and 1947. It replaced the Praga Piccolo and was very popular, but production was affected by WWII. Although a few hundred were made after the war, the company concentrated mainly on truck manufacturing post war and the Lady was the last car built by Praga until 2011, when they released their R4S race car for competition in the Benelux Supercar Challenge and the Britcar Endurance Championship.
8. One of the most beautiful ladies in this quiz is an American Cocker Spaniel from a 1955 Disney movie. Can you name her?

Answer: Lady

"Lady and the Tramp" (1955) concerned the adventures of Lady as she lived with Jim Dear and his wife Darling (voiced by jazz legend Peggy Lee). Jim and Darling have a baby, but they go on holiday leaving Aunt Sarah in charge of the house, the baby and Lady. This is made worse by the fact that Aunt Sarah hates dogs, and her cats, Si and Am hate dogs even more than she does.
Cue many mishaps, which lead to Lady meeting and falling for Tramp, as well as having an encounter with the dog catcher, but rest assured, in the best Disney tradition, there is a happy ending.
9. Which English noblewoman was known as the "Nine Days' Queen"?

Answer: Lady Jane Grey

Edward VI was the King of England and Ireland from 1547, aged nine until his death in 1553 aged 15. When he wrote his will, he named his cousin Jane as his successor in order to stop his half-sister Mary taking the crown, as she was Roman Catholic.
Edward died on July 6th 1553, and Jane was proclaimed queen four days later. While she was at the Tower of London, awaiting her coronation, public support for Mary grew and the advisers to the monarch, the Privy Council, switched sides and started supporting Mary too.
Lady Jane was convicted of high treason and held prisoner in the tower where she had awaited her coronation before being executed in February 1554.
10. Which Ecuadorian-American artist is known as "first lady of graffiti"?

Answer: Lady Pink

Lady Pink, real name Sandra Fabara, showed that graffiti art is not just a male domain when she began painting New York subway trains in the late 1970s. She formed the all female graffiti crew Ladies of the Arts in 1980, the same year that she was honoured by being included in the show "GAS: Graffiti Art Success" at Fashion Moda in New York.
Her graffiti has been included in shows in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Museum in New York City, and the Groningen Museum in the Netherlands.
