Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Her nickname of Ginger Spice testifies to the fact that she is a redhead, but which of the Spice Girls is this?

Answer: Geri Halliwell

Geri Halliwell began her road to global recognition when she teamed up with Mel C (Sporty Spice), Victoria Adams (Posh Spice), Mel B (Scary Spice) and Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) to form the phenomenon that was the Spice Girls.

Halliwell was known for using the "girl power" phrase while with the band, and is remembered for her Union Jack dress which she wore at the 1997 Brit awards, where the girls performed their mega hit of the previous year, "Wannabe" (1996).

In 1998, Halliwell became the first member of the band to leave and embarked on a solo career, which brought her eight UK top ten hits, including four number ones before the band reunited in 2007.
2. "Well I don't care how many girls you've dated, man, But you ain't lived till you've had your tires rotated, By a red headed woman, A red headed woman, It takes a red headed woman, To get a dirty job done." are lyrics from "Red Headed Woman" (1992) by which global superstar and husband to a redhead?

Answer: Bruce Springsteen

"Red Headed Woman" (1992) which was first released om Springsteen's "In Concert/MTV Plugged" album of the same year is about Patti Scialfa, whom he married in 1991.

Scialfa has been a backing vocalist and guitarist in Springsteen's E Street Band since 1984, and has also appeared on albums by the Rolling Stones, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and Keith Richards as well as releasing solo albums.

In 2019, Springsteen described his album and concert film of that year, "Western Stars" as his love letter to his wife of almost 30 years, with the tracks on the album being about their love and the concert performances in the movie being interspersed with spoken dialogue from Bruce as well as honeymoon footage of the couple.
3. One of the sexiest redheads of all time is Jessica Rabbit, famed for her line in the film, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" (1988), "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way." Which actress provided the voice for Jessica Rabbit?

Answer: Kathleen Turner

Kathleen Turner provided the sultry voice to go with Jessica Rabbit's smoking body, but was not credited in the movie as she insisted on playing the part as a favour to director Robert Zemeckis, with whom she had previously worked on the 1984 movie, "Romancing The Stone".

Turner was Oscar nominated in 1987 for her role in "Peggy Sue Got Married" (1986), losing out to Marlee Matlin in "Children Of A Lesser God" (1986) and has won two Golden Globes, for her roles in "Romancing The Stone" and "Prizzi's Honor" (1985).
Neither Turner, nor Amy Irving who provided the singing voice for Jessica Rabbit, are redheads.
4. With a name like Ginger, you have to be a redhead, so who played Ginger Grant on TV show, "Gilligan's Island" from 1964 to 1967?

Answer: Tina Louise

In 1958, the same year that she made her movie debut, the National Art Council named Tina Louise as the "World's Most Beautiful Redhead", and while she did star in several films, such as "Armored Command" (1961) opposite Howard Keel and "Day Of The Outlaw" (1959) with Burl Ives, she found most of her early success in Broadway stage productions. In 1964, however, she left the Broadway production of "Fade Out - Fade In" to take the role of Ginger in "Gilligan's Island" after Jayne Mansfield had refused it, and she became a household name, although due to concerns over being typecast, she refused to be a part of the three "Gilligan's Island" movies that were made after the TV show ended, instead concentrating on more serious movie parts in films such as "The Happy Ending" (1969) and "The Stepford Wives" (1975).

Dawn Wells also starred in "Gilligan's Island", playing Mary Ann Summers, while Hope Summers and June Lockhart were also big 60s stars, Summers being best remembered for her roles on "The Andy Griffith Show" (1961-1968) and in the movie, "Rosemary's Baby" (1968) and Lockhart for starring in TV shows, "Lost In Space" (1965-1968) and "Petticoat Junction" (1968-1970), although she would also go on to have roles in "General Hospital" in the 80s, "Beverly Hills 90210" in the 90s and "Grey's Anatomy" in the 00s.
5. Making her debut in 1985, which video game redhead is an international thief and the main focus of ACME Detective Agency as she travels the world eluding them?

Answer: Carmen Sandiego

"Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?" (1985) spawned a whole series of video games which became a valuable geography learning tool for kids of the 90s and beyond, while making education fun.

Carmen's crimes, often committed while wearing her trademark red fedora and trenchcoat include stealing the fish from half of Lake Titicaca, the best coffee and the game winning puck from the first Stanley Cup.

It should be mentioned also that Carmen's hair colour has changed through the series, from red to black to brown, but for the purposes of this quiz, we are concentrating on redhead Carmen.
6. "Once in his life, every man is entitled to fall madly in love with a gorgeous redhead", is a quote from which gorgeous (dyed) redhead?

Answer: Lucille Ball

Model, singer, Broadway actress, film actress and TV star. Lucille Ball had it all, not to mention her stunning looks and incredible red hair.

"I Love Lucy" ran from 1951 to 1957 and in four of its six seasons, topped the Nielsen ratings in USA for viewing figures. This was followed by "The Lucy Show" (1962-1968), for which she won two Emmy awards, "Here's Lucy" (1968-1974) and "Life With Lucy" (1986).

Well ahead of her time, Ball became the first woman to run a major television studio, when in 1962, she took over Desilu, the company founded by her and her first husband, Desi Arnaz, following their divorce.
7. "And I've seen you on the corners and cafes, it seems, Red hair and black leather, my favourite colour scheme" sang which folk musician in his song, "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" (1991)?

Answer: Richard Thompson

The song from Thompsons 1991 album, "Rumor and Sigh", is a personal favourite of mine and tells the tale of James, a career criminal and his love for Red Molly, matched only by his love for his motorcycle, to which he hands her the keys as he lays on his deathbed following a shotgun shooting during an armed robbery.

The song has been both praised and covered by many artists, but none more special than Bob Dylan who has performed it in live shows.
8. Which redhead legend of cinema was called Red by her co star Cary Grant in the movie "The Philadelphia Story" (1940)?

Answer: Katharine Hepburn

Hepburn's character in the movie was actually called Tracy Lord, but in both the original 1939 play by Philip Barry and the 1940 film adaptation, she is referred to by Dexter Havan as Red.

Hepburn was surely one of Hollywood's greatest stars, and her fondness for privacy only heightened the aura of stardom. She was the actress about whom critic Dorothy Parker once said, she "ran the gamut of emotions from A to B", was never far from scandal for supposedly "un-American" activities or daring to wear trousers in public. She had affairs with married men and was often "accused" of being bi sexual or lesbian, she wasn't conventionally beautiful, yet she was one of the most desired actresses ever.

Sadly Hepburn died in 2003, aged 96 and I think that president George W. Bush got it right when he said that she "will be remembered as one of the nation's artistic treasures".
9. Since 1977, the Little Red-Haired Girl has been the unrequited love of which comic strip character?

Answer: Charlie Brown

Although never seen in the "Peanuts" comic strips by Charles M. Schulz, the Little Red-Haired Girl does appear in TV shows based on the strip, where her name is revealed to be Heather Wold.

Every Valentine's Day, almost without fail, Charlie Brown decides to finally buy her a gift to express his feelings for her, but every Valentine's Day, without fail, his courage fails at the last minute and the Little Red-Haired Girl is unaware of his feelings. Poor Charlie Brown.
10. Which Australian redhead, born in Hawaii was Oscar nominated for her portrayal of Satine in the movie "Moulin Rouge!" (2001)?

Answer: Nicole Kidman

Although Kidman seems to be blonde in most of her films, her natural red hair is evident in movies such as "Moulin Rouge!" (2001) and "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999) in which she starred with her then husband, Tom Cruise.

Kidman won an Oscar for her portrayal of writer Virginia Woolf in "The Hours" (2002) and apart from "Moulin Rouge!" was also nominated for her roles in "Rabbit Hole" (2010) and "Lion" (2016).

In 2002, Kidman was the cover star on "People" magazine's "most beautiful" edition and when friend Naomi Watts complimented her, saying, "Her skin is like a perfect china cup", Kidman offered advice to beautiful redheads everywhere, saying, "I wear a lot of sunscreen, and I never go in the sun."
