Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What would you be most likely to find in the Fisherman's Ring?

Answer: The Pope's Finger

The Fisherman's Ring is a signet ring which was used by popes to seal official documents, though since the mid 19th century has been used purely as a decorative symbol of the popes official regalia. The ring depicts the first Pope, Saint Peter, in a fishing boat and a new ring is made for each pope, with their papal name surrounding the design. Upon a pope's death or abdication, the ring used to be destroyed with hammers to prevent "lost" fake documents being circulated but nowadays, the design only is ruined with chisels and the ring itself remains intact.
2. Who originally recorded the song "Ring of Fire"?

Answer: Anita Carter

"Ring of Fire" was co-written by June Carter, later to become June Carter Cash when she married Johnny and was originally recorded by her sister Anita on her 1963 album "Folk Songs Old and New" as "(Love's) Ring Of Fire". Cash allegedly heard the track and told Anita that if she had no success with it after a few months, he would record it as he interpreted the song.

This he did, adding mariachi horns and scored a top 20 hit on the Billboard charts as well as creating a song association that would remain even after his death.
3. In which country would you find Formula One venue, the Red Bull Ring?

Answer: Austria

Located at Spielberg, Austria, the Red Bull Ring is the third incarnation of this circuit which was built in 1969 to replace the Zeltweg circuit. Red Bull Ring was originally called Osterreichring and hosted F1 Grand Prix from 1970 to 1987, when increasing safety concerns forced the track to be removed from the calendar. By 1996 the track had been completely rebuilt, much shorter than the original and without the dangerous sweeping bends, renamed the A1 ring as most of the investment in the track rebuild came from cell phone company A1.

This incarnation hosted the F1 event from 1997 to 2003, when it became unusable through lack of investment and fell into disrepair before being bought by the founder of Red Bull, Dietrich Mateschitz. After a 70m reconstruction, the track was renamed Red Bull Ring and reopened in 2011, hosting its first F1 Grand Prix in 2014.
4. In which 2002 Gore Verbinski directed movie did Naomi Watts play a journalist?

Answer: The Ring

"The Ring" (2002) is a classic example of a "remake based upon a" movie that Hollywood does so well. It is a remake of the classic Japanese horror movie "Ring" (1998) which was based upon the novel "Ring" by Koji Suzuki. The Hollywood remake was so successful it lead to remakes of many other classic Asian horrors such as "The Grudge" (2004) a remake of "Ju-on: The Grudge" (2002) and "The Uninvited" (2009) which was a remake of "A Tale of Two Sisters" (2003).
5. Which video game character first started collecting gold rings in 1991?

Answer: Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic first appeared as a game for the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis in USA) and has been collecting those gold rings with the help of buddies such as yellow fox, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna and his girlfriend Amy Rose ever since. Sonic games are now available for a variety of systems, such as Wii, PlayStation, Microsoft Windows and Xbox, but he still hasn't managed to defeat Dr. Robotnik once and for all.
6. Who composed "Der Ring des Nibelungen" commonly referred to as "The Ring Cycle"?

Answer: Richard Wagner

"The Ring Cycle" took Wagner almost 30 years to complete and is made up of four parts; Das Rheingold (The Rhinegold), Die Walkure (The Valkyrie), Siegfried and Gotterdammerung (Twilight of the Gods). It is normally performed as one piece over four nights, although individual sections have occasionally been performed as stand alone pieces.

When performed together, as Wagner intended, the four pieces take almost 16 hours to complete.
7. According to legend, fairy rings are created by fairies dancing, but what grows in their footprints to make the ring?

Answer: Mushrooms

There are many myths and legends regarding fairy rings many of which seem to originate in Western Europe and depending on the myth they can either be beneficial to mortals or the polar opposite. They are mentioned in works by Shakespeare, Thomas Hardy, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and W.B. Yeats among others.
8. At the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, host Russell Brand made fun of which band for wearing purity rings?

Answer: Jonas Brothers

Purity rings are worn to show a promise to God and the wearer to remain a virgin until marriage, and were hugely popular in the 1990s. Other celebrity wearers apart from the Jonas Brothers included Miley Cyrus who at age 16 described herself as "the girl that no one can get" but by age 20 she had ditched the ring and was calling sex "a beautiful and magical thing" and Selena Gomez who started wearing a purity ring aged 13, but stopped wearing it when she started dating Justin Bieber aged 18.

Thanks to Huff Post for the Miley quotes.
9. The scientific name for dating tree rings to determine the age of a tree is what?

Answer: Dendrochronology

In his "Treatise on Painting" (1651), Leonardo da Vinci was one of the first people to mention the importance of annual tree rings, but it wasn't until the late 19th century that dendrochronology was popularized by Jacob Kuechler studying Texan oak trees.

The practice is hugely beneficial to art historians who use it to date panel paintings which were a forerunner to canvas art. As for the other possible answers, melissopalynology is a study of honey and pollen, pogonology is a study of beards and "morbi celeritate" is Latin for speed dating.
10. Which Dutch gymnast is known as Lord of the Rings due to his mastery of the discipline in artistic gymnastics?

Answer: Yuri van Gelder

van Gelder was an incredibly talented gymnast, but sadly had a self destruct button primed and ready to go as is evidenced by his fame and notoriety. Career highlights include gold at the 2005 European Championships, world champion at the 2005 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, bronze medal at the 2006 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, silver at the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships and qualifying for the final of the 2016 Olympic Games. Lowlights include being suspended from the Dutch Gymnastics Union for taking cocaine three days before the national championships in 2009, being dismissed from the Dutch military for the same offence, pulling out of the 2010 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, days before the start for "personal reasons" and refusing to answer journalist's questions about drugs and being sent home from the 2016 Olympics, before he could compete in the final for violating team rules concerning alcohol consumption and leaving the team base.
