Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Governor of Michigan had a name that you may think is written backwards. What was his full name?

Answer: Stevens T. Mason

Stevens T. Mason was only 23 when he became the first Governor of Michigan. I made up the other 3 names.
2. Michigan is called by many nicknames. What is the official state nickname of Michigan?

Answer: Great Lakes State

Although you may hear Michigan called any of these nicknames, the "Great Lakes State" is its official nickname. It is used on Michigan's license plates and can be found on the Michigan state quarter.
3. The automotive industry is a huge part of Detroit's history, so it's no wonder that Detroit is the home of the first mile of concrete-paved road. Which road in Detroit was first?

Answer: Woodward Avenue (M-1)

Woodward Avenue, also known as Michigan-1, was indeed the first mile of concrete-paved road ever. Woodward Avenue was established in 1815 by Native Americans as their primary transportation path (it was known as the Saginaw Trail then) and was converted to a plank road in the 1820's for use by wagons.

In 1909, the mile between 6 Mile Road and 7 Mile Road became the first mile of concrete-paved road in the world for use by the automobile.
4. Michigan is bordered by four of the five "Great Lakes". Which Great Lake does not border the state of Michigan?

Answer: Lake Ontario

Lake Ontario is the only Great Lake that does not border Michigan. Lake Erie and Lake Huron border Michigan on the east (separated by Lake St. Clair) and Lake Superior lies north of Michigan's upper peninsula. Lake Michigan is to the west of Michigan.
5. While in Michigan, you are never more than _______ miles from one of the Great Lakes. How many miles, roughly?

Answer: 85

You're never more than two hours from a Great Lake (unless you're driving slow while looking at the scenery).
6. Michigan's largest city, Detroit, has had many firsts. Which of the following did NOT happen first in Detroit?

Answer: First city to build a bridge across the Great Lakes

Believe it or not, Detroit does not border any of the Great Lakes. It borders Lake St. Clair on the Northeast and the Detroit River on the southeast. The Ambassador Bridge crosses into Ontario, Canada over the Detroit River. Detroit is the home of the first 4-way traffic light, the first city with phone numbers, and of course, Henry Ford invented the assembly line in Detroit.
7. Which of the following is NOT a national park in Michigan?

Answer: Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge

The Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge might be like a national park to the animals (especially the Canada Goose), but it's not one of Michigan's 5 national parks. They are Isle Royale, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Keweenaw National Historic Park, and River Raisin National Battlefield where over 300 Americans were killed on January 22, 1813 during the War of 1812.
8. Michigan comes from the Ojibwa word mishigamaa. What does mishigamaa mean?

Answer: Large water or large lake

The Ojibwa probably weren't aware that Michigan was shaped like a mitten.
9. Michigan is the home of many corporations. Which of the following is Michigan NOT the home of?

Answer: Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company

Gibson Guitar was founded in Kalamazoo in 1902, Ford Motor Company in Detroit in 1903, and the Kellogg Company (known as the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company) in 1906. The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company was founded in Akron, Ohio in 1898. They produced bicycle and carriage tires.
10. Michigan's motto is "Si quaeris penninsulam amoenam circumspice". What does this mean?

Answer: If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you

Michigan is comprised of an upper and lower peninsula (the only US state made up of two peninsulas), so, if you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you.
