Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is the only place in Europe to be home to macaques?

Answer: Gibraltar

These gorgeous macaques can be found on the famed Rock of Gibraltar and are called the Barbary Apes. Actually they look much more like a very large monkey---and not much like an ape.
2. Paul Revere, the great Boston silversmith, was made famous by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's lengthy poem, "The Midnight Ride". How did he continue to assist during the Revolutionary War?

Answer: He rode as a messenger

His famous ride on April 18, 1775 was with William Dawes. On this particular ride he raced to Lexington to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that they were about to be arrested. Then he went on to Concord to warn the people to hide their weapons. Two days later he rode again to alert the countryside towns of the arrival of the British.
3. What is the Fujita scale used to measure?

Answer: Tornadoes

The Fujita scale measures the intensity of a tornado. It ranges from Category F0 which is 40-72 mph and can cause broken tree branches and damaged chimneys to Category F6 which is from 319-379 mph . This horrendous storm can lift strong frame houses off their foundations and pieces of debris as large as a car can fly through the air more than 100 yards.
4. What was the first tune written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney to appear on the "US Billboard" top 100 pop charts in June, 1963?

Answer: "From Me to You"

"From Me to You", written by Lennon & McCartney was recorded by Del Shannon. This was a half a year before the Beatles cut loose with their "I Want to Hold Your Hand" which became their first US top 100 Billboard tune in January, 1964.
5. Ronald Reagan loved his "Jelly Belly" candies. Blackberry is not included in the flavors.

Answer: true

The official flavors number 40. The are made by the Herman Goelitz Company of Fairfield, California. While they do have A & W root beer and cream soda flavors---even buttered popcorn and toasted marshmallow, somebody dropped the ball and didn't include my favorite flavor. I might have even been satisfied with loganberry---but no.
6. If you have a deficiency of the Vitamin C, what condition or disease might you get?

Answer: Scurvy

This was just too easy! Good old ascorbic acid. The British used to carry citrus on their ships to ward off scurvy and they picked up the nickname "limies"....or would that be "limeys"?
7. What was the man's name that wandered the countryside with a horse-load of apple seeds?

Answer: John Chapman

His nickname was "Johnny Appleseed" and he was born in 1774 and died in 1845. The first reliable source of Johnny was in Ohio in 1801 where he planted many apple trees along the side of "Licking Creek". It is documented that he transported apple seeds on two canoes lashed together to plant his orchards on the westernmost part of the frontier.

It was said that he was known in every log-cabin from the Ohio River to the Great Lakes.
8. What is the primary way that fish obtain water?

Answer: Osmosis

While some do drink water, the primary way is through osmosis. Osmosis, simply put, is the movement of a fluid through a semi-permeable membrane----the fish's skin---until the concentration of the fluid inside is the same as outside. If the fish is a salt water fish, osmosis continually draws the fresh water out of the fish causing the fish to continually replenish its body fluid.
9. Who was known as the "King of the Keelboat Men"?

Answer: Mike Fink

Mike was born in 1770, became an Indian scout and later a boatman. His boasting made him a legend but history tells us that he was a bully and basically a cruel person. In today's time, he would be locked up for domestic violence because of how he treated his wife.
10. What was the announcement that was always made at the end of an Elvis Presley concert?

Answer: Elvis has left the building

This was announced to encourage the audience to leave by the proper exits. Because of his incredible popularity, many of the audience tried to get backstage to see the "King" and this could not be tolerated. Stars of his magnitude always face danger from their fans.
