Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1938 film "Bringing Up Baby" starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, what type of animal is referred to in the title as "Baby"?

Answer: Leopard

Katharine Hepburn's character Susan Vance unexpectedly finds herself tending to a small tamed leopard called Baby, shipped to her from Brazil thanks to her brother Mark. Susan uses the pet leopard to gain the attention of Cary Grant's character, Dr. David Huxley.
2. "If music be the food of love, play on", uttered by the character Orsino, is the opening line of which Shakespeare play?

Answer: Twelfth Night

"Twelfth Night" is one of Shakespeare's comedy plays and is subtitled "What You Will". Much of the comedy is generated by characters disguising themselves as the opposite sex and finding themselves entangled in absurd love plots. For example, Viola, disguised as a boy, carries out love-errands on behalf of Olivia.

However, Olivia finds herself in love with Viola's character but mistakenly betroths herself to her twin brother Sebastian. This complicated, yet intriguing, plot is but one of many love related subplots, all of which are equally absurd in nature.
3. Where and when were the inaugural Paralympic Games held?

Answer: Rome, 1960

At the first Paralympic Games in Rome, only athletes in wheelchairs competed. However, the Paralympics have since expanded to the point that athletes with visual impairments, various physical disabilities, cerebral palsy and other disability categories have the opportunity to represent their country and to do battle for gold.

The Paralympic Games are well worth a watch, and the skills exhibited by these athletes, in spite of their respective disabilities, are truly awe inspiring. The Paralympic Winter Games were first held in 1976 in Ornskoldsvik in Sweden.
4. Which country joined with Egypt in the 1950s to form the United Arab Republic until the union disbanded in 1961?

5. Which French writer and philosopher was born in Algeria in 1913 and became a French Resistance activist during World War II?

Answer: Albert Camus

Jean-Paul Sartre was born in France in 1905 and he was also involved in the French struggle during World War II and became a P.O.W. in 1941. Auguste Comte was born much earlier in Montpellier in 1798, and Michel Foucault was born in Poitiers, France in 1926.

Charles de Gaulle served as the first President of the Fifth French Republic from 1959-1969 and he was succeeded by Georges Pompidou, who in turn was replaced by Giscard d'Estaing in 1974. Francois Mitterand served as President of France from 1981-1995.

Incidentally, the Fifth Republic was set up due to a weak parliamentary government serving in the Fourth Republic which culminated in a crisis in Algeria, resulting in the subsequent independence of the North-African country after a military struggle.
8. Which female music artist released the album "The Best Damn Thing" in 2007?

Answer: Avril Lavigne

9. Which of the following minority sports is a lawn game where the objective is to knock over wooden blocks by throwing wooden sticks at them?

Answer: Kubb

Kubb originated in the Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, where the game is still relatively popular. The objective of the game is to knock over all of the opponent's wooden pieces, called kubbs, after which the game can be won by toppling the opponent's king piece.

However, the king piece must not be knocked over before toppling all of the opponent's kubbs, the direct consequence of this being losing the match.
10. Although affectionately known as "Ladybird", what was the actual first name of the wife of former US President Lyndon B. Johnson?

Answer: Claudia

"Ladybird" Johnson was born Claudia Alta Taylor in Texas, 1912. "Ladybird" became her nickname at an early age due to a nurse maid comparing her beauty to that of a ladybird.
