Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following was not a former flavour of Jell-O that flopped?

Answer: Bubblegum

Frankly, I can't believe anybody thought these would be well-received. The vegetable flavours were added to the Jell-O lineup in the 1950s due to the popularity of lime Jell-O and congealed salads. Other odd flavours of the past include chocolate gelatin and Italian (I'm not even sure what that would taste like). Fun fact: Jell-O was named the state snack of Utah in 2001.
2. What is the "Mr. Clean" household cleaner known as in the United Kingdom?

Answer: Flash

"Mr. Clean" was introduced by Procter & Gamble in 1958. In most of mainland Europe, it is known as "Mr. Proper", but the name was changed to "Flash" in the UK to avoid confusion with existing products called "Mr. Sheen" and "Mr. Muscle".
3. What is Robert Baden-Powell's claim to fame?

Answer: founded the Boy Scouts

Lt. General Robert Baden-Powell held the first Scout camp in 1907 in South England. Soon after, the movement spread to the United States because of the desirable ideals promoted by the Scouts, including self-esteem, citizenship, and outdoorsmanship. W.D. Boyce, from Chicago, learned of the Scouts on a visit to England, and in 1910 established the Boy Scouts of America.
4. Betty Boop has been a widely recognized character for decades. But she went through a drastic change two years after her creation. What was the original Betty Boop?

Answer: a poodle

Grim Natwick created the character as a French poodle, following the popular style of making cartoon characters animals. In 1932, he decided to make her recognizably human and changed her fur into a bob haircut and her ears into large earrings. It was also in 1932 that she came to be officially named Betty Boop.
5. Which is NOT the name of a modern tarot card?

Answer: The Jester

A modern tarot card deck consists of 78 cards, divided into two parts. The "major arcana" ("greater secrets"), also known as the trump cards, has 21 main cards given different names such as The Emperor, The Hanged Man, and The Sun, as well as a 22nd card referred to as The Fool.

The "minor arcana" ("lesser secrets") contains the remaining 56 cards and are very much like regular playing cards: there are four suits, each consisting of 14 cards each: ten numbered cards, a page, a knight, a queen, and a king.
6. Where is the Bata Shoe Museum located?

Answer: Toronto, Canada

Though Thomas Bata, the one-time CEO of Bata Shoe Company was born in what is now the Czech Republic, his wife Sonja Bata founded the shoe museum in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The museum was established in 1995. The building, located on the corner of Bloor and St. George streets, is designed to look like a slightly opened shoe box.
7. The first signs of a lottery trace back to when?

Answer: about 200 B.C.

Evidence shows proof of a lottery that traces back to the Han Dynasty in China, sometime between 205 and 187 B.C. Archaeologists discovered ancient Keno-like game slips in the area. In Europe, raffle-like lotteries were popular during the time of the Roman Empire and money lotteries were started in the 1500s.

The first lottery in the United States was held to help finance the American Revolution.
8. Someone who is a ctenophile loves what?

Answer: Combs

"Cteno" comes the Greek word for "comb", combined with "-phile", the suffix meaning "lover of". "Cteno" is a common prefix for types of sea creatures, such as ctenophora (similar to jellyfish) and ctenopoma (African labyrinth fish).
9. The maple leaf is generally considered a Canadian symbol, but there is a city in the United States nicknamed "America's Maple Leaf City". What state is it located in?

Answer: Missouri

The city is Carthage, located in Jasper County. At the time of 2000 census, its population was around 12,000. It is called "America's Maple Leaf City" because of the many maple trees that grow in town. The city holds an annual Maple Leaf Festival in October when the leaves change colour, which draws many visitors from all over the county and beyond.
10. What was the name of the former mascot for Scotch tape?

Answer: Scotty McTape

Scotty McTape was cartoon character who wore a kilt. He was introduced in 1944 and remained the mascot for about two decades. He starred in a television spot called "Scotty McTape at the North Pole" which debuted in 1955, in which he rode a dog-pulled 'sleigh' (the sleigh was a roll of tape).
