Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gloucestershire is a beautiful county; from the rolling Cotswold Hills across the lower Severn Valley to The Forest of Dean there is splendid countryside to be seen all about. What does the term Gloucestershire Old Spot refer to?

Answer: A breed of pig

The Gloucestershire Old Spot breed of pig is a magnificently ugly beast. It is usually cream with variable amounts of black spots and patches spread across its body. At one time the breed was becoming very rare but has become more popular in recent years. For more info visit http://www.oldspots.org.uk/
2. Derbyshire is another wonderful county; towering high peaks overlooking steep river valleys and acres of high moorland. No surprise that England's first National Park is situated here. Who or what is Sage Derby?

Answer: A type of green cheese

Sage Derby is a green cheese which can only be obtained at full moon by secret cheese-miners near Buxton! Not really, the cheese is given its green colour because quantities of sage are added to the curds during processing.
3. Lancashire is another marvellous county much renowned for its delicious Lancashire hot-pot. Do you know what a Lancashire Heeler is?

Answer: A type of dog

The Lancashire Heeler is a rare breed of dog which was originally used for herding cattle. Its appearance is somewhat like a corgi. Most heelers are black and tan but liver and tan is another colour as well.
4. Another lovely county is Worcestershire with the tranquil Vale of Evesham looking west to the Malvern Hills. There is also the world famous Worcestershire Sauce of course but what is a Worcester Pearmain?

Answer: A type of apple

The Worcester Pearmain is an early season apple which was indeed first cultivated in Worcestershire in the mid-nineteenth century. They are popular apples both with professional growers and with gardeners. The flavour is said by some to have a slight strawberry tang but I must say I have never detected it.
5. Rutland has the distinction of being England's smallest county. What is Rutland Water?

Answer: A large reservoir

Rutland Water was created in the early 'seventies and is the largest reservoir (by area) in England; it opened in 1976. Rutland Water quickly became an important site for wildfowl etc and there is also a successful programme for breeding ospreys.
6. Kent has some beautiful countryside and is known as the 'Garden of England'. 'Duke of Kent' is cockney rhyming slang for rent and Kent cigarettes were among the first brands to have a filter-tip. What is a Kentish Plover?

Answer: A small wading bird

The Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) was first identified around Sandwich Bay in Kent. Unfortunately it was never a common species in Britain and stopped breeding regularly in the late twentieth century. It occurs as a passage migrant in Britain but its range extends throughout southern parts of Asia, Europe and North America.
7. Cornwall has some of the most dramatic coastline scenery in England coupled with some fantastic beaches. Cornish pasties are known and loved by many people but what is the Cornish Rex?

Answer: A breed of cat

The Cornish Rex is a peculiar breed of cat which only has one layer of fur; most breeds have three distinct layers. Their coat is reported as being the softest of any breed and they are far more suited to a life indoors rather than outside.
8. Cheshire is lovely county on the border with Wales. It is famous for its oak trees, its cheese and erm ... its disappearing cats ("Alice in Wonderland"). What is the Cheshire Gap?

Answer: A topographical feature which lies between the Welsh mountains and The Pennines

Cheshire is a fairly flat county which lies between the mountains of North Wales and the high hills of The Pennines in Lancashire and Derbyshire. This low-lying land allows north-westerly frontal systems through to the midland counties and meteorologists make much of the Cheshire Gap in their weather forecasts.
9. Suffolk is a beautiful county in East Anglia made famous by the paintings of John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough and by Felixstowe - one of the largest container ports in Europe. What is a Suffolk Punch?

Answer: A breed of horse

The Suffolk Punch is a large breed of draft horse. It is always chestnut coloured and is usually measures between 15.3 to 16.1 hands high. The Suffolk Punch's history dates back over five hundred years and was originally used to pull the large ploughs needed to till the heavy Suffolk soils.
10. Finally to the splendid scenery of Yorkshire, original home of Yorkshire terriers, Yorkshire puddings and Monty Python's "The Four Yorkshiremen". However what is Yorkshire Fog?

Answer: A type of grass

Yorkshire Fog (Holcus lanatus) is a type of grass. It is found in Yorkshire but is not exclusive to the county. Yorkshire Fog is usually indicative of poor soils and is not particularly nutritious for grazing livestock.
