Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although the United States Constitution allows people as young as 35 to be president, many presidents are much older than that. Which president, just shy of his 47th birthday, was the youngest one elected in the 19th century?

Answer: Ulysses S. Grant

Grant was president during the time of reconstruction, when the Southern United States was being rebuilt after getting destroyed in the Civil War. After his presidency, he lived a quiet life in upstate New York, where he died in 1885.
2. Not many places can say that nobody is from there, but Emilio Marcos Palma can be happy knowing that he was the first person born in Antarctica. Where on Antarctica was he born?

Answer: The Antarctic Peninsula

Because Palma's parents were Argentinean, he took Argentinean citizenship. Palma was born in Esperanza base after his mother was taken there while pregnant so that Argentina could claim part of Antarctica. Had he chosen to, he could have gained British overseas citizenship, as he was born in a part of Antarctica that Britain also claimed. However, he chose not to.
3. Circumnavigating the world is no easy task. What country was the first to get to work and do it by plane in 1924?

Answer: United States

Many countries at the time had been considering the idea of an aerial circumnavigation. The British had previously made a failed attempt in 1922. Four planes in total were used. The world would not be circumnavigated again by plane until 1929, when two Australian men managed to complete the task, as well as a German pilot doing a separate solo adventure.

Answer: Germany

Germany had only existed in a united form since the reign of Otto Von Bismarck. It surged however, and despite a bad human rights record, became a major world power by the turn of the 20th century. After its loss in World War One, Germany would lose many of its former colonies. The power in these colonies would be transferred to countries such as France and Britain.
5. The 2014 World Cup showed controversy, excitement, and triumph. Who was the youngest person to participate in this grand showdown?

Answer: Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw was only 18 years old when the World Cup began; however he turned 19 during the tournament. He played for the English team, who was eliminated from the round robin stage with two losses and a draw. He was transferred on a 30 million pound contract to Manchester United in 2014.
6. What language was the New Testament originally written in?

Answer: Greek

It eventually debuted on the September 6 chart in the top position, being Taylor Swift's second single to do so after "We are Never Ever Getting Back Together," After its debut, it would spend 3 more intermittent weeks in the number one position, and finish in spot number 13 on the 2014 year end singles chart.
8. In 1982, John Huxley was forced to manufacture new equipment for what casino game after players were found taking advantage of it?

Answer: Roulette

John Huxley, a British company, discovered that several Americans were winning big at casinos by discovering which numbers were more likely to come up than others. They made a new wheel with shallower pockets that made the ball equally likely to fall in any slot, and after another player won big in Atlantic City, the new wheel became the standard for casinos worldwide.
9. Which one of these "New" US States was the first one admitted to the union?

Answer: New Jersey

New Jersey ratified the Constitution in 1787 and became the third state to enter the United States, after Delaware and Pennsylvania. New Hampshire was the ninth to join, entering in June 1788. New York was one of the last of the 13 colonies to join the United States, joining in July of 1788. Over a century later, New Mexico would join, in 1912.
10. Which one of these species was not newly discovered in 2013?

Answer: Pinta Island tortoise
