Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Garuda is the national airline of which of the following countries?

Answer: Indonesia

The airline's full name is PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, but it trades as Garuda Indonesia. Headquartered at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangeran, the airline commenced in January of 1947 and used the name Indonesian Airways. It is the country's second largest airline behind Lion Air. It adopted the Garuda name, also the national symbol of Indonesia, during the 1960s and, at the same time adopted a red and white livery to be in line with the country's national colours.

This question flew in from the pen of Phoenix Rising's pollucci19.
2. The "fengguan", a headgear worn by noblewomen in ancient China, is often decorated with filigreed ornaments inlaid with a rare blue material in an artform known as "diancui". What is this blue material?

Answer: Kingfisher feathers

The art of "diancui' dates back 2500 years. Blue kingfisher feathers are inlaid on intricate gold or silver pieces that adorn hairpieces and other objects of fine art. Photonic crystals on the bird's feathers bend and reflect light, and this creates the highly prized iridescent colour. Kingfisher feathers were a luxury item reserved for nobility and royalty. So great was the demand for kingfisher feathers that the bird was hunted nearly to extinction. The art of "diancui" has largely been discontinued since the Chinese Revolution and there are very few artisans nowadays who can craft it.

The "fengguan", formerly worn by noblewomen such as empresses, is today more commonly seen as a component of the traditional Chinese bridal costume. Instead of kingfisher feathers, alternative materials such as enamel are used to re-produce "diancui".

This question was crafted by Phoneix Rising team member purelyqing.
3. In the Marvel Comics universe, Jean Grey is one of the founding members of the "X-Men". Which of the following is her primary power?

Answer: Telekinesis

The "X-Men" franchise was launched by its creators, Stan Lee & Jack Kirby, in 1963. There were five original members with Jean Grey (as Marvel Girl) its only female member. She was born with her powers, telekinesis and telepathy and, during the course of the franchise has been faced with a number of deaths. Despite having a caring nature, one of her future re-incarnations is as "Dark Phoenix", who has been rated by IGN Entertainment as the ninth best villain in their 2011 list of the "Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time".

In film she has been portrayed by Famke Jansen in five instalments of the "X-Men" films, by Sophie Turner in the 2016 film "X-Men: Apocalypse" and, again, in "Dark Phoenix" (2019). (NOTE) Jean has been shown in flight in both comic book and film, however, this is not her "primary" power, and her ability to fly stems from her telekinetic abilities.

This question has been powered by the mind of Phoenix Rising's pollucci19.
4. An ancient soup from China that includes snake, civet and chicken flavoured with chrysanthemum petals comes from which province, often mistakenly called Canton?

Answer: Guangdong

The name of this traditional dish is better known as Dragon Tiger Phoenix, with the snake representing the dragon, the civet (or sometimes just a cat) represents the tiger, and the chicken represents the phoenix. While there is currently some resistance to using cat or civet, people come from overseas to try the dish, which is believed to support nutrition, especially in winter.

This question was cooked up by Phoenix Rising's VegemiteKid.
5. La Fenice is a venue located in Venice, Italy. For what reason might a tourist go there?

Answer: Cultural event - it's an opera house

Over the years, La Fenice has hosted the musical talents of people such as Rossini, Verdi and Bellini. The world premieres of "La Traviata" and "Rigoletto" were staged there. First opened in 1792, the opera house has had a dramatic past; (appropriately) it has burned down three times, and been rebuilt three times.

Phoenix Rising's VegemiteKid gave us this little something to sing about.
6. Which of the following television characters has the first name Angus?

Answer: MacGyver

Richard Dean Anderson played Angus "Mac" MacGyver in the first series of "MacGyver", aired in 1985. When the series was re-booted in 2016 he was played by Lucas Till. The man is a genius, particularly in the field of physics and chemistry, looks to find solutions to situations in a non-lethal manner and refuses to carry a gun on any of his missions. His trusty tool is the ever reliable Swiss Army knife.

MacGyver's name was not revealed until the seventh season of the original series. When questioned about it, he expresses his dislike for it and quickly changes the subject. Castle's first name is Richard, Frasier is the first name of Frasier Crane and Columbo's name is believed to be Frank. It was not spoken during the series but was indicated from time to time by physical evidence such as name plates.

The name of the Phoenix Rising member who created this question is pollucci19.
7. In 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', Dumbledore's magical pet, Fawkes, came to Harry's aid after he had been stabbed by the basilisk. What did Fawkes use to heal Harry?

Answer: Tears

Fawkes is a scarlet bird whose tears have magical healing powers. The tears he sheds on Harry's wound acted as an antidote to the basilisk poison and also healed the puncture. When Harry was battling the basilisk inside the Chamber, Fawkes also brought him the Sorting Hat, which contained the sword of Gryffindor. Harry was able to use the sword, made from goblin silver, to kill the basilisk.

This slice of magic appeared from the thin air around Phoenix Rising's leith90.
8. The name of which of the following web browsers was derived from the nickname of the red panda?

Answer: Firefox

Firefox is a free and open-source web browser that was created and developed by the Mozilla Foundation. Over its history its name has stepped on quite a few toes and, as a result of legal pressure, has been changed a number of times. Initially called the Mozilla Phoenix but software provider Phoenix Technologies was not impressed. The name was changed to Mozilla Firebird but that ran foul of the Firebird Project, a provider of database software. In February of 2004 the name Mozilla Firefox (or just Firefox) was adopted. As stated in the question, the name was derived from a nickname of the red panda and the creature, subsequently, became the organisation's mascot.

This question was created by Phoenix Rising's own "firebear", pollucci19.
9. Most US major sporting teams are named after the cities they serve. However in Arizona, three of the following four teams are named after the state. Which one is the exception?

Answer: Suns

The Arizona Diamondbacks were founded in 1998 as an expansion team in the MLB National League's West Division. The Arizona Coyotes are a National Hockey League team based in Glendale. They moved to Arizona in 1996 from Winnipeg, where they were known as the Winnipeg Jets. (Note) The Arizona Coyotes were known as the Phoenix Coyotes until 2014.

The Arizona Cardinals were founded in 1898 in Chicago, Illinois, before relocating to St Louis in 1960 and then to Tempe in Arizona in 1988. They compete in the National Football Conference's West Division. The Suns, named after the capital (Phoenix), compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of Western Conference Pacific Division. They were an expansion team formed in 1968.

This little ray of sunshine dawned on Phoenix Rising's 1nn1.
10. Now that you've had our nine darts thrown at you, it's your turn to identify the mythical creature that is the common link to all of these questions.

1. The Garuda is the sun-bird of Hindu mythology.
2. Fengguan means phoenix crown.
3. Jean Grey is also known as Phoenix and, in one of her re-incarnations, becomes Dark Phoenix.
4. The name of that ancient Chinese soup is Dragon Tiger Phoenix Soup.
