Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did the Pilgrims first land in the New World?

Answer: Provincetown

The Pilgrims first landed in the village on the tip of Cape Cod and created the Mayflower Contract. The lack of fresh water caused them to move to Plymouth.
2. What black American athlete was snubbed by Adolf Hitler at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin?

Answer: Cornelius Johnson

During the first day of the 1936 Olympics Hitler congratulated the first two winners (a German and a Finn). The snub occurred after the third event when Cornelius Johnson won the high jump and Hitler left before the medal ceremony.
3. What was the first colony to act against slavery?

Answer: Georgia

Georgia banned importation of slaves in 1735. It was felt that slavery was incompatible with the idea of a haven for debtors. This law was abolished in 1750.
4. What does a duck's quack NOT do?

Answer: attract mates

Despite the popular myth, duck quacks have been repeatedly shown to echo. It is the male duck's plumage that is used to attract females, not his voice. The quack is also used to warn invaders that they have entered the duck's territory and if the stranger continues to approach, the quack is used to try to scare them off.
5. Which of these are protected from hunting by Arizona state law?

Answer: Birds

Arizona Revised Statutes 17-236A makes it illegal to injure or take a bird. There is no law against hunting camels.
6. Michigan has a day honoring this person.

Answer: Willie Horton

Not the infamous murderer/rapist/castrater from Massachusetts! This Willie Horton grew up in Michigan, played for the Detroit Tigers, and did considerable philanthropic work in his neighborhood. The day of honor is Willie' birthday, October 28th.
7. In 1945, Hiroshima had a population of 350,000. How many did the United States expect to die from fallout after the explosion of the atomic bomb?

Answer: 0

At this time, no one knew about fallout or its effects. The only deaths expected were from the direct effects of the blast.
8. Who wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning "Profiles in Courage"?

Answer: Ted Sorensen

Kennedy conceived of the book and supervised its construction while a first-term senator. Davids did a majority of the research and Sorensen (one of Kennedy's speechwriters) did the writing. As Parmet found in his research, although Kennedy contributed the vision for the book, he contributed little else.
9. In his schooling, what sort of grades did Albert Einstein get?

Answer: Excellent

The myth that Einstein was a poor student started when an American researcher mistranslated some of Einstein's report cards. Students were given grades 1 to 6, 1 being the best. This was reversed (1 was worst) the year after Einstein graduated. Further research has uncovered a letter from Albert's mother to his aunt complimenting his grades.
10. How many real historical figures have been depicted on a PEZ dispenser?

Answer: 3 - Betsy Ross, Paul Revere, and Daniel Boone

This was done in 1976 as part of the United States' Bicentennial celebration. The Elvis dispenser seen in "The Client" was made by the movie's prop crew.
