1. What was the name of the first European ship to circumnavigate the globe?

Answer: the Victoria

Ferdinand Magellan was, of course, the leader of this expedition. The funny thing is we were all taught that Columbus discovered America and Magellan was first to circumnavigate the globe when really neither is accurate. Magellan's crew of of 250 men, sailing five ships, took three years to make the trip with only 18 men and one ship making it home. None of the 18 were Magellan.
2. Which of these famous men had it said about him that he should not follow in his father's political footsteps because of his severe stuttering?

Answer: Winston Churchill

Everyone seems to have heard about Churchill's being born in a ladies restroom. Not as many people are aware of his teacher's gloomy prediction of his future career.
3. Alexander Graham Bell had an idea for how people should answer the newly invented telephone. What did he think they should say?

Answer: Ahoy!

Evidently not all of his ideas were good ones!
4. In 1919 there was a great flood in Boston, killing 21 people. What did the flood consist of?

Answer: molasses

Over 2 million gallons of molasses flowed through the streets of Boston after an explosion at a rum factory.

Answer: sausage

In 1793, a group of Germans ate the same sausage and became very ill soon after. Six of them died and their disease had a new name based on the last meal they shared. If they had boiled the sausage for a few minutes first they could have killed the bacteria inside it.
6. The word "pastrami" comes to us from which language?

Answer: Romanian

Pastrami--a Deli staple, is really corned beef that has been smoked, or rather 'cured'. And I never even knew it was ailing!

Ohio was admitted to the Union in 1803, but Congress didn't get around to voting on the Buckeye state's admission until 1953.

A grocer in Appleton, WI actually took the Burma-Shave company up on their promotion and showed up with 900 empty jars collected by customers who had been urged to "send Frenchy to Mars." Mr. French and his family were sent on a trip to "Moers"---a town in Germany that pronounced its name like the red planet.
9. In the comic strip Hi & Lois, what is the maiden name of wife Lois?

Answer: Bailey

The sister of Mort Walker's most famous comic creation, Beetle Bailey, Lois and her hapless husband came to life when Beetle went to visit his sister while on furlough from Camp Swampy. Dik Browne is the co-creator of the popular strip.
10. Which U.S President had the most children?

Answer: John Tyler

President Tyler fathered 8 children with his first wife and 7 more with his second for a total of 15 children. His youngest child was born when Tyler was seventy years old (he was 30 years older than the 2nd Mrs. Tyler.) William Henry Harrison came in second with 10 offspring.
