Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What would not hold water?

Answer: Basket

Woven out of materials such as straw, bamboo, or strips of wood, baskets are usually porous.
2. Which affliction is a bit more dire than the others?

Answer: Plague

Yes, avoid the plague like The Plague.
3. Which is the odd one out in this list?

Answer: Commandment

The other three in the list are people who often give orders, yet all four seek to be obeyed.
4. What is not a cool word?

Answer: Burning

I am cool, calm and collected, sipping a chilled mint julep in the shade of an elm tree, dodging the burning sun.
5. Who has not been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize?

Answer: Bush

Based on the public record as of 2004, it is unlikely George Bush Jr. or Sr. will garner the prize for work done in the interest of peace. Mikhail Gorbachev won the honor in 1990, Nelson Mandela shared the prize with F.W. de Klerk in 1993, and Jimmy Carter was its recipient in 2002.
6. Which of these numbers isn't a multiple of 30? 30, 40, 60, 90, 120.

Answer: 40

The number 40 interrupts the sequence of adding 30 to arrive at the next number. Also, the number 3 can be factored into all except 40.
7. Who was not an emperor of Rome?

Answer: Rameses

Rameses was a pharaoh (king) of Egypt. There is reference to eleven pharaohs named Rameses through the ages, most notably Rameses II who erected cities and temples on the backs of slaves. (Meanwhile, over in Rome, the Emperor Vespasian invented the motorbike whereas Probus was an advocate of public transportation... believe it or not -- Not!)
8. Which of the following is not a play written by Sophocles?

Answer: Exodus

Exodus is the second book in the Jewish Torah and Pentateuch of the Bible. The word "exodus" comes from a Greek term meaning 'going out.' (Perhaps Sophocles did explore the Israelites' exodus from Egypt, an event which happened about a thousand years before Sophocles' time. Of the many plays he wrote, only seven complete ones have survived.)
9. Who shows 'team spirit' in this group?

Answer: Uniter

"United we stand; divided we fall." -- Aesop (of Fable fame).
10. Which biblical figure emerges by creating a common bond made with the previous nine answers? As always, the clues are not necessarily in order, but this quiz is scroll-bar friendly. Who do you think it is?

Answer: Moses

"Moses supposes his toeses are roses / But Moses supposes erroneously / Moses he knowses his toeses aren't roses / As Moses supposes his toeses to be!" (nursery rhyme- tongue twister sung in "Singin' In The Rain.") But seriously, folks, our subject is really the great man who, according to Judeo-Christian tradition, became the religious leader, teacher, lawmaker and statesman chosen by God to guide the Hebrew people (Israelites) out of slavery in Egypt and back to the land of Canaan to establish a great nation there. Scholars place Moses somewhere from 1400 to 1200 B.C., and debate continues as to which Pharaoh of Egypt reigned during the EXODUS (Quiz answer #8). Scripture refers throughout to nameless "Pharaoh," but most historians agree that Pharaoh RAMESES II (#7) was instrumental in either the first or second part of Moses' story. Archaeological study shows that Rameses II's son, Merneptah, was physically more likely to have been the Pharaoh of the Exodus. Moses lived a very long life, so for the purpose of our quiz, here are some long-winded highlights: Moses, a Levite, was raised as an Egyptian nobleman by Pharaoh's daughter after she found him in a BASKET (#1) on the banks of the Nile because Moses' mother hid him in the river to escape Pharaoh's decree that all male Hebrew children be killed. Later, when Moses was married and living as a shepherd, God spoke to him from a BURNING (#4) BUSH (#5), and commanded him to lead his enslaved people out of Egypt and back to the land of Abraham. Moses met with the Pharaoh and beseeched him to "Let my people go." Pharaoh was not willing to part with his slave labor force, but finally relented after the 10th PLAGUE (#2) took his eldest son's life as well as those of all Egyptian first-born sons. Reluctant at times, Moses was indeed the UNITER (#9) of the Israelites, and though it took 40 (#6) years of wandering in the desert (many trials and miracles, including the handing down of the 10 COMMANDMENTs (#3) from God to Moses on Mt. Sinai), the covenant with God was fulfilled.
