Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these men is not like the others?

Answer: Eddie Matthews

Coltrane, Adderly, and Evans were members of perhaps the greatest jazz small group of all time, the Miles Davis Sextet of the late 1950s. Eddie Matthews had a long career playing third base for the Braves baseball team in Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta.
2. Which of these women is not like the others? (Hint: Think ideology.)

Answer: Phyllis Schlafly

Brownmiller, Steinem, and Friedan were major feminist leaders of the 1960s and 70s, and still command substantial audiences today. Schlafly is a conservative commentator and activist whose career parallels the other three, though her views are essentially opposite theirs.

For example, Schlafly believes that women should not, by and large, work outside the home. She has also pushed for policies discouraging contraception and banning abortion. She, too, still commands a substantial audience.
3. Which of these prehistoric creatures is not like the others? (Hint: Do you know your dinosaurs? Well, one of these is not one!)

Answer: Dimetrodon

T-Rex, Tricereatops, and Velociraptor are all dinosaurs of the Cretaceous period, which ended approximately 65 million years ago. Dimetrodon, though it looks a lot like a dinosaur, is actually an earlier creature of the Permian period, which ended about 245 million years ago.
4. Which of these countries is not like the others in terms of historical connection?

Answer: Mongolia

Croatia, Bosnia, and Serbia were all parts of Yugoslavia for most of the twentieth century. With the fall of Eastern European communism, these countries were embroiled in a grim civil war with atrocities committed on all sides. Mongolia, on the other hand, is an East Asian country between China and Russia.
5. Which of these men is not like the others?

Answer: Y. A. Tittle

Hagel, Kerry, and Exon have each served Nebraska in the United States Senate. Y. A. Tittle was an NFL quarterback who, after being cast off by the San Francisco 49ers, ended up winning three division titles (and MVP awards) with the New York Giants in the 1960s.
6. Which of these women is not like the others? (Hint: Think field of endeavor.)

Answer: Emeline Pankhurst

Hamm, Zaharias, and Retton were all athletes and United States Olympic gold medal winners. Pankhurst was one of the most militant of the British women's suffragettes, going so far as to advocate violence in order to the gain the vote.
7. Which of these machines is not like the others?

Answer: Garand

The Illiac and Univac were early computers. The Illiac was the first computer of its power (a then-whopping 5K RAM) to be owned and operated by a public university, the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, in 1952. Its uses were primarily experimental, but it and its successors would eventually perform tasks like processing student registrations and various Department of Defense functions. The Univac was used by the Census Bureau beginning in 1951 to make demographic projections. In 1952, the machine raised some eyebrows by defying more traditional political pundits and correctly predicting a landslide victory for Eisenhower in that year's US Presidential election. Cray is a generic term for the supercomputers designed by Seymour Cray for various companies from the 1970s into the 1990s. Cray's machines were usually considered the fastest and most powerful on the market at any given time.

The Garand was the first semiautomatic rifle to be widely used by the US Army. Introduced in 1936, it was hailed by US General George S. Patton as "the greatest battle implement ever devised."
8. Which of these plants is not like the others?

Answer: Belladonna

Wolfsbane, aconite, and monkshood are all names for the same plant: "Aconitum napellus", a poisonous species widely believed to have various magical powers. Belladonna, also known as deadly nightshade, is an even more toxic flora with a similar reputation.
9. Which of these books is not like the others? (Hint: Think sections of the bookstore - or the author's grip on reality.)

Answer: Guns, Germs and Steel

"The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd, "The DaVinci Code" by Dan Brown, and "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by the late Douglas Adams are all novels, i.e., they are not true stories by and large, though their more rabid devotees may claim otherwise. "Guns, Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond is a non-fiction book about the natural history of various human groups.
10. Which of these movies is not like the others? (Hint: they're all superlative, but one of them in a different way.)

Answer: Plan 9 from Outer Space

"Citizen Kane", "Gone with the Wind", and "The Searchers" are all critically-acclaimed US films that are often proclaimed by their fans to be "the greatest movie of all time". Conversely, "Plan 9 from Outer Space" is a cheaply-made science-fiction movie. Its fans are often fanatical in trumpeting it as "the worst movie of all time"!
