Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following men did NOT take an ACTIVE part in the defense of the Alamo in 1836 (at least, active in the sense of being in a healthy state at the time)?

Answer: Jim Bowie

Galba Fuqua was one of the youngest defenders of the Alamo. He was just 16 years of age when he died there, having ridden 76 miles from the DeWitt Colony at Gonzales. James Bonham was an officer of the Alamo Garrison; the famous frontiersman and politician Davey Crockett was a recent arrival from Tennessee. Jim Bowie, another famed frontiersman, from Kentucky, was sick with fever when the Alamo was attacked by Mexican troops under the command of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna.

He was bayonetted in his bed.
2. Which of the following was NOT a member of the English Royal House of Tudor?

Answer: James I

Henry VII became the first of the Tudor monarchs when he killed Richard III of the House of York, at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. Henry's son, Henry VIII, followed his father to the throne, and the younger Henry's three children - Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I - all reigned as monarch after his death. James I became King of England in 1603 after the death of Elizabeth, cousin of his mother Mary (Queen of Scots).

He was the first of the Stuart monarchs.
3. Which was NOT a battle or campaign fought during WW1?

Answer: Battle of the Bulge

The Gallipoli Campaign took place from April 1915 - January 1916. The Battles of the Somme occurred in July - November 1916, and July - November 1918. The Passchendaele Campaign was fought from July - November 1917. (July to November is a popular time for fighting, it seems.) The Battle of the Bulge, however, was the last major offensive mounted by the Germans in WW2 (December 1944 - January 1945).
4. Who was NOT a painter of the 'High Renaissance' period?

Answer: Peter Paul Rubens

Peter Paul Rubens, the famous Flemish artist, was active during what is known as the 'Baroque' period.
5. Which is NOT one of the three national capital cities of the Republic of South Africa?

Answer: Johannesburg

Kaapstad is the legislative capital of the country; Pretoria is the administrative capital and seat of government; and Bloemfontein is the site of the judicial capital. Johannesburg, while the capital city of Gauteng Province, does not play a part in the governing of South Africa as a nation.
6. Which city is NOT situated on the North Island of New Zealand?

Answer: Christchurch

Christchurch is the largest city on New Zealand's South Island.
7. In Greek mythology, who from the following was NOT one of the Titans?

Answer: Zeus

Zeus was the son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. When Cronus was warned that he would be overthrown by one of his children, he ate five of them. The sixth, Zeus, was saved by Rhea, who substituted a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes. When he was grown Zeus forced Cronus to disgorge the other five children, who then fought against Cronus and indeed overthrew his supreme rule.
8. Who was NOT an original member of The Beatles?

Answer: Ringo Starr

The Quarrymen formed in 1959 and in 1960 changed their name to The Beatles. Ringo replaced Best in 1962... and the rest, as they say, is history.
9. Which former US president did NOT practice law prior to being elected to office?

Answer: Zachary Taylor

Zachary Taylor was elected to the position of President of the USA in March 1849. Prior to that he had been a soldier. He passed away while in office in July 1850 from gastroenteritis.
The three incorrect answers all had a commonality. They were all lawyers, they were all state governors prior to being elected and all became writers after they left office.
10. Which is NOT a nom de plume?

Answer: Anne Rice

Mary Ann Evans (1819 - 1880) wrote under the name George Eliot and produced such works as 'Middlemarch' and 'The Mill on the Floss'. Richard Bachman is the sometime-pseudonym of international best-selling author Stephen King (1947), while Paul French was the name used by prolific writer Isaac Asimov (1920 - 1992) when he wrote his 'Lucky Starr' series for children. Anne Rice was born as Howard O'Brien but legally changed her first name to Anne in her youth.

She married poet Stan Rice and it's with that surname that we know her as the author of the 'Vampire Chronicles'.
