Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The phrase "What's Up, Doc?" was used as the title of a 1972 comedy movie directed by Peter Bogdanovich. The male lead was Ryan O'Neal, but who was his female co-star?

Answer: Barbra Streisand

The movie falls into the genre generally known as "screwball comedy". The plot, as far as it goes, consists of a series of comic set-pieces constructed around the confusions caused by four identical tartan overnight bags containing (a) some musical rocks, (b) some clothes, (c) jewels, and (d) top-secret documents. You can probably make up the rest of the plot yourself. It's actually much funnier than it sounds on paper. Madeline Kahn, playing O'Neal's fiancé, is particularly good.

2. Where on your body would you wear iconic apparel items known as "Doc Martens"?

Answer: Your feet

"Doc Martens" became a colloquial term for boots (mainly) and shoes made initially in Europe under the official name "Dr Martens". They were named after a German Army doctor who developed a new type of boot in around 1945. Klaus Märtens created boots with soft leather uppers and air-cushioned soles.

The first boots were manufactured in 1947, but it was not until Klaus Märtens joined up with the British Griggs footwear group that a legend was born. Initially, Dr Martens boots were the tough choice of workers, but they became fashion accessories in the 1960s, picked up initially by skinheads and carried on by succeeding generations of young pop music fans. Famous Doc Martens wearers included Pope John Paul II, Madonna, Elton John and Naomi Campbell.
3. Doctor Nick is a character on "The Simpsons". He is most well known for what catchphrase?

Answer: Hi everybody!

Dr. Nick is extremely lazy and incompetent. Usually, after saying "Hi everybody!", a crowd says "Hi Dr. Nick!".
4. Arguably the most famous "doc" in American history was the 19th century Western gunfighter Doc Holliday. In addition to his rather controversial contribution to law enforcement, "Doc" was actually a licensed physician; in what branch of medicine did he practice?

Answer: Dentistry

John Henry Holliday was born in Georgia in 1851. He received a degree in dental surgery in 1872, and began his practice in Atlanta, later moving to Texas. He is best known, of course, for his lifelong friendship with Wyatt Earp, whom he met in Arizona around 1877, and for his part in the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. This iconic and controversial gun battle claimed the lives of outlaws Billy Clanton and Frank and Tom McLaury, There were at the time conflicting accounts as to what actually occurred, and controversy still rages over the actions of the Earp brothers and Holliday, which have been variously described as everything from proper self-defense to outright murder.

A formidable and feared gunman, Holliday was also known for his hot temper and was indicted, along with Wyatt and Virgil Earp, for the revenge killing of outlaw Frank Stilwell (who had killed Morgan Earp, the youngest of the Earp brothers), as well as being a prime suspect in the death of outlaw Johnny Ringo in 1882. Another prominent feature of Holliday's brief but colorful life was his volatile romance with Mary Katherine Horony, popularly known as "Big Nose Kate". Holliday suffered throughout his life from tuberculosis, which had claimed the life of his mother when he was only 15. In 1887, at the age of 36, Holliday himself died of tuberculosis in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. He has been portrayed in numerous Western films by such actors as Kirk Douglas, Cesar Romero, Walter Huston, Victor Mature, Jason Robards, Val Kilmer, and Dennis Quaid.
5. "Doctor, doctor, give me the news!" Robert Palmer demanded information about his health in a 1979 hit. The singer then goes on to claim he has been diagnosed with what terrible ailment?

Answer: A bad case of lovin' you

"Doctor, doctor, give me the news / I've got a bad case of lovin' you / No pill's gonna cure my ill / I've got a bad case of lovin' you!"

"Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)", written by the American songwriter Moon Martin, took the English singer Robert Palmer to Number One on the Canadian RPM Chart and to Number Fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979. It's been used as soundtrack music innumerable times since then, especially when doctors are otherwise involved -- for example, it's turned up in the medical sitcom "Scrubs" and in commercials for the soft drink Dr. Pepper.

Answer: Doc Severinsen

Carl Hilding "Doc" Severinsen was born July 7, 1927 in Arlington, Oregon. He was nicknamed "Little Doc" after his father, who was a dentist.

He started with "The Tonight Show" in 1952 during Steve Allen's tenure as host. In 1967, Severinsen took over as bandleader and would occasionally stand in for Ed McMahon as Carson's announcer and sidekick. He remained bandleader until Carson retired in 1992.

8. Which of these famous 'docs' on television or in print was born in Germany, orphaned in the Holocaust, served as a sniper in the Israeli War of Independence, and earned a doctorate of education from Columbia University, New York?

Answer: Dr. Ruth

The legendary sex doc Dr. Ruth was born Karola Ruth Siegel in Germany in 1928. She was sent to safety in Switzerland where she learned her parents had been sent to prison camps and perished. She went to live in British Palestine where she became a sniper in the Israeli War of Independence partly due to her small stature and agility. In 1948 she was seriously injured in that war. She became a sex therapist and made the headlines frequently for her openness about sexual matters and giving necessary information to people once she immigrated to the States.
The dynamic TV doctor who got his start on Oprah's show with public health information, Dr. Mehmet Oz, was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1960. He is of Turkish origin. His undergraduate degree is from Harvard and his MD and MBA degrees are from the University of Pennsylvania School of medicine and the Wharton School of business. His speciality is cardiovascular health and he practices medicine in addition to dispensing health living information on television.
"Dr. Seuss" was born Theodor Seuss Geisel in 1904 in Springfield Massachusetts of German origin. He did his undergraduate degree in English at Dartmouth College and went to Oxford to study English literature but returned before earning his doctorate. Perhaps for this reason he used Dr in his pen name. Known for his cartoons, poetry and children's books he became wildly famous. Several generations of children learned to read his books with their entertaining rhythms and drawings. He died in 1991.
"Dr. Phil" another TV doc, was born Philipp McGraw in Vinita, Oklahoma in 1950. The sometimes controversial yet entertaining doctor studied psychology and went to the doctoral level and holds a doctorate in psychology. Although not a medical doctor, he once dabbled in weight loss products and has had a finger in many a pie.

9. Dr Donald "Ducky" Mallard was the chief Medical Examiner in the US TV show "NCIS", which first aired in 2003. David McCallum was the actor behind the role, but which spy show did he also star in 40 years earlier?

Answer: The Man From U.N.C.L.E

Born in 1933, David McCallum had several roles on stage and in movies before he played Illya Kuryakin, a Russian agent, in four seasons of "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." from 1964 to 1968. The show was conceived to star Robert Vaughn as a US agent, but McCallum's character was so popular it became a two-hander. U.N.C.L.E. stood for United Network Command for Law and Enforcement. McCallum was the son of a noted musician and was a gifted musician himself. Movie roles included "A Night to Remember" (1958) and "The Great Escape" (1963).
Meanwhile, the even older Vaughan, he was born in 1932, was also still working as he hit the age of 80. He had just finished eight seasons in "Hustle" on BBC TV, and also a short role in "Coronation Street", ITV's long-running soap opera (playing Americans in both).
This question was written by darksplash, who enjoys "NCIS" and remembers "The Man From U.N.C.L.E."

Answer: Jackson Browne

Jackson Browne was born in Germany in 1948, where his father was a serving US soldier. The family moved to California when he was aged three.
