Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dick Button, Elvis Stojko, and Evgeni Plushenko all made their mark in which sport?

Answer: Ice skating

American skater Dick Button was considered by many to be one of the most important figures in American skating. He won two Olympic gold medals, as well as numerous World and US championships. Canadian Elvis Stojko was an Olympic silver medalist who wowed crowds with his flamboyant and very difficult style of skating. Russian skater Evgeni Plushenko was known for his exceptional jumps, as well as his unusual flexibility which allowed him to perform moves that most male skaters were unable to do.
2. Where could you have heard the now extinct language known as Atakapa?

Answer: Southern Louisiana, USA

The Atakapa Indians of southern Louisiana spoke an unusual language that bears no resemblance to any other known Native American tongue. Sadly the last native speakers of this unusual language died in the early part of the 20th century and, as only about 50 words of the language are known, it is doubtful that this language will ever be spoken on the planet again.

It disappeared along with its people, as so many North and South American cultures and languages have done.
3. Which of the following statements about the coffins used in Orthodox Judaism is true?

Answer: They use no metal

The coffins used in Orthodox Judaism are simple affairs made of plain wood with a lid. They do not use any kind of metal or other decorations. Wooden pegs are used instead of metal nails and the coffin has no handles or nameplates. As with most things, there are variations, but simplicity is of the utmost importance and is a sign of humbleness.
4. In 1968, actress Elizabeth Taylor was given what gift from her then husband Richard Burton?

Answer: The Krupp Diamond

Elizabeth Taylor was the recipient of the 33.19 carat Krupp Diamond from her husband. At the time it was bought, it was the highest price ever paid for a diamond ring. This beautiful diamond is set in platinum and could be seen on the hand of Elizabeth Taylor almost every day for the rest of her life.
5. If you are looking to buy clingstone as opposed to freestone, which fruit are you shopping for?

Answer: Peach

Peaches can be separated into freestone and clingstone, which are descriptions of how hard the flesh clings to the large pit in the middle of the peach. With a clingstone, the pit must usually be cut out, and the fruit is usually very juicy. In freestone peaches, the pits come out easily, and they are usually smaller, less juicy, and sweeter than the clingstone.
6. To which of these countries would I have to travel if I wanted to visit the Eas a' Chual Aluinn Waterfall?

Answer: Scotland

Found in Scotland, Eas a' Chual Aluinn Waterfall is the highest waterfall in Britain. To see these beautiful remote waterfalls, a visitor must hike across three miles of the peat bogs for which Scotland is so famous. Not easy to get to, but definitely worth the trip.
7. 17th and 18th century women were known to use which of the following toxic plants to dilate the pupils of their eyes?

Answer: Belladonna

Although quite poisonous, belladonna was used to dilate the pupils, as this was thought to be a very erotic look. Its toxic attributes were well known but ignored. Occasional use would usually cause long-lasting damage and prolonged use caused permanent blindness.
8. Cypher the superhero has which of the following superpowers?

Answer: He can decode anything

Cypher had the special ability to decipher any type of code. It was the only real talent that this minor superhero had. Cypher was a mutant who was first seen while he was being trained for action by the X-Men. He did not last really long when it became apparent that his skill was not of much use and his fighting skills were limited. I am sure he would have loved FunTrivia.
9. In 2005, a South Korean man died after playing the video game "Star Craft" for 50 hours straight.

Answer: True

A Korean man named Lee Seung Seop was addicted to the video game "Star Craft". This addiction had cost him his home, his job, and his girlfriend. In 2005 he died from cardiac arrest after playing this game for over 50 hours without taking a break. Video game addiction is a very real disorder, and many of those who suffer from it have been known to play for days without stopping for normal activities such as eating, drinking and going to the restroom.

There are reports of players, usually males, who have played until they passed out, and occasionally, died.
10. When Europeans first arrived at the continent of Australia, they were surprised by the huge variety of wild felines.

Answer: False

This is completely false. Antarctica and Australia are the only continents that did not have indigenous felines of any kind. Cats were introduced to Australia shortly after the first arrival of Europeans, and they quickly flourished. They, like so many other introduced species, have had a major impact on the flora and fauna of Australia.
