Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which of the following James Bond films is Amsterdam one of the main locations?

Answer: Diamonds Are Forever

In this 1971 film James Bond (Sean Connery) is sent on a mission to uncover and destroy a diamond smuggling ring. His first stop is Amsterdam where his contact is Tiffany Case (Jill St. John). Bond poses as diamond smuggler Peter Franks (Joe Robinson), however, the real Franks is on the same mission. Bond intercepts him, kills him and then switches identities. Sadly, not much of Amsterdam is seen. The action, predominantly, takes place in the lift (elevator) and the rooms of Tiffany Case's apartment building.

This was Sean Connery's final outing as James Bond for Eon Productions. It was met with mixed reviews, but it did exceptionally well at the box office.

2. The home of which artist, who lived there between 1639 and 1656, is now a museum located on Jodenbreestraat in Amsterdam?

Answer: Rembrandt

Rembrandt van Rijn was born in Leiden in 1606 and died in Amsterdam in 1669. His home in Amsterdam, which he had to sell in 1656 when he lost all his money, has been reconstructed to show the interior as it would have been in his time. The Rembrandt painting which even the most Philistine among us will of heard of is 'The Night Watch' from 1642, which is on display at Amsterdam's main museum, the Rijksmuseum.

Although all the artists listed were Dutch, only Rembrandt belongs in the seventeenth century.

rossian used her limited artistic ability to craft this question.
3. Among the exhibits at Amsterdam's Erotic Museum are a series of sketches drawn by which musician, who famously spent a week in bed at the city's Hilton Hotel?

Answer: John Lennon

The erotic sketches of Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono, include some done by the musician during their week long "bed in" at the Hilton in 1969 which was a non violent protest of the Vietnam war. The museum also contains many vintage erotic photographs as well offering a fascinating history of the Amsterdam red light district in which it is situated.

4. One of the reasons Amsterdam's original canals were built, was for defence purposes.

Answer: True

The first canals in the city were built in the Middle Ages and had two roles. The first was defence and the second, water management. As the city expanded the canals found their way inside the city's walls and their original function, as a consequence, disappeared. However, that led to them being used for a new role, the transportation of goods. The dawn of the seventeenth century saw Amsterdam enter its "Golden Age" with trade flourishing at an astonishing rate. To take advantage of this, a massive project to dig out three main canals for the city was undertaken. It would take fifty years to complete (by approximately 1660) but it saw Amsterdam expand to four times its size. The intricate system of canals and the urban plan that was built around them are astounding. So much so that, in 2010, they were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and expanded Amsterdam's reputation as the "Venice of the North".

5. All four of these men made their names in sport. All four of them are from Amsterdam. Three of them played football (soccer), but which of them was known for a different sport?

Answer: "Boy" Hayje

Johan Hayje, best known as "Boy" entered the Formula One circuit in 1976 but had little joy, racing as a member of RAM Racing. His F1 career lasted two seasons and seven championship races. Sadly, he never earned a championship point during that period. Prior to that he had won the Dutch Formula Ford championships before graduating to Formula 5000 and Formula 3.

The three footballers are all well known to soccer fans, with Cruyff, in particular, being considered by many experts to be among the best players of all time.

While not renowned for sporting prowess, rossian knew enough to create this question.
6. Katie Melua sang in 2005 about the "Nine Million Bicycles" in Beijing. According to Central Bureau of Statistics data from 2015, ten years later, did Amsterdam have more than nine million bicycles?

Answer: No

According to this data, there were 847,000 bicycles in Amsterdam, more than one per person. If we looked at Netherlands on the whole, 2016 Netherlands Travel Data shows that there were 23 million bicycles between 17 million inhabitants. The same report also showed that 25% of the total number of trips taken was on a bicycle, compared with around 18% in Denmark and around 1% in the US and Australia, with short trips attracting the most bicycle usage. It's not an entirely fair comparison - Beijing by land size is 77 times as big as Amsterdam with a population of 21.7 million at the end of 2015, compared to 821,752 in Amsterdam.

7. Wherever you turn in Amsterdam you are likely to find stalls selling Broodje Haring, a sandwich of raw herring on a bun topped with chopped onions and pickles. But what in Amsterdam is Hollandse Nieuwe?

Answer: the first catch of the season

The Dutch love their herring and enjoy eating it raw for over 600 years, however, there are specified times allocated to their capture and this is limited to the period mid-May to mid-June. This is also a time when the herring are getting themselves ready to lay eggs and are likely to be at their fattest.

The first catch, or Hollandse Nieuwe, is traditionally placed in an oak barrel and auctioned off in the midst of a feast with the proceeds presented to a charity.
8. The world's first (and in 2019, only) floating flower market was in Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam. What does 'floating' mean in this context?

Answer: The stalls are set up on houseboats in the canal

Over a dozen houseboats are set on the Singel Canal between Koningsplein and Muntplein. Whilst there are beautiful hanging vines and other flowers draped from the ceiling, most of them are simply displayed on tables. This display is a remnant from the times when horticultural supplies were shipped around the city by barges. It is a permanent feature and is open in all seasons - which of course means its produce will also change with the seasons.

9. The Netherlands is a consistently good national soccer team, winning the UEFA European Championship in 1988. In 2000 when they were the co-hosts with Belgium, how far did they advance when they played their last match of the competition in Amsterdam?

Answer: They lost their semi final to Italy on penalties

In what was labelled by football writers as one of the greatest international tournaments ever, The Netherlands entered the tournament as favourites. They won all three of their Group games, thrashed FR Yugoslavia 6- 1 in the quarter finals before playing a nil all draw with Italy in front of 51,000 home town fans. Still tied after double extra time, the game was decided by a penalty shoot-out which Italy won 3-1.

10. Which of the following Bond girls, blessed with an "X" factor, was born and raised in Amsterdam?

Answer: Famke Janssen

Janssen was born in Amstelveen, a suburb of Amsterdam and studied economics at the University of Amsterdam ("the stupidest thing I've ever done" she said) before moving to the United States to kickstart a modelling career in the 1980s. In 1995 she played the role of the villainous Xenia Onatopp in the James Bond film "GoldenEye", but she is also well known for her roles in the "Taken" franchise and as Jean Grey in the "X-Men" series of films.

(Notes) Honor Blackman is English and played Pussy Galore in "Goldfinger" (1964), Britt Ekland is Swedish, played Mary Goodnight in "The Man with the Golden Gun" (1974) and Maryam d'Abo, also English, was Kara Milovy in "The Living Daylights" (1987).
