Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Malibu rum is flavoured with natural coconut extract. It originally gained its popularity from the fact that its use made the preparation of a popular mixed drink simpler. What is mixed with rum and coconut to make a Pina Colada?

Answer: Pineapple juice

The pina colada started out as a mixture of rum and pineapple juice in the 1920s; the addition of coconut cream dates from the 1950s. There are many variants on the drink, as well as a variety of preparation methods. The use of coconut-flavored rum simplifies the preparation, but the classic pina colada uses coconut cream to produce a rich texture as well as the flavor. Pina colada has been the national drink of Puerto Rico since 1978.
2. This shrub, a member of the aster family, was first classified in 1995, and is only found in the Santa Monica Mountains near Malibu CA. What is its scientific name?

Answer: Baccharis malibuensis

The Malibu baccharis has only been found in six sites near Malibu Creek. The total number of known plants is around 1000 plants, and it is considered to be critically imperiled by the NatureServe conservation status system. The example shown here is a small one.

The woody shrub can grow to reach anything between 40 cm and 2 m (15 inches to nearly 7 feet) in height. It has long thin leaves, and white flowers formed in clusters.
3. What American car manufacturer produced a series called Malibu?

Answer: General Motors

General Motors is the only American company given. They first produced the Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu in 1964. The name was intended to suggest the sporty California beach party lifestyle. The line was discontinued in 1983, but revived in 1997.
4. The 1967 movie "Don't Make Waves" featured a character named Malibu. What actress, possibly better known for the manner of her death than for her screen roles, played Malibu?

Answer: Sharon Tate

All of these women met tragic ends, but Sharon Tate (24 January 1943 - 9 August 1969), one of the victims of the Manson family killings, played Malibu in the first of her films to be released. Her comedic skills have been commented on, but the role is better known as being the model for the Malibu Barbie doll.

The movie was a comedy about changing romantic entanglements set against a California background, playing on the popularity of the beach party genre. The title song was performed by The Byrds.
5. "Malibu" is a single by the American band Hole. The lyrics, written by one of the members of the band, are about a period spent in a drug rehabilitation clinic by her late husband, Kurt Cobain. Which singer and guitarist wrote these lyrics?

Answer: Courtney Love

Courtney Love has been the lead singer for the alternative rock band Hole since 1989, with some breaks when band members explored other avenues. She was married to Kurt Cobain, lead singer of Nirvana, from 1992 until his death in 1994. The lineup of Hole has varied over the years; at the time when "Malibu" was recorded in 1997, it included Courtney Love (vocals, rhythm guitar), Eric Erlandson (lead guitar), Melissa Auf der Maur (bass, backing vocals) and some guest performers whose identity is unclear and debated. Love and Erlandson wrote the song, along with Billy Corgan from The Smashing Pumpkins.
6. Malibu Comics (also known as Malibu Graphics) published comics in the late 1980s and early 1990s, before being taken over by Marvel Comics. Although they were best known for the Ultraverse series, they also published a number of comics featuring a hero who had been raised in the jungle, possibly by relatives of the animals pictured. Who featured in these three short-lived series?

Answer: Tarzan

The character of Tarzan originated in Edgar Rice Burroughs's 1912 book "Tarzan of the Apes". The book had 23 sequels, and innumerable spinoffs in other media, including films and comics. Malibu Comics published three Tarzan series in 1992: "Tarzan the Warrior" (5 issues), "Tarzan: Love, Lies, and the Lost City" (3 issues) and "Tarzan the Beckoning" (7 issues).
7. The Malibu Stakes is a horse race for three-year olds run in December at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia CA. Which renowned jockey won the race eight times between 1957 and 1986? (The profession of those in the picture is a hint.)

Answer: Willie Shoemaker

William Lee Shoemaker (19 August 1931 - 12 October 2003) was also referred to as "Bill" and "The Shoe". He rode the winner of the Malibu Stakes in 1957, 1961, 1968, 1972, 1977 (twice, as the race was run in two divisions that year), 1980 and 1986. The picture shows some early 20th century Welsh shoemakers at work.

Eddie Arcaro (19 February 1916 - 4 November 1997) was an American jockey who rode the winner of the U.S. Triple Crown twice, on Whirlaway in 1941 and on Citation in 1948. Roy Higgins (born 5 June 1938) is an Australian jockey who won the Melbourne Cup twice, on Light Fingers in 1965 and on Red Handed in 1967. Frankie Dettori (born 15 December 1970) is an Italian-born jockey who has ridden from an English base since 1985, with wins in many major events, including a day when he won all seven races at the Ascot Racecourse.
8. What aircraft manufacturer nicknamed its PA-46 the Malibu? (The photo provides a punning clue to the answer.)

Answer: Piper

The Piper PA-46 is a family of single-engined planes designed for a single pilot and up to five passengers, whose main market is private pilots.

The first flight of a PA-46 prototype was on 30 November 1979. The first production model of the PA-46-310P Malibu was initially flown in August 1982, with the first sales later that year. Production was discontinued in 1986 after a number of accidents. The PA-46-350P Malibu Mirage was introduced in 1988, and the PA-46-500TP Malibu Meridian in 2000.
9. In 1983, the television miniseries "Malibu" followed the lives of a young couple who move from the Midwest to Malibu. From which city did they originate? (There is a clue in the photo that will be easier to see if you click on the photo to make it larger.)

Answer: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

William Atherton and Susan Dey played the young couple (Stan and Linda Harvey) who move to Malibu and get caught up in the beach lifestyle - sun, sand and surf are combined with plenty of sex and ambition for an all-star extravaganza featuring such (at the time) big name actors as Kim Novak, James Coburn, George Hamilton, Eva Marie Saint, Anthony Newley, Chad Everett, Valerie Perrine, Richard Mulligan and Troy Donahue.

This 1907 postcard shows one of the two mail cars used to sort mail while in transit around Milwaukee. (If you enlarge it, you can read that fact!) None of the other cities is in the Midwest: Boston is Northeast, Atlanta Southeast and Portland Northwest.
10. The television show "The Simpsons" has had several episodes that featured a fashion doll clearly spoofing the iconic Barbie doll. What was this doll's name?

Answer: Malibu Stacy

The details of Malibu Stacy's back story vary in the different episodes in which she is featured, as is typical of "The Simpsons". According to "Lisa vs Malibu Stacy", the original 1959 doll was designed to be edible, but failed because dried onion was not all that palatable; according to "Homer's Barbershop Quartet", there was a 1958 version that had to be withdrawn from sale because of the physical hazard posed by her extreme shape.

In any case, the parallels between Stacy and Barbie are clear! In "Homer vs Dignity", Waylon Smithers takes a leave of absence from his job at the nuclear plant in order to produce and star in a musical about the life of Malibu Stacy called "Sold Separately".

While you might think of these dolls as children's toys, Smithers is the president of the Malibu Stacy Fan Club, and has the world's largest collection of the dolls.
