Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am the female parent in the house - unfortunately, I move very, very slowly because of an affliction due to a magical and/or physical infection. What does my daughter, Swimbaby, call me (a pun on an undead creature)?

Answer: Mombie

A mobster is a gangster, mothra is a kaiju (Japanese word that means "strange beast" featured in "Godzilla" movies) and Merthyr is a city in Wales, U.K.

A zombie is a human who moves very slowly and is not aware of what is happening because of being very tired, infected by magic and/or dead. Thus, a Mombie is a maternal person who might meet at least one of these definitions. (Personally, the "being very tired" choice rings a bell!)
2. My father vacationed in Transylvania - Swimbaby loved the new look he brought back. Mombie, not so much. The fangs, bat wings and glowing red eyes led our family to rename him what?

Answer: Grampire

Grampa was turned into a vampire - thus Grampire. The adjectives are indicative of this type of creature.

Harker and Renfield are both characters in Bram Stoker's "Dracula".

Ganymede was the Greek mythological cup bearer of the gods. It is also the name of a moon of Jupiter. This has nothing to do with our family tree - but a cool fact, nevertheless.
3. My mother's auburn-haired unmarried sisters (maiden name Solenopsis) are known for their crimson clothing. When they stayed in our guest room, they opened their suitcases and small reddish creatures emerged; they infested our house and had a painful sting. What do we call our HUMAN relations?

Answer: Red Aunts

My aunts with auburn hair are called the Red Aunts. The stinging insects in their suitcases are members of the genus Solenopsis. Called red ants and fire ants, they have the typical body of an ant. Please stay away...their painful sting is similar to what one feels when burned by fire (hence the name.)

Crimson Crawlers are my own invention - perhaps a good name for a band of superheroes that wear cool red spandex outfits, climb walls and fight for good!

**As an aside, I made the mistake of walking into a lawn in Mexico that was infested with fire ants while wearing sandals (me, not the ants). I lost most of my vacation days because I was laid up in bed due to the blistering of my feet. Trust me - respect these creatures!**
4. The sun rises slowly in the eastern sky with rosy and golden colors. Swimbaby's father also awakens from his uneasy rest. Every morning, he mindlessly shuffles to the local shopping mall in Monroeville, Pennsylvania in search of sustenance. What does our family fondly call him (referring to a 1978 film)?

Answer: Dad of the Dead

The question is a riff of the title of the 1978 film "Dawn of the Dead" - the sequel of the 1968 "Night of the Living Dead".

This scary movie was co-written and directed by George A. Romero. It was filmed in Pittsburgh and Monroeville, PA.

(Mombie also shuffles mindlessly to the kitchen every morning in search of COFFEE...please give me java!)
5. Grandmother's first name is Rayanne. She married a gentleman named Bruce Banner who was involved with a science experiment that did not turn out so well. Swimbaby's nickname for her grandmother is also the cause of Mr. Banner's transformation into a large, green angry creature. What is it? (Hint, hint and hint - think of the relationship, nickname and the science experiment.)

Answer: Gamma Ray

Bruce Banner was a character created by comic book artists Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and first appeared in "The Incredible Hulk #1." Bruce has some anger issues following his exposure to gamma rays.

A gamma ray is the smallest wavelength and has the most energy of any wave in
the electromagnetic spectrum. (In case you are interested, please refer to the Encyclopaedia Britannica under the physics term "gamma ray".) Otherwise, come to our Halloween party where you may meet the real Gramma Ray - you are more than welcome. ;-)
6. We have a family pet who is named after a scary dog in a Stephen King book. When we whistle, who comes running?

Answer: Cujo

Lassie was the name of an American TV dog that barked so that folks could pull Timmy out of the well (not the sharpest crayon in the box, was he?). By the way, the original Lassie was a male Collie. Perhaps Laddie would be more appropriate.

Wolfie was the name that the Terminator (actor Arnold Schwarzenegger) called John Conner's dog in order to discover that his foster family was dead in the movie "Terminator 2". The dog's name was actually Max.

Jacko is the dog that lives next door to Swimbaby. (Very barky, if you ask me.)

Cujo was a good-natured St. Bernard who chased a wild rabbit in the fields and into a cave where a rabid bat bit him on the nose and turned him mad. :-(
7. My husband's British family displays their ancestor's heraldry on a tapestry that depicts a mounted, armored and helmeted man in combat against a terrible foe. What does the family call this hero? (Hint - he fought a shambling, staggering, slathering and shuffling foe who appeared to have a taste for brains.)

Answer: Knight of the Living Dead

I can hear the groans from here (rightfully, I admit) . I took many liberties with this question. The original "Night of the Living Dead" (1968 - director George Romero) is one of the definitive Zombie movies.

Perhaps King Arthur had a bit of arthritis in his sword wielding hand. Sir Tagalong is my invention (but I would not want him protecting my flank). As everyone knows, Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-As-Sir Lancelot is a funny character in the film "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".

I beg your pardon for this terrible question - but you must admit that I used four appropriate adjectives beginning with the letter "s" in the hint - not so easy to do, trust me!
8. My aunt brought a Good Guy doll to my daughter's Halloween celebration. Later that night, a creepy image animated the toy. What was the name of this killer doll?

Answer: Chucky

Chucky was the star of the 1988 film "Child's Play". Charles Lee Ray is the evil voodoo man that transferred his soul into the Good Guy doll when he was cornered in a toy store and was killed by Detective Mike Norris.
9. Jonathan Harker (my great-grandfather) was an English estate agent. His job required him to travel to a mid-European country. He was transported by the client's coach (drawn by four black horses) to a castle in the Carpathian Mountains. Whom did he not meet in this adventure?

Answer: Crispin Kent

This is indeed a tough question. Jonathan Harker was Mina Murray's fiance in "Dracula". Mina became Dracula's love interest (as opposed to the other "brides" he had enthralled). Quincey Morris was an American sharpshooter who attempted to kill Count Dracula. Lord Goldaming was initially called Arthur Holwood in Bram Stoker's novel but inherited the title when his father passed away in this tale. Crispin Kent is my own invention. (I like it because it sounds like a crunchy treat that Superman might enjoy. OK - that was terrible!)
10. My cousin is famous! He was featured in the American TV show "The Addams Family." My family member is short, hairy and wears sunglasses, a bowler hat and gloves. Therefore, he is always attired for formal family dinners. What is his name?

Answer: Cousin Itt

Cousin Itt did not live in the mansion with the main characters in the TV show, although he made frequent guest appearances. He is depicted as a "carefree bachelor with an extravagant lifestyle and is renowned among the Addamses for his many female companions". (Wikipedia)

Believe it or not, his child is named What. Evidently, his wife Margaret explains that "What!" was the first word out of the obstetrician's mouth upon seeing the baby. Evidently, the name stuck.
