Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals: The mosquito is often deemed the most deadly animal on the planet; however, some people do not count the mosquito as being an animal. Which of these animals causes the most deaths because of capsizing boats and trampling, not because of actual physical attacks?

Answer: Hippopotamus

The hippopotamus is one of the most deadly creatures to humans; but not because they are out for blood like some other "deadly" animals are. Rather, it is simply because they are big; VERY big. Hippos cause the most human deaths because of trampling, especially in a large group of hippos, as well as capsizing boats, thus drowning those in it.
2. Brain teasers: Why did I get the idea Dora lived on Fedora Drive? This is a hidden phrase. Bon Jovi might help you out. Part of it also rhymes with the answer.

Answer: Dead or Alive

"Dead or Alive" is a 1994 song by Bon Jovi, and remade by Daughtry in 2006. The hidden word can be found in "iDEA DORA LIVEd", and rhymes with "Fedora Drive". "Dead/Fed", "Or a-/ora", "-live/Drive".
3. Celebrities: This actress was born on December 27, 1901, and died May 6, 1992. She was born in Germany but later moved to America. She played Lola-Lola in "The Blue Angel" in 1930, and Charlotte Inwood in "Stage Fright" in 1950. Who was this famous German actress? Extra hint: Remember, this quiz is about death. I chose this actress for a very special reason...

Answer: Marlene Dietrich

Marlene Dietrich was a German actress who died at the age of 90. She acted in movies such as "The Blue Angel", "Stage Fright", "Shanghai Express" and "Desire".

Kristina Söderbaum was also a German actress, Zsa Zsa Gabor was a Hungarian actress, and Helga Meyer was a German opera singer, also the mother of Sandra Bullock.

Did you notice Marlene DIEtrich's name? This quiz is about death, right; so her name has "die" in it.
4. Entertainment: Gwen Stacy, first appearing in 1965, was killed off in 1973. She was "resurrected", however, in 2007, where she was played by Bryce Dallas Howard in a movie. Gwen Stacy was often known as whose first love?

Answer: Spider-Man

Peter Parker, AKA Spiderman, fell in love with Gwendolyn (Gwen) Stacy, though he later married Mary Jane Watson. It is often disputed as to whether Spider-Man's "one true love" was Mary Jane or Gwen. Gwen was first introduced in "The Amazing Spider-Man #31", but the Green Goblin killed her in "The Amazing Spider-Man #121". Gwen was played by Bryce Dallas Howard in the 2007 movie "Spider-Man 3".
5. For Children: For the younger audience, and to give you a break from the perhaps tougher questions, here is a word play question for kids. Which of these words rhymes with "death"?

Answer: Breath

Both "breath" and "death" have a short 'e' sound, while "wreath" has long 'e' sounds. "Math" has a short 'a' sound, and "faith" has a long 'a' sound.
6. General: Sightings of this beast began in the 1930s, and have continued for many years. Most sightings, videos, and photos are hoaxes, but some are unexplained. It had then once been reported, however, that this lake monster was now dead. Many hoaxes about the death of this monster had been seen, including the entire body decaying on the shore. Which of these monsters was thought to have died in 2008, and is now laying at the bottom of the lake?

Answer: Nessie

Nessie, or the Loch Ness Monster, presumably lives (or lived) in Loch Ness in Scotland. In 2008, many thought Nessie had died, and many hoaxes appeared to "prove" this fact. Some pictures showed decaying corpses on the shore, some showed fossils of Nessie, and some just had stories of Nessie's death.

Nessie sightings began in the 1930s, when road construction began near the loch. The rocks falling into the lake supposedly "woke up" Nessie, which is why sightings began during this time. Videos have been seen over the years, including one that was proven to be an escaped circus elephant, and some were really seals in the summer, floating logs, and even boat wakes. One video of Nessie leaping completely out of the water turned out to be a clip from the upcoming movie at the time; "The Water Horse".

Some have made guesses as to what Nessie actually is, including a giant fish, a shark, a whale, a few remaining plesiosaurs, and even a pet dropped off from an alien aircraft.

Champ is a lake monster in Lake Champlain, New York; Chessie is a lake monster found in Chesapeake Bay; and Cressie is a giant eel found in Crescent Lake in Newfoundland, Canada.
7. Geography: Many countries "died" in the sense that the name is no longer used. One of these is Zaire, which was used from 1971-1997. In 1997, however, Zaire was renamed. What new name was used for Zaire?

Answer: Democratic Republic of the Congo

Before its independence, the Democratic Republic of the Congo was called the Belgian Congo. In 1971, it was named Zaire, but in 1997 it was called the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Other unused African country names include Cabinda, Tanganyika and Zanzibar. These became Angola, and Tanzania (merging Tanganyika and Zanzibar), respectively.
8. History: Three of the first 40 presidents died on the birthday of the United States; July 4. Which of these did NOT die on July 4?

Answer: James Madison

Both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1826. James Monroe died on July 4, 1831. James Madison wasn't far off, as he died on June 28, 1836.

Interestingly, these are the only three of the first 40 presidents to die on July 4, and they were all among the first five presidents.
9. Hobbies: In this trading card game, black represents many things, among which is death. One of these "black" abilities is even called "Deathtouch". Which of these trading card games is described here?

Answer: Magic: The Gathering

"Deathtouch" is a static ability. It destroys creatures that do damage from something that has "deathtouch". "Magic: The Gathering", also called simply "Magic" or "MTG", was first introduced in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast.
10. Humanities: "Death of a Salesman" was written by Arthur Miller in 1949. The play follows an old man through a part of his life, during a time where he loses his job, goes insane, and eventually dies. What is the main character's name in the play?

Answer: Willy

Willy Loman is a salesman who lost his job, though he would not tell his wife, Linda, about it. He doesn't make much money because of unemployment, so he borrows a lot from Charley, his good friend. Linda knows of all his lies, however, including that he had an affair when he was younger. Willy quickly goes insane, hearing a woman's voice often in his head, afraid to see Linda darning socks because that woman (the one he had an affair with), likes socks. Eventually, to "solve" all his problems, Willy commits suicide.

Happy and Biff are Willy's two sons, and Bernard is the son of Charley.

"Death of a Salesman" won the Pulitzer Prize as well as a Tony for its original 745 show run.
11. Literature: Death is all too common in literature. You could easily make 100 quizzes about it. For this question, however, I will use the death of, not a human, but a dog. In this book, a dog dies because it was chasing a mountain lion. It jumped over a bush, which cut its stomach. The dog died not long after. In what children's novel did this scene occur?

Answer: Where the Red Fern Grows

NOTE: Stop reading right now if you are an animal lover and cannot read about animal deaths.

"Where the Red Fern Grows" was written by Wilson Rawls in 1961. Old Dan was the dog mentioned in the question. The bush slashed his stomach, leaving his digestive organs exposed. Though Billy's mother tried to clean them and sew them back in, Old Dan died shortly after. Only a few days after the incident, Billy's other dog, Little Ann, died of starvation. She would not eat because she was too depressed about Old Dan's death.

Old Dan and Little Ann were redbone coonhounds, which were used to hunt raccoons.

In the novel, a few more deaths occur, including that of the mountain lion that attacked Billy and his dogs after being treed, as well as that of a boy, who fell on an ax-blade. He thought Old Dan and Little Ann were going to kill him, so he grabbed the ax, intending to kill THEM first, but tripped and landed right on the ax.
12. Movies: There were so many Jedi deaths in the "Star Wars" series, it would be impossible to name them all. However, many of the Jedi that died are named. Two mass killings of Jedi occurred; once in "Attack of the Clones" and again in "Revenge of the Sith". Which of these characters, who all died in "Revenge of the Sith", was male?

Answer: Agen Kolar

Agen Kolar was the only male character listed, while Stass Allie, Shaak Ti, and Joelle Golda were all female characters. All four characters were members on the Jedi Council along with Yoda, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Plo Koon, Mace Windu, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and others. Most of the Jedi Council were killed in "Revenge of the Sith", leaving Obi-Wan Kenobi, who went into hiding on Tattooine, and Yoda, who hid on his home planet of Dagobah.

Female Jedi were exceptionally rare. Two other female Jedi that were not on the council were Aayla Secura and Luminara Unduli.
13. Music: Which of these bands have songs such as "Truckin'", "Sugar Magnolia", and "Friend of the Devil", all of which are on their 1970 album "American Beauty"?

Answer: Grateful Dead

Though all listed choices are names of bands, only Grateful Dead sang the songs mentioned in the question. The band was formed in 1965, and original members were still touring under the name "The Other Ones" in 2003. The band is sometimes also known as simply "The Dead".
14. People: People tend to die, so it was fairly easy to come up with a question for death in the people category. So as to avoid religious figures, scientists, celebrities, and world politicians, it was a bit more tricky. So I went with an aviator; which of these famous pilots was nicknamed Slim, Lucky Lindy, and Lone Eagle?

Answer: Charles Lindbergh

Charles Lindbergh was born in 1902 and died in 1974. He was the pilot of the famed "Spirit of St. Louis". He had crossed the Pacific in the plane in 1927, when he was only 25 years old. The Lindy Hop was named after Lindbergh, a play on his "Lucky Lindy" nickname.
15. Religion: According to Jehovah's Witnesses, what happens to the spirit when someone dies?

Answer: It dies along with the body

Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the soul, or physical body, and the person's spirit are one and the same. Therefore, when the body dies, the spirit dies. According to the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures, when God blew air into Adam's nose to give him life, he became a living spirit, or soul. Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the spirit was not a being put inside of Adam; it was Adam himself.
16. Sci/Tech: What is the term for the study of human death?

Answer: Thanatology

Thanatology is not only the study of death, but also the reasons for death, what causes it, and it even studies the mourning of loved ones who lost someone in death. Thanatology comes from the Greek; "thanatos", which means "death", and "logia", which many know to mean "study". Therefore, thantology is "study of death".

Anthropology is the study of man, oenology is the study of wine, and I made up carkology.
17. Sports: Which of these baseball players was nicknamed "Bonham Bullet" and "Dr. Death"?

Answer: Danny Darwin

Danny Darwin, born in 1955, was a pitcher for the MLB. He has played in many teams; first the Texas Rangers (1978-84), then the Milwaukee Brewers (1985-6), Houston Astros (1986-90), Boston Red Sox (1991-4), Toronto Blue Jays (1995), BACK to the Texas Rangers (1995), Pittsburgh Pirates (1996), BACK to the Houston Astros (1996), to the Chicago White Sox (1997), and finally the San Francisco Giants (1997-8). He retired in 1998.

18. Television: On this show, a little girl, Gracie, suffers from depression and often fears about growing older and dying. Though she is not even an adult, she often talks about how she's "not as young as she used to be", and in some episodes, she fears that Fran is too close to death for comfort. In what show do we find this little girl, Grace Sheffield?

Answer: The Nanny

Gracie is one of three children of Maxwell Sheffield, a widower and Broadway producer. The other two children are Brighton and Maggie. Fran Fine is their nanny, who often lies about her age. Gracie, however, thinks she is very old, practically with a foot in the grave. "The Nanny" starred Fran Drescher, who also produced the show, as Fran Fine, and it aired from 1993-9.
19. Video Games: In this game, you play two different characters. One character is a demi-god, the other is an undead mummy. He began as a normal human, but his jealous brother turned him into a mummy so he could get the throne. Through canopic vases, the main character can "wake up" the mummy so you can then play as the mummy to get through that part of the game. What is the name of the main/title character?

Answer: Sphinx

Sphinx is the main character you play throughout the game "Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy", released in 2003 for the PS2, Gamecube, and XBox. He communicates with King Tut, the mummy, through the canopic vases, which give the mummy temporary life. Sphinx and Tut do not meet until near the very end of the game.

Anubis is the good guy who needs your help to defeat Set, using the blade of Osiris.

Answer: John F. Kennedy
