Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The okapi is an African animal related to the giraffe. On which part of the animal can you see stripes?

Answer: Legs

The stripes are reminiscent of the zebra, but the okapi is one of the two animals in the Giraffidae family. It has a coat of reddish brown with the distinctive white stripes covering the whole of its leg down to the ankles, which are white. It is native to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the central part of Africa, and has been classed as endangered since 2013.
2. Which English football (soccer) club is called the Magpies because of the black and white stripes on their home shirts?

Answer: Newcastle United

Founded in 1892, Newcastle United are well known for their shirts, and the black and white stripes even feature on the club's badge along with two seahorses. Their home ground has been St James's Park since they were founded and remains so at the time of writing, in 2020.
3. In the UK, barbers' poles are identified by red and white stripes. What additional colour do they have in the USA?

Answer: Blue

The red and white stripes are also found in many parts of Europe, but the USA version has traditionally included blue. The red and white are meant to indicate blood and bandages, since barbers also acted as surgeons for many years. There are two main theories about the blue stripe - one saying it indicates the veins, which show blue on the body, and another suggesting it's a patriotic nod to the flag.
4. Which of these actors appeared in the 1981 film 'Stripes'?

Answer: Bill Murray

Directed by Ivan Reitman, the film was part written by Harold Ramis, who also appeared in it. Bill Murray's character decides to join the US Army after a series of disasters leaves him jobless, homeless and single. He persuades his best friend, played by Ramis, to join him. The film also featured John Candy and Sean Young.
5. Flags with stripes are very common. Which of these countries has a flag with only red and white stripes?

Answer: Austria

Austria's flag consists of three horizontal stripes of equal size. The top and bottom stripe are red, with one white stripe in the centre. This design was adopted in 1945, and there is a variant, used as an ensign, with the coat of arms centrally located.

The other three countries feature blue and white stripes.
6. The White Stripes are an American duo with the surname White. What are their first names?

Answer: Meg and Jack

The White Stripes got together in Detroit in 1997 and broke up in 2011. Their first album, called 'The White Stripes', came out in 1999 with their final one being issued in 2007 and called 'Icky Thump'. Jack was originally named Gillis, not White, but took Meg's name when they married. They had divorced by the time fame came along, and passed themselves off as brother and sister before the truth emerged.

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were in Fleetwood Mac, Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes recorded together, and Nickolas and Valerie were better known as Ashford and Simpson.
7. The red and white striped candy cane is particularly associated with which holiday season?

Answer: Christmas

The candy cane is designed to look like a shepherd's crook, and is mainly seen in the shops during December. The shepherds are part of the traditional Christmas story, being one of the earliest groups to learn of the birth of Jesus. They are usually flavoured with peppermint and folklore dates them back to Germany, in the seventeenth century.
8. Which sport shoe manufacturer is known for the stripes on its products?

Answer: Adidas

The company was founded in 1924, in Germany, by Adolf Dassler from whom the brand name is derived. His older brother, Rudolf, was also involved in the company but the partnership ended in 1947 when Rudolf set up his own company of Puma. Unsurprisingly, that company's logo shows a leaping big cat. The three stripe logo was adopted by Adidas in 1952.

Reebok was originally a British company, established in 1958, and Nike is American, featuring the 'swoosh' logo.
9. A zebra named Marty is a central character in which animated film of 2005?

Answer: Madagascar

Zebras appeared in all of the options listed, although 'Zigby' has appeared only in books and on television. Marty is the main character in 'Madagascar' and his escape from Central Park Zoo, along with a group of other animals, forms the story. Marty is voiced by Chris Rock. 'Racing Stripes' (2005) has a zebra imaginatively named Stripes and Khumba is the name of the zebra in the film of that name, made in South Africa in 2013.
10. A zebra crossing in the UK provides a safe way for pedestrian to cross a road. Which of these is also a British pedestrian crossing?

Answer: Toucan

The zebra crossing, named for its black and white stripes, is the original type and has been around since 1951 in the whole of the UK, after a trial period of two years. Since then, newer versions have been introduced, with the toucan providing safe crossing for both pedestrians and cyclists - 'two can cross'.

Other types of crossing are named pelican, puffin and Pegasus - the latter being primarily for horse riders.
