Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We all know the metric system of measurements is based on the number ten. Ten also appears in the old imperial system as there are...

Answer: ten chains in a furlong.

Today more associated with horses racing, the furlong was originally concerned with horses ploughing. It was the length of a common furrow and is now fixed at 220 yards or an eighth of a mile. The chain (sometimes Gunter's chain after a 17th century British surveyor who used such a chain) is a unit of 22 yards. An area of one chain by one furlong is called an acre. There are actually 16 (US) or 20 (UK) fluid ounces in a pint, 20 pennyweights in an ounce and 50 gallons in a hogshead. Strangely, nobody knows for certain exactly how the term hogshead originated, but a hog would need a pretty large head to hold 50 gallons!
2. A set of questions on ten has to mention the Ten Commandments, which appear in the books of Exodus and Deuteronomy in the Bible. Where in the list is "Thou shalt not kill"?

Answer: Sixth

The first is about having no other god but God, the eighth is "Thou shalt not steal" and the tenth covers covetousness. In 1631, Charles I ordered a printer called Robert Barker to produce about 1,000 Bibles. Unfortunately for Mr Barker, his Bibles contained a small error.

He had missed out "not" in the seventh commandment "Thou shalt not commit adultery"! The King was not amused and fined the poor printer 300 pounds which drove him out of business. This edition became known as The Wicked Bible, and despite Charles's attempt to retrieve and destroy them, there are still thought to be eleven of these Bibles in existence.
3. There are ten frames in a game of tenpin bowling. Which of the following was, until 2014, an international governing body of the sport?

Answer: FIQ

The FIQ was the Fédération Internationale des Quilleurs (International Federation of Bowlers). It oversaw the WTBA (World Tenpin Bowling Association) and the WNBA (World Ninepin Bowling Association). In 2014 it was replaced by World Bowling which became the IBF (International Bowling Federation) in 2020.
The FITA is the Fédération Internationale de Tir à l'Arc (International Archery Federation) and FIDE is the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (International Chess Foundation).
FIRE is what not to shout in order to secure a free bowling alley!
4. Which of the following does not usually have ten limbs?

Answer: Woodlouse

A woodlouse, the only common non-marine crustacean, usually has fourteen legs.
Lobsters and shrimps (along with crabs) are crustaceans of the order Decapoda, which all have ten legs.
Cuttlefish (along with their relative the squid) are ten-limbed molluscs of the family Decapodiformes.
5. "One in Ten" was a hit for which pop act with a multiple of ten in the name?

Answer: UB40

This 1981 pop-reggae hit was a blast at the UK unemployment rate at the time.
6. Carl Dubuc once said that "Quebec is one of the ten provinces against which Canada is defending itself". Which is the largest of those ten provinces by area?

Answer: Quebec

Nunavut, the territory of Canada formed in 1999, has a larger area (2 093 190 sq km) than Quebec (1 542 056 sq km), but is a territory not a province.
Ontario (1 076 395 sq km) is the second largest province followed by British Columbia (944 735 sq km). At 5660 sq km, Prince Edward Island is easily the smallest province.
7. "Ten Days That Shook The World" was a famous account by journalist John Reed of which twentieth century event?

Answer: The Russian Revolution

The book was also made into a classic 1927 film by Sergei Eisenstein with a classic scene of a horse falling off a drawbridge. Shooting was difficult as everybody wanted to play Bolsheviks and nobody wanted to play Mensheviks.
8. The man on the US ten dollar bill, Alexander Hamilton was killed by...

Answer: a vice president

Alexander Hamilton was shot and killed in a duel in 1804 by his political enemy Aaron Burr, who was vice president at the time.
The man on the US five dollar note was killed by John Wilkes Booth but, as far as I know, nobody on a bank note has been killed by lightning or a bear.
9. Which of these sportspeople are NOT particularly associated with the number 10?

Answer: Torville and Dean

Jim Laker was a cricketer who in 1956, famously took all ten wickets in one Test Match innings against Australia.
Nadia Comeneci was the Romanian gymnast who in 1976 scored the first perfect ten in Olympic gymnastics, although the scoreboard could only register 1.0 at the time.
Ted Heath captained England to victory in sailing's Admiral's Cup in 1971. At the time, as British Prime Minister, he was living at Number 10 Downing Street.
Torville and Dean were ice dancing champions known more for their perfect sixes than anything to do with the number 10.
10. In which of the following Vincent Price films does he kill people in ways relating to the ten Biblical Plagues of Egypt?

Answer: The Abominable Dr Phibes

This was Vincent Price's 100th film and possibly his most memorable. He plays an organist genius who seeks revenge on the surgeons who accidentally killed his wife by disposing of them in very bizarre ways. The ten plagues are totally out of Biblical order and at no point do I recall Moses summoning up a plague of bats!
Incidentally, Vincent was also in the 1956 epic "The Ten Commandments" as an Egyptian builder.

Thanks for playing, and if you didn't get the perfect ten, you are probably not alone.
