Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which popular song, recorded many times but most notably by the Righteous Brothers, includes the word "hungered"?

Answer: Unchained Melody

"Oh, my love, my darling
I've hungered for your touch
A long lonely time"

Also recorded by Perry Como and Jimmy Young among many others, the song was written in 1955 by Alex North and Hy Zaret.

The Righteous Brothers were Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley, and their version was produced in 1965 by Phil Spector. It's probably the best known of all of the versions and, although nominally attributed to the Righteous Brothers, the recording is actually a solo by Bobby Hatfield.
2. The first of a very popular trilogy of books by Suzanne Collins, and a related film, both bear the word "Hunger" in the title. What is its full name?

Answer: The Hunger Games

The trilogy consists of "The Hunger Games", "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay", and tells the story of how Katniss Everdeen brings down the dystopian government that rules Panem, a post-apocalyptic version of America. The books received excellent critical reviews and have sold in the millions.

The film version of "The Hunger Games" was made in 2012 and starred Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss.
3. In history, what were the 'Hungry Forties'?

Answer: Potato crop failure in Northern Europe

During the mid-1840s, the potato crops of Northern Europe were destroyed by a potato blight. Many countries were affected, but none so greatly as Ireland which had few other staple crops to fall back on, and where consumption, pre-blight, was over 2kg of potatoes per capita per day.

The blight reduced the potatoes in the ground and in store to a black, stinking mass, and resulted in about one million deaths from starvation. The population of Ireland dropped drastically as people died in the famine or emigrated.

There are many books about the Potato Famine and they make shocking reading. The total deaths elsewhere in Europe as a result of the Potato Blight was around 100,000. The era became known as "The Hungry Forties' for obvious reasons.
4. Which country in Europe sounds as if it could do with a good meal?

Answer: Hungary

Hungary was a Christian kingdom from around 1000AD, and its name dates from the Middle Ages when the Pannonian Basin was invaded by the Hungarians. The country is in Central Europe and landlocked; its capital is Budapest. Hungary fell under Communist rule in 1948 but over time things became more liberal, and in 1990 the first free elections were held. Hungary joined NATO in 1999 and the EU in 2004.
5. The song "The Hungry Years" was written and performed in 1975 by which artist?

Answer: Neil Sedaka

Neil Sedaka has been a star for over 50 years, beginning with minor hits in 1958 and his first Top Ten hit in 1959 with "Oh! Carol!" "The Hungry Years" is an eponymous track from the album of the same name. His career has had many ups and downs, especially during the time of "Beatlemania" - in Sedaka's own words, "The Beatles - not good", but he kept going by writing songs for other performers.

In the 1970s he collaborated with Elton John and his career picked up once more. Thanks to careful nurturing of his voice, which did not change substantially in all those years, Sedaka has been able to maintain a grueling concert schedule.
6. A very popular chain of pub restaurants in the United Kingdom is called the Hungry what?

Answer: Horse

Owned by Greene King Brewing and with over 200 outlets nationwide in 2013, the Hungry Horse has made a name for itself for good old-fashioned pub grub. The portions tend to be on the large side, and for smaller eaters one main course easily feeds two.
7. Duran Duran were "Hungry Like The ____". What completes the title?

Answer: Wolf

Written by the band members themselves, "Hungry Like The Wolf" was an album track on "Rio" and was their fifth UK single release. Thanks to heavy exposure on MTV, it was also their breakthrough single in America. It made number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983, and the band went on to international stardom.
8. Hippos feature in a game for children. They are not just hungry, they are what?

Answer: Hungry Hungry

The idea of the game is for the players to make their hippos eat as many marbles as possible by slapping the controller on the back of their animal to lengthen the neck and open the mouth. The winner is the person whose hippo eats the most marbles. It takes about ten minutes to play, is bright and colourful, and requires a degree of dexterity.

It is designed to appeal to fairly young children.
9. Engineer and environmental expert Dick Strawbridge and his son James presented a series on ITV about cooking. What was it called`?

Answer: The Hungry Sailors

Dick Strawbridge, famous for his rather spectacular mustache amongst other things, has been a presenter on programmes such as "Coast", in which the coastline of the British Isles is explored by various experts. In 2011 ITV commissioned a twenty part series which saw him sailing around the British coast with his son James, in which they explored the wonderful local food to be found there.

The food would be carried back to the boat and a veritable feast cooked up. This was "The Hungry Sailors". In 2012, another series was commissioned which saw them sailing around the coast of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Mouthwatering stuff!
10. In the 1970s Britain was beset by "The Troubles', which saw endless bombings of civilian and military targets by the Provisional IRA. Republican prisoners began a series of protests which culminated in the Hunger Strikes of 1980 and 1981. One striking prisoner who starved himself to death managed to get himself elected to Parliament. Who was he?

Answer: Bobby Sands

The prison strikes began because the British Government removed the special status that had previously been enjoyed by convicted paramilitary prisoners. The first Hunger Strike was in 1980 and lasted 53 days. The 1981 strike was a personal confrontation by the prisoners against Margaret Thatcher, and in the event ten of them died. The British Government refused to negotiate with them, and Sands' hunger strike lasted 66 days before he died. Mrs Thatcher told the House of Commons that he was a convicted criminal and that by hunger striking he was exercising his own choice - which was more than the provisional IRA allowed their victims to do.

During this time Sands stood for Parliament and won a seat as the Anti H-Block candidate. (H-Blocks were the special cell blocks for these prisoners.) His funeral was attended by an estimated 100,000 people, and his death radicalised Irish Nationalist politics and brought Sinn Fein into the political mainstream.
