Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which Spanish city can you visit the Alcazaba of the Alhambra, an 11th Century Muslim fortress?

Answer: Granada

The Alcazaba is the fortress portion of the Islamic architectural masterpiece, the Alhambra, which also features a palace, sultan-worthy patios and gardens beautiful enough to give Martha Stewart a nervous breakdown. The Spanish word 'alcabaza' is derived from the same Arabic word that gave us the term 'kasbah'.
2. This legendary track star was born in Coos Bay, Oregon and ran for the University of Oregon from 1969-1973.

Answer: Steve Prefontaine

Steve Prefontaine's personal best mile time is 3:54.6. He broke the four minute barrier nine times during his career.
3. Everybody knows of the Peace Corps, but what is the national version of this program called that puts over 50,000 volunteers to work each year in about 2,100 different programs throughout the United States?

Answer: AmeriCorps

Several AmeriCorps programs include City Year, NCCC, Habitat For Humanity, and Teach For America.
4. Which one of these sites is not one of the Seven Wonders of the World?

Answer: The Rock of Gibraltar

Unfortunately, the Seven Wonders of the World list features all man-made phenomenons, which, if you ask me, is an oxymoron. There is, however, a list of Seven Wonders of the NATURAL World which features the real beauty that can be found on this planet.
5. Which one of these simple inventions has not been given some kind of credit for eventually leading to the idea for the modern day computer?

Answer: sewing machine

Hole punched cards placed in an ordinary loom to make the "automatic loom" was an invention partially inspired by the abacus. It eventually led to the idea for the modern day computer.
6. Canadian Dr. Naismith invented this sport which was inspired by a game from his childhood called, "duck on the rock".

Answer: Basketball

The original game of basketball included goalkeepers, peach baskets, and nine players on each team.
7. What is the main ethnicity of Indonesia?

Answer: Javanese

45% of Indonesia is made up of this ethnic group.
8. What abstract author wrote such works as, "Another Roadside Attraction", "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues", and "Jitterbug Perfume"?

Answer: Tom Robbins

If world traveling chimpanzees, loin cloth wearing magicians, and "returning to one's source" interests you, then I suggest checking out "Another Roadside Attraction." All of Tom's books are great, but it was this one that started it all and is my personal favorite.
9. Debbie Harry is known as a Disco Diva or New Waver. But what alternative genre of music did she serve as female pioneer for?

Answer: Punk

Mmmmm...Blondie.
10. Who said, "Everybody can be great because everybody can serve. You only need a heart full of grace... a soul generated by love" referring to community service?

Answer: Martin Luther King Jr.
