Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What number is both an area code of Manhattan and the temperature in Fahrenheit at which water boils?

Answer: 212

Area code 212 in Manhattan was one of the more important area codes when they were first introduced, just like 213 (Los Angeles), 214 (Dallas), and 215 (Philadelphia). These numbers were chosen because when telephones still used dials, these numbers could be dialed more quickly.

The temperature that water boils in Celsius is 100 degrees. The melting/freezing point is 32 in Fahrenheit and 0 in Celsius.
2. When England still used non-decimal currency, how many pence were in a pound? This number is also used for three Interstates in the United States, and can be found in the states of North Carolina, Tennessee, and Oklahoma.

Answer: 240

There were 12 pence in a shilling, and 20 shillings in a pound. The florin was two shillings, and the crown was five shillings.

Interstate 240 is related to Interstate 40, which goes from California to North Carolina. All three instances of Interstate 240 serve only one metro area each.
3. Which number, famous for the "Not Found" error, is a major highway in Toronto, Ontario, Canada?

Answer: 404

Many websites have creative pages for when a 404 error happens.

Highway 404 goes from the center of Toronto north about 50 kilometers. You cannot go much further north without going significantly east or west because Lake Simcoe is in the way.
4. In which year was Charlemagne crowned emperor? This year is also a number that can be found on the wheel in the game show "Wheel of Fortune".

Answer: 800

Charlemagne was King of the Franks and King of the Lombards before the year 800, but he became Emperor in 800.

The wheel in the game show "Wheel of Fortune" has spaces from $300 to $1000 in increments of $50 (although not all numbers in this range are used), plus a single $2500, $3500, or $5000 space (depending on which part of the show it is). There are also "Bankrupt" spaces and "Lose a Turn" spaces.
5. The sum of the angles of a parallelogram always add up to a certain number of degrees, which is also part of the name of a particular Xbox system. Which number is it?

Answer: 360

Any quadrilateral (which includes parallelograms) will have angles adding up to 360 degrees. A parallelogram always has equal angle measurements for opposite angles.

The Xbox 360 was introduced in 2005. It was followed by the Xbox One in 2013.
6. Which of these numbers is the number of square inches in a square foot? It is sometimes called a "gross".

Answer: 144

There are 12 inches in a foot, so a square foot has 144 square inches, or 12*12. A cubic foot has 1728 cubic inches, or 12*12*12.

A gross is a dozen dozens.
7. This number is a common speed limit in Canada, and it is also the atomic number of darmstadtium, a radioactive element.

Answer: 110

The highest speed limit in Canada is 120, but 110 is much more common. The numbers are in kilometers per hour. 110 kilometers per hour is equal to about 66 miles per hour.

Darmstadtium has a half-life of just a few seconds, just like the elements with similar atomic numbers.
8. Which of these numbers is a U.S. Interstate in southern Florida and the approximate wavelength of yellow-orange light in nanometers?

Answer: 595

Interstate 595 is a short east-west 13-mile Interstate in Florida that goes from I-75 at its western end to Fort Lauderdale at its eastern end.

The wavelength of visible light, in nanometers, is approximately between 400 (violet) and 750 (red). Green is around 550 nm, and red is anything from 650 to 750 nm (greater than 750 nm would be infrared). Yellow is 580 nm, and orange is 610 nm, so yellow-orange would be about 595 nm.
9. What is a perfect score in bowling? It is also the cost to buy either of the cheaper green properties in the U.S. version of "Monopoly".

Answer: 300

A perfect score of 300 in bowling requires getting a strike 12 times in a row.

The cheaper green properties in Monopoly cost $300 each in the US (£300 in the UK), and the more expensive green property costs $320. The dark blue properties cost $350 and $400.
10. Which number is the measure of each angle of a regular pentagon and the number of cards in an UNO deck?

Answer: 108

Each angle in a regular pentagon is 108 degrees, since the sum of the angles is equal to 540 degrees, and the angles must be equal in a regular polygon.

There are 108 cards in an UNO deck: eight each of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Skip, Reverse, and Draw 2 (two of each color), four "0" cards (one of each color), four "Wild", and four "Wild Draw 4".
